I recall Buster really only took two takes at this song. We picked the best one, then overdubbed the lead licks on nylon string (Pearl.) So he laid down the acoustic part, then overdubbed the nylon string solo and also the rhythm for which he used some rolled up coins in his pocket. My thought about the coins was that it might sound cheesy but in the end it worked out great. I thought this tune was great from the first time I heard it, and I knew Chet Atkins fans would love it. Collage-a-Reed he nailed on the first take. He only used two guitars in the "Just Us" sessions, Merle and Pearl. Pearl is the Godin Multiac and Merle is the steel string acoustic made by Simon and Patrick. The whole project was all day Saturday and half of Sunday in April of 2002. Two of Buster's friends joined us as well, Frank Walden and Ron Wise. We recorded "Just Us" at AudioPost in Philly. We had three cameras in the studio, arranged by my friend and long time colleague Tom Emmi in Philly. The faster tunes were recorded on Saturday and the slow beautiful songs on Sunday. Buster came in to the sessions with 16-17 songs! When we played back a song and liked it we just moved on to the next tune. His playing was tip top and he came very prepared. When we walked in to the studio we were almost denied the sessions as the studio had brand new equipment and a no smoking policy so with a little talking we were allowed to circumvent the policy for two days. The engineer recording the session was Scott Waz. Scott was also part owner of the studio, which is why he relented and decided to let Buster record and smoke. I was more worried about beer being knocked over and into equipment. In the booth Buster sat his ashtray and beer on a monitor, part of the NEW equipment.

Sure do miss Buster. What a catchy, happy, easy to listen to tune.... I can't get it out of my head. We lost this talented man way too soon!

I think Brooks Robertson has Pearl. Probably keeps it in a wood & glass display case, as a memoriam to Buster. Those two - Brooks & Buster - loved one another, like brothers. No one would ever confuse Brooks with a low-life. He’s a fine and principled fellow, as good a guy as you’d ever want to meet, and a truly gifted musician and musical educator. Gives Buster B credit at every opportunity for all that he has become. While having invested an enormous amount of his own sweat equity in earning a degree at Berklee and becoming a faculty member there, supporting the rehab of Loren Barrigar, and generally being an all-around good guy.

meh, i've got both as well. depends on what you want to play. if i want a more heavy bass line, i'll use a thumb pick, but with my nail and my flesh part of my thumb, i can half assedly mute as i go, but diferently then with a thumbpick.
