You and Rex couldn’t be more different.....or more similar 😄. Much different approach but the same friendly “approachable” attitude and willingness to teach and help. I’ve been a casual woodworker for 40 years and have learned more from the two of you in the last month about hand tools (planes especially) than I ever knew before.
I’m glad to see a traditional plane making tutorial. Every other one I see on TH-cam cuts the plane in half and glues it back together after the cuts are made.

Have watch both of your co-fab plane builds. Have to say quite honestly love them both. Yours is like an all wooden sloop racing yacht, and his looks it is inspired by a 1930"s sleek racing Deucenberg.
I also saw his video where he loughed on hand sharpening a plane blade in shape and use instead a grinding machine.In that case Rex was absolutely wrong.I would never ever let a novice woodworker near the grinder ,first things first the novice have to learn how to restore the sharpness or shape of a blade by hand .He also said that is not easy to mess up or toast a blade with the grinder .Well i have news it is ,and i did it more than once which always gave me more to work after by hand than if i would just do it by hand all the way .
I've got the FEE-VA. Initially thought I'd be good with 1-2...up to 6 now, lol. But NOT LOL because I didn't get the wooden shoe memo, and dropped a chisel. Crocs don't cut it, but are easily cut. Luckily no nerve or tendon damage, but lesson learned. It was a short 3/4" Craftsman socket/bench chisel. Not heavy, and fell from bench height. So if anyone reads this, those clogs aren't just a fashion statement! ps, thanks for the sharpening tips.
Really nice Plane and more so for making it yourself. It's been about a year since I made my last plane.. a coffin smoother. Maybe I should think about another tool project.
Now that you've had it a few years... how would you say it compares to your low angle bevel up? Particularly curious about end grain and softer woods--I feel like a lot of people don't talk about how great low angles are on stuff like pine and spruce
Do you ever make anything with the curls? My dad used to play with them and make some cute art things for my sister and I. Was one of our favorite things. If you or your kids ever make anything with them, that would be a great video!
That is a gorgeous tool and with a hock iron I'm sure it's fabulous to use. I was getting worried for a bit but there was some white oak at the end so I guess all is well. Congratulations, that is very well done indeed!
Another wonderful, hand built tool. Nothing like them. Questions: 1) When you mark the width of the plane body do you saw on the outside (waste) side of the line and then plane down to the exact dimension? 2) Is your longer video going to include the technique of chiseling to an exact shape (the button hole is perfect). I struggle with that aspect of woodworking. Thanks James!
Thanks Bruce. I cut about 1/16" away from the line and then plane back to it. yup there will be 2 videos on cutting the ecapement. It is easer then it looks as long as you stay away from the line as long as possible.

This project will have to wait a couple of weeks. I’ve got some window frames to make. I need to stop watching your videos. I can’t keep up. I would really like a Norris style adjuster with the blade and cap iron. I’ll have to investigate that. I got some bees wax with jojoba oil today. I shall try that as a finish for it.

Thanks I will be covering those in the longer videos. But most of the time the harder the better and the less porous the better so beach, hickory, Ash, oak. But most of the time hard maple or beach ate the most common.

The lower the angle the easier it is to push and the better it does with end grain. but the higher the angle the better it does with figured or reversing grain.
As always a nice video. I look forward to the in-depth videos. I am not sure if I missed it or you left it out of this video but what size of plane iron did you use? I have recently discovered ipe and I love it, i would like to see you use it in a larger project.
hey there James... just consider me an ignorant for the question I'm going to make. but even if the bevel is down like in your plane don't you have to consider the upper line of the blade to determine the planing angle? anyway congr for the nice job!!
thanks. with he bevel down the angle is the work to the top of the iron (parallel tot he bed of the iron so just the angle of the bed). with the bevel up the angle is from the work to the bevel (angle of the bed plus the angle of the bevel). Does that answer your question?

Can you make a video on how to use antique wooden molding planes, Just picked up some nice ones from a flea market, ones from the 1870s in near mint condition. Just Im not real sure how to use them
How do you like working with the ipe? I'm making winding sticks out of some ipe I got from a scrap bin, and I'm having a hard time keeping it from tearing out.
I'm trying to remember off the top of my head: with bevel down, you subtract the bevel angle from the bed angle to get "clearance" angle, which can be problematic if under 12 degrees, so says my woodworking book (I'll try to find it again). Imagine if both the bed and bevel were 25: every part of the bevel would be flat against the surface. Anyway, I guess the 12 degree warning is wrong since youre doing fine with 5.
Jason J. Ayala P. As a general rule of thumb that is ok, but way off on some things. If you always start at the end of the board you do not need a clearance angle and a lower clearance angle just means slower engagement in the middle of a board. This plane has a 5 degree clearance angle. This means it will take 1/2"-1" to startid board. For most work that is not a problem at all. And for jointing it works perfictly.
12:15 It's settled then - my bevel up metal block plane is fucked up! I can't even get it to shoot beech properly. It's weird that I've decided to switch to wooden planes a while ago and yet I've put so much effort into tuning up that metal critter after that decision. My brain seems to be shutting down completely sometimes...
Is that GIMP I see on the monitor? If you go to Windows -> Single Window Mode in GIMP you can do away with that ridiculous 3-window thing. I've been using that program for like 20 years an I still don't know why they do that.
uzimonkey yes it is. I love the multipul window setup. I have 4 moniters on my computer, an it is nice to move them around. I do the same for video editing.
It protects the body. You strike there to rettract the iron. it is usually made of a harder wood that does not dent as easily. And if you wear it out it is easier to replace the button.

I use it when I have long end grain work. But most of the time I grab the LAJP as it is easier to hold.

I have made a few things in the past. also, put them in a vase and use them for decoration.

I was thinking of doing a noris ajuster, but with the low angle it was going to be a bit more dificult. Maybe on the next one.

Do you use boiled linseed oil and paste wax in nearly every project? It feels like it. But how many youtubers finish everything in water based poly?
on all of my hand tools. just can not beat the feel!

it is not an easy wood for hand tools. a ton of silicon content and requires a ton of sharpening but so beautiful!
@ about 11:54, you tap the square button with a mallet before you tap the wedge on the plane iron. What does tapping that button do?
That is where you tap the plane to retract the iron.

I like your plane betterbecause it is wood. I too use rock maple and Ipe for planes. I prefer Japanese style pull planes though.

To ajust the iron out you tap the body there. The button protects from dents.
