    When I first saw the movie in a theater, not one person got up to leave while this song and the credits were rolling...

      So amazing!!! I watched it on VHS and must've rewinded the ending poem and music like 30 times then I recorded it on to my cassette player and listened to that! There is definitely something special in that song!

      You saw this in the theater? Luckyyyyyy.!! One of my all time favorites. (Also Ulali is one of my favorite groups of all time.) I wish I would have gone to Sherman Alexie's book signings after this came out. I'm a goon. Anyway. Thanks for sharing. Hugs, from Mars New Mexico. (Lol. JK)

    there is no music like this. after BC Smith clears the romantic European debris from the intro it opens straight to the heart with these drums and the incredible voices of these women ... As long as this spirit exists, nothing is lost.

    beautiful people, love the life that comes from the song. there is no hatred. I do not want an americanized version of the native people from America. I have a fierce love for Native American people. The music is so powerful. I would be so honored to be able to visit the native people.

    The ending poem or narrative about forgiving our fathers along with this music made this movie powerful. Cowboys just think the always win.

    In 2007 I went to help someone my husband knows to set up at a powwow on the San Carlos reservation. Irene Bedard, her then husband Denny and their baby were there. Irene was there performing with her band (I can't remember the name of the band)
    Anyway, they let me walk around with their baby girl. This was just a few short years before their marriage went south and Irene was openly struggling with her mental health. They were a very sweet young couple.
    I think of them often.

    I'm an African American person and this the best movie I've seen in who knows how long. But what are they sing about? What are the lyrical translated into English

    • @rolandcuthbert784
      @rolandcuthbert784 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Well, if you are African-American, you are culturally descended from a tribal people. If you look back into your cultural memory, you might be able to "feel" what they sing about. You may not know the exact interpretation.
      "This song is in the Tutelo language… I had it translated by one of our speakers from home in NC. It’s an old pigeon dialect of our Old Siouan, Iroquois and coastal Algonquin people’s languages together. All 3 of our big nations have lived together for thousands of years here in what is now the present Virginia and Carolina’s. This is a place that many nations migrated out of and went on traveling north, west and some more south and all over. An old hub!! Also this is a song for healing and giving back to the water and letting the water wash and clean and the spirit rise those are some of the words in the song. Wahjheeleh Yihm… means I carry you with me… So…it means let the water carry you… It’s an ancestral song for the dead and the water as the sacred source…where some of us put in the ashes as a return to be free spirit!! I wrote this song with the help of my cousin Jennifer and Soni. We are Ulali…"

      you are african, simple and plain. if you're going to relate to indians, understand that you and I are not "americans" and should not accept any handouts from our enemies including calling ourselves americans.

    • @rolandcuthbert784
      @rolandcuthbert784 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You don't speak for all American Indians brother. Some indigenous recognize a common bond. If you don't, then do you.

      If you are African American the chances are excellent that you also have native american blood. If you're curious enough after a bit of research you might want to get one of those genetic tests.

    This is the true Spirit of the Blues that melanated Aboriginal Turtle Islanders posses in our music. Africa resonated within it as well. Amazing... gorgeous... transcending.
