      only reason i went enlisted is for a specific job role rather than a becoming a leader for a certain field (kinda like a manager), also the commitment as an officer is a lot longer than enlisted if anything. ROTC does have its benefits though if you really want to become an officer and there's no downsides if that's what someone aspires to be.

    • @oldnatty61
      @oldnatty61 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very good point. Many specialized jobs in the military that align w/ what someone might want to do in civilian life aren't open to officers. Officers are management, and enlisted are craft. There is a down side to or at least something that really must be understood if one is to be a GOOD officer. As an officer YOU ARE in charge and ultimately responsible. Want a good career? Take care of your men and they'll make your career.

    Let me say this. I graduated in 1999 I was able to get a music scholarship and academic scholarship for my first 2 years of school at a community college. My parents never saved up for college and they never applied for state based aid for me despite knowing that I wanted to go to college. (Yes, I'm still pissed about that) The military was an option but I didn't think it was right that I had to sign up for 4+ years of slavery just to have the dignity of an education. I had no other option than to take out student loans, which is also a form of slavery. Slavery is still in operation in this country.

      If you're going for a criminal justice degree and going for 31B because you want to become a LEO in the future, then I'd advise against it. I don't have any experience myself, but from what I've read from officers, it's better to have a different degree as a backup if law enforcement doesn't work out. It's also better if you don't become an MP because even though it does give some LE experience, military and civilian law are entirely different and its easier to train someone that doesn't know anything about LE than to break down someone's military LE experience then train them in civilian LE. If you're not doing this then... just ignore this comment.

    Infantry in the field for 24 hours up to 2 weeks? I'm just fucking w/ you dog. I'm an old infantry guy. But there's a super big point you imbody, but are missing. The person's choice of MOS. You're a great example. Dental Specialists. Dental Hygienist. Dentist. There are a lot of jobs in the military that already set a person up for a civilian career. And then one could piggy back off that w/ their education.

    • @golfery5119
      @golfery5119 ปีที่แล้ว

      you're not wrong. it makes way more sense to do what you said as opposed to doing what some people say which is doing a MOS like infantry that has no civilian translation then trying to do your gi bill when you get out later.
      And for another one of a gazillion reasons, this is also probably why the air force is a better idea because of the fact that air force doesn't do the field like the army/marines do. Even if you went TDY in the air force, you'd still most likely have some internet access.
      Yeah you can use tuition assistance and do online college courses in the military including the army/marines while you are on active duty, but keep in mind you're in the army/marines where at various points of the year (even if you are in a medical mos like dental specialist in a field unit) you can be sent to the field where you are stuck for 2 or 3 or 4 or more weeks at a time without internet access. The Air Force wouldn't have that the same way that the army/marines do. Someone in AF can go for a few weeks on TDY and then when they are done for the day they have internet access to catch up on the online college course they're doing.

      I'm not fully in the Army yet but was qualified to become a dental assistant if I wanted. I'm 17 and have no college credits so no, you don't need any experience. What you most likely read is probably for *Officers* that want to do dental work. Enlisted soldiers don't have to complete any courses beforehand to train to become whatever they want to become. For example I'm becoming a 68W (Combat Medic) but I don't need to get my NREMT before joining or do any courses before joining. They will teach you what you need to know.

    • @golfery5119
      @golfery5119 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xirxn9592 Oh my goodness you do you bro or sis. It would make way more sense to be a 68E instead of a 68W because of the fact that 1) on the outside, a dental specialist would translate to a dental assistant whereas a combat medic would translate to what, an ambulance driver maybe? I don't even think combat medic actually translates to an emergency medical technician but I could be wrong.
      Then of course there's the job on active duty. As long as a dental specialist is actually assigned to a clinic, he or she would actually be doing his or her job. Things will suck if the dental specialist is assigned to a field hospital (because this isn't the air force but the army) and all he or she is doing is for the most part motorpool nonsense and cleaning up at the company followed with once in a while going to the field doing whatever (because this isn't the air force but the army).
      For combat medics, obviously that's something you'd never actually do since you aren't at war in combat. At most you'd maybe treat an infantryman who sprained his ankle in the field.
      For the average day if you're lucky you'd be sent to a unit that lets you work in a clinic where you'd be signing people in and maybe checking their vitals.
      If youre not lucky, then you'd really be stuck in a motorpool and cleaning up all day even moreso than a 68E sent to a field hospital.
      It just makes less sense to go with 68W over 68E but you do you.

    4k a year??? Tf. Most good schools will want near 10k a semester. No cap other jobs outside the military will pay more towards college or pay you more in general so you can afford that college tuition

      Tuition Assistance is one of 4 ways the Army can help you pay for college. You also have your MGIB-AD and MGIB-SR (Montergomery G.I. Bill/Active Duty and Selected Reserve). Then you have your Post 9/11 G.I. Bill. Each of these have different requirements and benefits.
      The basic rundown is that everybody gets TA as long as you have enough time in your contract to complete your course(s). Benefits are up to $4,500 a year paid directly to you. This is available for as long as you take classes.
      For the MGIB-SR, you must sign a 6 year contract to receive benefits. Benefits go from $1,300-$5,250 a year paid directly to you based on how many courses you're taking. This is available for up to 36 months.
      For the MGIB-AD, you must pay $100 a month during your first year of service and serve 2 years active duty before receiving benefits. Benefits go from $6,600-$26,500 a year paid directly to you based on how many courses you're taking. This is available for up to 36 months.
      For the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, you must serve at least 90 days active duty to recieve 50% benefits all the way up to 1,095 days (36 months) to recieve 100% benefits (There's also 60%, 70%, 80%,and 90% in between). Benefits go from $13,550-$27,100 paid directly to the school based on your percentage. Benefits also include up to $1,000 for books and supplies and a housing allowance for in person classes (Based on Basic Allowance for Housing in the area you're attending) as well as $1,050 for people who are attending college online.
      So you're final benefits are:
      TA + MGIB-SR: $5,800-$9,750/Year
      TA + MGIB-AD: $11,000-$31,000/Year
      TA + Post 9/11 G.I. Bill: $18,500-$31,600/Year (Not including housing and stipends)
      So all in all, the benefits are confusing but they do provide a good deal of money for education. I do recommend you look up more information about it if you're curious since this is just a basic breakdown of the benefits. Maybe this will even persuade you towards joining, who knows? Even if it doesn't, good luck with your future.

      yes, but if you think about the military tuition assistance for 4 thousand dollars a year is like that because the military doesn't really expect you to be taking a lot of college (if you do take college) while serving on active duty because the military is such a hectic schedule.
      It might not be so difficult for a lot of people in the Air Force who are not mechanics and have decent schedules compared to a lot of other military servicemembers, but it is especially more difficult for a lot of people in the Army and Marines who have to go sit in the woods for several weeks on end without internet access. I don't know how Navy would do it on a ship but I doubt they're much better.
      The military is only counting on you to take one or maybe two courses here and there while you're serving on active duty and probably they let you have that little bit of tuition assistance, 4 thousand dollars, as something that might convince people who don't know any better to try to stay in and not get out the military.

    Can I serve 4 years active duty, while doing so earn my associates degree. They after the 4 years go to a 4 year university and play football? Then go back to the army to continue my career? I know that's a lot but my dream has always been to plau college ball. But I'd also love to continue serving and possibly someday work in intelligence!! I love sports but also the opportunities the Military provides for someone like me. Please help out..I just cannot afford collge right now and am in a pickle when it comes to living a normal life and I know the military can and will help me earn my goals for my future! Please let me know!

      I would think that you would have to have some kind of scholarship to play football in college in the first place??? I doubt they would let you serve, then get out, and play football at a college?
