On the travel point, I will 100% die on the hill that it is not the unwillingness or not wanting to travel, it's the affordability. Americans, most of us, simply cannot afford it. I just got my passport this year and I shit you not, this little booklet cost me $200. The trip I'm planning and will be slowly playing for in installments costs me a total of about 5k which will be paid off over a couple years. Capitalism is the driver for much of this shit.

I'm sure someone else has said this, but as an American, I believe the #1 reason Americans don't travel is because they literally can't. We talk about the economic disparity in the US but when it comes to the travel criticism, a lot of people forget that passports, plane tickets, room and board, food, etc. costs money that a shit ton of Americans don't have. There a lot of people out there who want to travel internationally and probably never will.
Having an education might even make it *less likely* for Americans to travel, given how expensive it is.

  • @friedmattato2158

The thing I find annoying about the "Americans don't travel" argument is that the economic angle tends to get overlooked. It's not cheap to travel, especially for Americans. @@lilithowl it definitely depends on where, and I'd want to dig into some statistics before fully agreeing, but it is true that geography makes international travel more difficult than it is for, as an example, most of Europe. People in the north can drive or take an affordable ferry to Canada, people in the southwest can drive to Mexico, but otherwise, just getting to a different country requires a long and expensive international flight or cruise (or multiple days of driving to a border, but only if you want to go to one of two countries).
And I'll be honest, I've been to Canada, I loved it, but an American going to Canada is really not expanding their cultural horizons very much.

Baldy executed movies can still have the artistic vision the director, cast, and crew had for it or just be fun to watch how it fails. The key is that someone cared about it, but they lacked the skill, knowledge, time, money, or some combination to make a well made movie.
The Borderlands movie disappointed me by being exceedingly bad. I didn't feel like anyone cared about it other than to make money.

  • @肉骨粉

One request/perspective from a random internet stranger (who doesn't currently patronize you). Please don't regard any support or patronage that I may or may not provide as endorsement of you yourself as a person, and don't regard withdrawal of such support as anything more meaningful than me happening to feel shitty that day. I might support creators on a whim for reasons as silly as cool facial fair, and might withdraw it for similarly trivial reasons. While you may pour your heart and soul into your videos, and I may, vary rarely, resonate deeply with them, it's far more likely that I've just superficially latched on to a talking point. I don't matter, and anything hurtful I might say doesn't matter. Any financial support that I may provide might matter more, but anger isn't really likely to be the factor that decides whether I do that.
That said, I do recognize that any hate I target at a creator may be minor to me but contribute to a wall of hate from hundreds of commenters, and try to keep that in mind. I also think that leaving a final hostile remark when withdrawing patronage is a pretty shitty move.

I’m very sorry about you and your wife’s experience.
I somewhat disagree with the cancel culture not being a thing. While a lot of the complaints about it are stupid (especially when it’s from people who have been exposed as predators), a lot of people have a tendency to jump on the opportunity to hate on someone, often grasping at straws to make their case. A recent example for me has been Chappell Roan who has gotten so much vitriol for basically anything she does. Notice how it’s often marginalized people who are the most vulnerable to this sort of thing.

Honestly the no travel thing for me and my family was: "It's something only rich people can do." so we never did it. That might not be true, but that's the perception about travel. Travel is time consuming and expensive. I feel like there's a huge class blindness when it comes when people talk about how few people have passports in the US. Leaving the US wasn't a financial possibility for me until I was in my 30s, and now I'm bogged down with a career and limited time off. Am I going to spend my 1 week of vacation learning about a completely new culture and the struggles that brings, or am I going to just stick to something safe like a trip to a regional tourist trap somewhere in the States and hope my burnout has at least somewhat ameliorated by the time I'm back to work?
Traveling isn't a day trip kind of activity in the States like it is out in Europe. Not to mention, I really have to wonder how many "people with passports" visit countries that are all that different than theirs. Oh damn you went from the UK to France or Germany, very impressive!

Sorry to hear about what happened to you and your wife! It's awful how simple disagreements can cause people to go nuclear online to make sure that other people's lives are as bad as they can make it.
On that note, I think that we gravitate towards outrage because it gives us purpose in life. Every day, we hear how the wealth gaps are getting bigger, everything is getting more expensive and it's getting harder and harder for the average person to get by. The reasons why that is happening and the things we can do about it are extremely nuanced and there are very few avenues to do anything about it since those that are causing the issues have so much power and influence that they can easily ignore us, regardless of how loud our cries are (then there's social media platforms censoring some forms of speech).
When we get angry about a store not selling the thing we want or someone insisting on introducing themselves with their pronouns, that's us being able to exercise the little power we have in hopes that it'll help make our lives a little better. Trying to cancel people and force them into hiding is a form of change that we can do without having to put much effort into it. And knowing that our negative actions are causing that sort of harm gives us the feeling of power that we've been seeking all our lives.
Unfortunately, all this does is serve as mere distractions to the real reasons we are in the state that we are in now. Taking care of that requires coordinated effort and time that a lot of us don't have. Screaming at people behind a keyboard makes us feel important, so we do that instead.

What interests me the most about just HOW MUCH ppl are addicted to hate is how it pushes aside and obfuscates either some important aspect of the truth of the situation, or A LOT of it. There is no nuance anymore, only "right" or "wrong", which may not even be the case cuz certain facts are missing; nobody can look at them cuz they're too busy being angry. And when it's brought up people simply don't want to look. This is, of course, very broadly/generally speaking. There will always be the exception

28:59 that's so sad. I'm sorry that happened to you. You are the most tame and understanding content creator, I can't understand why someone would be cruel in their withdrawal for support over saying something factual.
Now that's insanity. Over stating a fact, not an opinion. If they took a college course on physchology, they may learn about parasocial relationships.
People are allowed to withdraw their monetary support for any reason, and they don't need to give it necessarily. But I have noticed society's... decline. The ability to be cordial is a dying art. I attribute this loss to social media. It has ruined the human psyche.

Are you telling me if there was video of you losing those friends because of your anger wouldn't have gotten you canceled or at the very least, lose countless subscribers?
And I also want to point out that I did like this video, but I wouldn't have commented on it without saying the negative I posted above. I'm cognizant of that and if you're reading this you might have a slightly elevated focus of this comment lol. At ease, you're doing good stuff.

I heard the Kindle deleted 1984, allegedly (probably happened anyway lol). So, here's a little thing I concocted as a post-modern parody of the supposed manuscript, but modernized:
    *2024: The 21st Century's 1984*
_TH-cam def: Socioeconomic echo chamber that peddles along various cultural controversies for the growth of ad revenue and prospective shareholders. As a result, it creates a predominately procrastinating atmosphere of counterproductive measures for ensuring our wellbeing, in the form of either infighting or face-value-high-reward content (a.k.a. slop), presented as a form of “edutainment” (low-brow or high-brow). From drama, to politics, to small niche introspections, no one is solving anything, only either generating more personal or existential controversy, “textualizing” (as opposed to contextualizing) viewpoints, or having those who partake in the consumption peddle along the same ideas and “perspectives” promoted by the algorithm. It mostly lacks sincerity, purely reeks of mediocrity, and creates a facade of movement and direction by having multiple TH-camrs talk about the same thing, unionizing over that thing, where neither are they vulnerable from partaking in the consumption of monetizable slop, perpetuating the cycle of further slop. They are the culprits, as they too are the victims, all in part due to the system._
This is not to say that all content on TH-cam is bad, but rather the only good content on the platform is productive videos. Productive videos break the mold of “edutainment”, and though they can take the form of it, they seem to provide skill sets and reveal ways of going about solving certain issues. For instance, watching someone deconstruct a musical piece with a keyboard, drawing repetitively with a voice over (as lackluster as it sounds) to have the viewer understand the form or substance of what they are creating.
*The issue is this:* TH-cam focuses on monetizing the human experience, at the expense of the individual; it’s more of an echo chamber for individuals, not a marketplace for individual pursuits as it previously was in the early 2000’s. In other words, the best way to use TH-cam in 2024 and onward is to seek critical constructive Learning, as it promotes individual values such as the improvement of analysis and supplemental education. So basically, be autistic, integrate, and proliferate.
[Simply put, the so-called “perspectives” aren’t of much perspicacity as one might think. Remember, it’s a for-profit, socioeconomic echo chamber, something that validates your viewpoints to fuel the dopamine train further into the echo chamber. What should be done, arguably and for the sake of our sense of equilibrium in this vapid realm of para social transactions, is productively discussing, in-depth, the perspectives of all sides, which rarely anyone does anyway; in other words, discussing beyond what the person did and having enough integrity and cognitive hindsight to discuss why anyone does anything. Thus, it is with a burden of speculative proof that I say that the content on your “For You Page” is not prone to this lack of “perspective”. Your “For You Page” lacks the very epistemic definition of perspective. *_Simply put, you are the perspective, you make the perspective. Get your head out of the echo chamber. At the very least, remove your long-term dependency on the algorithmic enthrall of these shareholder’s superficial recommendations_* ]
Another issue deals with time complexity [not in a technical sense]. This is to address the “For You Page,” or in other words the TH-cam recommendations. When it comes to certain videos, there seems to be an underlying value that could be gained from clicking on the interesting video thumbnail. But wait, TH-cam is an echo chamber composed of fiduciaries and shareholders as its top belligerents. I say belligerents because it’s not the TH-camr who’s showing you the video, it’s the prospective shareholder; the man in the middle who seizes your attention algorithmically peddles you this video, when if you really wanted to actually have someone help you, you’d go out of your way to find the type of video yourself, just like anyone would with anything back then. It’s an allure of readiness. They make you think that this type of video, based on all of the other types of videos you view, is “special” in that it was readily handcrafted just for this occasion (or whatever thought you have in mind), when it’s simply a slippery slope to set you up on a trip to content addiction. They may show you big TH-camrs with a promising base of opinions and thoughtful “perspectives,” or, with all due respect, sympathy-riddled, humble TH-camrs trying to make it in the big world of social media. But remember, they’re never the answer, they’re part of the solution. From all of my experiences tackling this issue head on in my life, the one thing that I learned from content consumption is that you will always be the answer, and only if you could just sit in your room with your thoughts, would you develop the same, cool, niche inclinations and ideas that your favorite creators and communities have. Remember, the algorithm doesn’t mold your interests, it feeds off of what you like. So, why aren’t you doing what you like, or at least abstracting about what you like, you know for fun? And if you are doing what you like, my apologies, but I guess this isn’t for you.
*_~ "Every day’s a New Year, and I Want to Grow Up. Every New Year’s Eve is 24 hours, as so is every day. Therefore, every day is a new year. Simply create your own fiction to own your own reality. Use the constructs of the system, parse out the scattered virtues, and claim them as your own. If ownership in the material leads to the numbness of the soul, then ownership in the immaterial will rectify it." ~_*

@@davidcrawford9026 I'm sorry you don't grasp basic human decency and likely have narcissistic tendencies but that's a you issue. YOU are the one engaging in toxic and dysfunctional behaviour here. And I say this as someone trained as a board-certified therapist.
It's normal and healthy for people to be hurt by a situation like this. If you're not hurt by it happening to you, then something is very wrong. If you don't understand that another person would be hurt by it, then you lack basic empathy. It's also normal and healthy for people to talk about it.
Do you behave this way towards people offline too? Do you think your behaviour is healthy, that it would be tolerated by most people, or that it helps create a functional community? Do you think it helps anyone at all? Or does it only stroke your ego and make you feel good?
One thing I've been shocked by online is the lack of basic human decency and empathy and the extreme self-centredness I see coming from some people, yourself included. Often combined with totally misplaced self-righteousness. Mostly coming from Americans. It reminds me of nothing so much as the behaviour I see from fundie Christians. Perhaps that's why most of it comes from Americans - the fundie/evangelical Christian influence. And it's like you don't grasp at all how profoundly dysfunctional, destructive, immature, and antisocial it is.
