Love this: You can tell she has never heard this story before. Service men all have stories they never tell their wives where something deadly almost happened. I love the look on his daughters face, she is now seeing her dad in a whole other light and that will forever change how she views him.

I followed the space program avidly, and I remember Apollo 13 well. During one lull in the action, Jim Lovell was talking to Capcom, reflecting that this would probably be his last mission. Capcom, trying to lighten the mood, joked, "Well, Jim, if you can't take any better care of a spacecraft than that, you don't think they'll let you have another one, do you?" It was the kind of banter that went on constantly among the astronauts. As Wally Schirra put it, "Levity is appropriate in a dangerous profession."

So poignant, and well written.. When Marilyn Lovell kneels down in front of the TV (and that's an awesome tube), you can feel her anguish as she holds on to every word her husband says during the interview... Knowing this may be the last time she hears his voice.. And Lovell himself relating the story of his ordeal over the sea of Japan, with every bit of calm and confidence that you'd expect for a Naval Aviator, and astronaut, who works the problem to a solution can be found.. or, in this case, presents itself..
    Really good scene..

That's why Kathleen got her Best Supporting Actress nomination for this movie. Yeah it was an all-star cast and Tom Hanks did his amazing stuff to lead the film, but the performances of Kathleen and Ed Harris in response to the disastrous mission from home and Mission Control was what really anchored the film so well.

The acting and the message of trust is just one of the great things about this scene. But it represents something very personal to me, and I'm sure others can relate. I met the absolute love of my life as a result of the perfect timing of good and bad events in both our lives. When we watched this movie together for the first time, I hadn't really noticed this scene's power yet. After the interview part, I just paused the movie, and my girlfriend knew why. We had just spent the last week of our then very young relationship marveling at how unlikely it was for two so perfectly matched people to get together, and here we were listening to Tom Hanks wording it so eloquently! She looked me in the eyes and asked me if I loved her. I said, "Welcome home, baby!" That was hands down the best moment in my life. When we get married, we plan to put Jim Lovell's quote on the invitations. Of course we watch Apollo 13 on every anniversary.

Her acting, in this scene, is unparalleled. Not a spoken word. Not a squeak. But she conveys the deepest emotions just by the ever-so-slightest facial movements, even in staring at the tv screen. Her eyes shine as she stares. Her focus intensifies, just looking at her eyes. Gets pulled into his story of hope. And when he's done, she starts to breathe and her face changes, now having lost contact after the moment of being "with him" again. Extraordinary, superlative acting...so missing in the wham, rapid fire, so-called action pictures popular in today's culture. This is real cinematic art. Ron Howard brings her gift to us.

Then right at the end, when he suggests “never knowing what will transpire to get you home” there’s a slight pained and poignant expression- Hanks letting the acting push through the typical astronaut facade (PS shook Jim Lowell’s hand once- still tough handshake at 88 years old then!)

ATTN: Tom Hanks, Ron Howard et al -- The Apollo 13 astronauts never argued with one another. Their mid-course correction LEM engine burn was calm and well coordinated, not the Keystone Cops scene you made it out to be. No one in Mission Control ever said, "Failure is not an option." The use of the LEM air filters in the CM was planned as a contingency in advance, not improvised. You re-wrote history and portrayed a lot of people falsely. The movie "Apollo 13" was a sham.
