Abandoned boats are drifting in Staten Island's Great Kills Harbor and no one seems to know what to do with them.
Local residents are outraged. They say at least four boats have been recovered from the waters and told Diana Blass of Chasing News that dozens of abandoned moorings remain. The boats are hidden in high tide and have been described as a ticking time bomb.
NYC's Parks Department said it is not responsible for abandoned boats and moorings in state-owned waters.

Why arent the registered owners being held responsible for the removal of their property?

That boat the Minnow at 0:49 was owned by the skipper and Gilligan, it was on a three hour tour.

All these boats had VIN or some kind of ID tags...so why arent' they going after the OWNERS???

    • @53Peterbilt
      @53Peterbilt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      here's the problem...
They contact the last registered owner, who replies that he sold the boat over a year ago, and that whoever bought the boat from him must not have reregistered the boat into his name...so therefore, he's not responsible for what the 'new' owner did with the boat. (a likely BS story) >:(
This is the same problem with derelict motorhomes being abandoned alongside the road. Whoever bought this motorhome from me last year never registered it into his name, so it's not my problem.
Out here in Oregon, we now have a spot on the back of the registration that when you sell your vehicle (or vessel), the buyer has to fill out their info on it. You then take this to the DMV and it clears your name from ownership. If the purchaser never put it into this name, then it's not your problem, plus it leaves a paper trail to where the thing went..
I think this is a great idea, and should be implemented nationwide!.

Where I’m at the police department has been dealing with this type of situation. From my property I can see 6 abandon sunken vessels on the inter coastal. Last month the police pulled 6 vessels out.

I said the same thing they were some of the better made boats of their time from V6 Chevy's to Big Block Chevy engines. I spend a lot of time restoring 70's Chevy Trucks because people find them so desirable.

Go after the last registered owner. HIN/Registration numbers were clearly marked on the boat.
Never, ever sell a boat and NOT have the title transferred to the new owner.

NY boats do not have titles....at least my SeaRay 24 footer doesn't.....when purchased new from Dealer a buyer will get a Point of Origin Statement so it can be registered. After that it is a transferable registration process. What they should be doing instead of mooring them is towing them out to deep water an sinking them to make artificial reefs ..this will clear up hazards an allow for money generating moorings. I am in upState NY.....the people in an around Staten Island.....are DUMB and lazy....!!!!

  • @dansullivan6183

At low tide get the registration #, find out who the owner is, and place a lien on his property until the boat is removed. An accident is just waiting to happen then, the lawsuits will begin. For the ones beached the state should hire a salvage company to cut up the boat and haul it away. Not brain science just common sense.

It's not hard to figure out who boats belong to. Hardly anybody obliterates serial numbers or registration info on boat hulls and there are other ways to track them down anyway.
Local governments and law enforcement are just lazy like usual.

Why shod the original owner be liable? Those boats could have exchanged hands several times. In the end the state will increase the price of registration to compensate. The revenue created will be sucked into a burocratic vacuum the problem won't be solved but you'll pay 2× as much for following the law in the first place. BTW they won't have the resources to fine those without registration and no means. Again full circle but you will pay.
