    This symphony contains one of the great Austro-German slow movements. The influence of both Mahler and Franz Schmidt can be clearly discerned.

    You can hear elements that he would use in the soundtracks for Captain Blood (1935) and The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939).

    The Symphony is in F sharp major, not minor.

      Teachers and students! Not borrowed. This is a school of composition, dating back to Richard Strauss. Nobody can do this score nowadays. Only John Williams, God saves him for a long time...

    Heroic theme played by French Horns in 2nd Movement is what the Star Wars theme is based on.

      I doubt that's true and most likely a coincidence, but the resemblance sure is uncanny.
      But leaps of fourths and fifths interwoven with stepwise motion in Brass will easily sound heroic and similar to every other heroic horn theme

      I’m familiar with the score. Yes, I doubt that’s a coincidence, because that’s similar in more ways than just the french horn line (like in this example)

    Thanks for the score. But this is the worst "interpretation" I`ve ever heard. Because there is no interpretation. Each musician just plays his notes... I follow the recommendation of David Hurvitz: Listen to Franz Welser-Möst to see the difference!

    Not one of Korngold's best works. He did a better job with the Op5 Sinfonietta. Franz Schmidt's 2nd Symphony is streets ahead of this later Korngold.

      The performance you mean? Or the composition

    • @FreakieFan
      @FreakieFan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is his masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. The Sinfonietta is safely late-romantic. This piece is highly romantic interwoven with dramatic modernity and chromaticism. Makes it a much more exciting work IMO

      @ejb7969 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@FreakieFan If you're asking about "sluggish", I'm referring to the performance! The Symphony is a masterpiece, but so are so many of Korngold's other works, including his Violin Sonata, the Piano Quartet, the Piano Quintet, the Lieder des Abschieds, the Violin Concerto, snd whatever of his I happen to be listening to at the moment.
      I know and like the Schmidt 2nd very much, but the Korngold Symphony is far superior in many ways.
