    We have one of these... haven’t used it yet... my question is has anybody use this for actual camping and how does it hold up in the elements?

      The tent is great. Although I use it mostly as a garage, I've used it for camping. It's held up well for three years but it is not good in heavy rain. You're not going to get waterproof at this price range. I've answered this same question multiple times here in the comments.

    I bought one of these a few years ago and we love it - but we’ve only actually taken it camping once. I originally purchased it to protect my then pregnant wife from the Zika virus while I played with our toddler in the yard. We’re now a family of 5 and it’s been used as a play area at soccer games, a pseudo-cabana at the beach, story-time hut, nursing/changing station, etc. It comes in handy so often that I’ve considered sewing backpack straps on the carrying bag!

      'zika' was caused by a poison - a sprayed pesticide, not a mosquito or a virus.

    I have this tan and really appreciate you going through wrapping up and closing to 10 I always forget how to do that planning on using it today at the beach hopefully works out.
    The one thing I remember from camping with it a couple of years ago was I had a double thick mattress which did not work out 100% great just because of how low the tent is not a major issue but I was closer to the top then I would be in a taller tan but very convenient tent for the cost

    I have the 2 person version, and it's okay. It hasn't leaked, but the position of the vents is a little high if you decide to go camping in it when it's hot. Condensation will form. Luke from TOGR found the same flaw in the Coleman Sundome tent.

    Very good demo of this Coleman tent and especially the space inside (with you in it). I guess with four people it would be a bit like sardines in a can, but surely very comfortable for two.
    Here in the UK, these pop-ups have a bad name and are thought of as 'festival tents' only. But I don't know why manufacturers don't get their act together and make better quality ones for more serious camping/backpacking. OK, they may not survive extremes, but the idea of a tent that pops up in 10 seconds when it's pouring with rain seems so appealing. That's my thoughts anyhow.

  • @Nathanallenpinard

      Rachel in Real Life you're welcome. Amen to that! In my last outing i made a pit stop lake side in blue ridge to kayak before ziplining... After i unloaded, the sky fell out and my tent being WIDE open without rain fly i was screwed. After 3 hrs under emergency tarp knowing rain wouldn't let up n i would be locked in the park and no luck at ziplining next day i went home. Definitely liking this tent in that scenario haha

    To attacg a light I would use a saftet pin through the netting if it is strong enough than if you need a bigger loop to hand it you can use string or paracord

    This is how I measure a tent. If it says one person, it's one person, but tight, if it says two persons, it's a one person, if it says three persons, it's two persons, etc, etc. Don't forget about your gear (or cat) if there is no vestibule. And don't forget your camo netting, making harder for a Sasquatch to spot your tent! Stealth camping. And the hook, try a sctew in hook in a small piece of wood and a couple strips of gorilla tape. As long as you're not hanging anything heavy.

    We are just using this one now for the firstl time.. Is crap because of these vent nets at the top and on the sides... there is no wind outside but you can feel the cold air coming inside the tent just like you sleep outside. Might be good when us very hot outside but we are in the Romanian Mountains and is cold in this tent... forget about the views...nice description tho so thumbs up for tour video but not for Coleman..!

    Maybe get sew-on velcro patches, but attach them with fabric adhesive rated for that nylon fabric. Then put matching velcro hook patches on your lights, and stick 'em up when the tent's set up.
    I've got this tent but haven't tried it yet. Now that I know this issue, I just ordered some electro-luminescent wire in white. The pack I ordered comes with a battery pack/control for one end. It uses a couple of AA batteries and lasts for a long time. I have some good quality rechargeables, so I may use those. Either velcro it or even fasten it directly along a seam around the roof mesh with fabric glue. You could even leave the controller in it, though I'd recommend pulling the batteries if you plan to store it for any length of time. I don't think it'd interfere with the folding and unfolding -- it's really flexible stuff, and gives off a LOT of light, especially in the dark.
    Here's the one I ordered: www.amazon.com/Lysignal-Electroluminescent-Halloween-Christmas-Decoration/dp/B0731217LR
    There's lots of others out there for next to nothing. Or you could do something with LED strip lights, but the flexibility isn't as good, so I'd use Velcro for that and just attach it when I set up the tent. Maybe something like this: www.amazon.com/HitLights-3528-16-4-Lumens-Adapter-Included/dp/B005GL5UG2/. I already have a 12v power pack with the right connector, and it has a toggle switch built in. The LED strips are waterproof and available in a lot of colors as well as white. Put velcro tabs on the tent roof and the LED strip, and you'd have LOTS of light -- the LED strips are 72 lumens per foot, and there's a bit over 16 feet in a single roll.
    The EL wire is about the same price, but runs off lower voltage, and is water-resistant, but the lifespan of EL wire is between 1-3 years, depending on the environment its kept in. Outdoors in sun and weather, it cuts the lifespan roughly in half. The LED strips are water-proof, and would probably last longer, as LEDs have a MTBF of around 50,000 hours. Maybe I'll get an LED strip light spool and try it too.
    I have a 9-foot red EL wire like the white one, with its own battery pack. I might set them both up, because red light doesn't destroy your night vision. Especially since I plan to use the tent as a working position for ham radio in the field, and am considering taking it to our club's Field Day event in the summer. Worst case, I have a couple of USB-charged LED light sticks I could hang with a hook held to the tent ceiling with velcro. These also can be used as a USB power bank if needed, and have both white and red light, so you don't clobber your night vision. The mini is extremely bright, but there's a larger one for $10 more. I don't think the larger one has the red light feature, though. Both charge from USB power, and could be charged during the day with a solar charger. I have a small solar charging panel, but would probably use my FlameStower thermoelectric devices, since I'd have to cook or at least make coffee. The heat makes the electricity as it boils a pot of water or from a stove or campfire.
    I don't think Flamestowers are available anymore, but a Biolite stove will also charge a USB power bank as you cook over it. Someday, I'll get a Biolite, but my Flamestower and Solo Stove work just as well. Here are links to the Flamestowers just so you can see them. There are links to Biolite stoves on the same page. I backed the Flamestower products on Kickstarter and they actually delivered. But they didn't sell well enough to keep the company going. And why yes, I DO tend to overthink things and collect oddball gear. I have several different stoves for running on different fuels (alcohol, butane, isobutane, propane) and adapters to the different gas bottle connections so I can run any stove off any fuel, and the Solo Stove, which burns wood or charcoal.
    I have LED "bulbs" like the ones in this video, but they aren't self-contained, they have a USB cable so they can be daisy-chained and powered from a USB power bank. I did my best to run EVERYTHING off USB if possible, so I could standardize on USB power for most things. One of my 12v power banks I use for my portable ham radios also has a USB output socket. If I have access to AC power, I can charge it while I use it. Ham radio "Field Day" usually has AC power from generators, but they sometimes run out of gas, and the battery would keep my radio running until they got the generator refueled. You can find out more about Field Day if you like, here: www.arrl.org/field-day

      This is a very thorough response to lighting/hook options for the tent and I do appreciate it! I like your idea of the LED strip lights, and am going to look into them. Another viewer provided an option using a tent stake, so I tried it out, created a video, and added a card to this video at about 3 minutes. It works pretty well and is not permanent. Thanks for the info on the Field Day. I've been interested in leaning about the Ham radio, and it's just my luck that my home unit is offering free classes during the month of February. Unfortunately, they're in Utah and I'm not.Thanks again!

    • @JennyEverywhere
      @JennyEverywhere 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RachelinRealLife no problem. Glad to do it. I got some of the white EL wire, and it puts out enough light to see what you're doing in the dark, but it's not what I'd call "bright". That's for a 16-foot length. A shorter length might be brighter, but the LED strip might be a better method for giving more usable light.
      Also, if you're looking for lighting that uses very little power, consider the UV Paqlite product line. They're various forms of glow-in-the-dark crystals in a clear plastic matrix. Two of their offerings are combined with small LED that "pump" up the crystals with periodic 3-second bursts of light. Some of their products are large, flat sheets of glowing material that can be hung or stuck just about anywhere. The most useful product is their Version 2 "Mule Light". It has a bright flashlight, and a work light that uses either white or ultraviolet LED lamps to cast light over a wide area. You can slip a glow-in-the-dark insert over that work light, and set the lamp to flash every 2-5 minutes to pump up the glow. That will give you a massively long lasting light, 3 days or so on a single battery charge. It's not a LOT of light, but in the dark it's enough to see by.
      The batteries it works with are very flexible. In particular, they have an 18650 with a built-in USB charger. Just plug in a USB cable, and it charges the battery. There's also a 3-cell AAA module you can use while the LiPo cell is charging.

      You're a wealth of information! The UV Paqlite sounds interesting; I'll have to check it out. I should ping your brain for lighting options for my new condo ;).

    • @JennyEverywhere
      @JennyEverywhere 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RachelinRealLife LOL. Go for LED lighting in the condo. It'll save you a ton of money. I replaced the incandescent bulbs in my house with compatible LED bulbs and they never burn out anymore. If the standard bulb shape doesn't suit your needs, there's tons of different designs of LED fixtures that ONLY use LEDs, and don't have to accommodate older bulb technologies. There's some lovely recessed LED lighting out there that'll last the lifetime of your condo.

    • @RachelinRealLife

    I saw another video where a guy placed a metal tent stake on the mesh top and then used one of the black office binder clips. He just clipped it to the stake from the inside of the tent and the clip handles were now used as hooks. So to recap. Stake on outside clip on inside mesh between the two. I hope I didn't butcher that too much.

    Ok sweetie let me help you Camp More better! Use that tent as your looks like lots of campers so people stay away tent! And go get a 12x12 pop up tent and put a 8x8 pop up tent inside and all the wind and rain and condensation will be out on the other tent and you will be warm and dry inside the other! Works awesome! You can push the 8x8 in to the corner and it gives you four feet of space to step inside and take off your shoes then step into the other tent! Also area for Coleman chest inside little storage area! Make a new video and try this!

      Hi, Brian, sorry about the late response! My comment notifications don't seem to be coming through like they used to. But if it helps any, I did have a video for a solution someone suggested here in the comments, th-cam.com/video/YhGA5NvU-Rc/w-d-xo.html. There is supposed to be an info card that pops out at about 3:17, that shows the suggestion, but maybe it's not noticable.

    Well I am 5 foot 8 and you couldn't even fit 4 of me in there my tent is 7 by 8 and they say it fits three. That would be extremely handy when it is is just about to rain and you got to put your tent up. How waterproof is that tent

    Hey Rachael. I was finally able to use my colman 4 person and try the tent stake trick. It worked great and I had a heavy lantern hanging from it with no problems. The only problem I had with the tent. And maybe you can tell me if yours is the same, the door will not zip shut if the tent is staked to the ground. I tried adjusting all the corners and the end result was I had to take the stakes out of the (long) ends and let them hover in the natural position they were in. The zipper actually separated on one of the doors because it was pulling so hard on the door opening. Thanks again!

      Good to know, Florida. I have the same issue with my door, wasn't sure if it was just my tent. Having used it so much now, the door has stretched some so I don't have to pull the door towards the side.

    • @RachelinRealLife
      @RachelinRealLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The zippers have actually gotten better with use. It wasn't so much the zipper, but the door material not being quite wide enough. I'd have to pull the door and tent wall together to get it to zip completely. Not sure if this was just my tent or what, but when it's been in the sun, and now that I've used it so much, I don't have much of a problem. I am able to zip it without pulling the zippers together. If that makes any sense...

    For hanging things at any point you want, buy 1 flat small round magnet with metal body with a hole in it (like a smaller version of what is used to go "magnet fishing" and 1steel washer.
    Tie a cord looped in a knot through magnet hole to hang a hook, use a similar size, round steel washer outside to fasten the inside magnet anywhere you want. Presto. Just don't use a heavier magnet than you need or your tent could sag if your tent doesn't use sturdy poles ot taught tie downs.

    • @RachelinRealLife
      @RachelinRealLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes yes! This is a great idea. I've actually been thinking of something similar. Seems like I've seen a magnet with a carabiner clip on the end that might work, if they exist of course. Maybe that is similar to what you're describing. Either way, thanks much for the suggestion!!

    • @grinninggoat5369
      @grinninggoat5369 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RachelinRealLife , welcome. Don't go with a magnet weighted down with fancy metal clips if you can, use just the magnet and twine loop, you'll just puddle more water if you put it on top of yuur tent and not the side if there is a lot of droop in the fabric of the tent. The lighter the better when in use. Also, no need for the extra expense. You can pick up lots of the the bare magnets and a stainless steel washers at a Home Building box store or farm supply store really cheap compared to a single camping item pre-made and sold as such.
      You can also sew the round magnets into the edges and corners of tarps and other fabrics like a small pack and hold a tarp onto anything with even a piece of scrap steel soup can if you'd lose the cheap steel washers.
      I have two strong but small neodymium magnets sewn into the top corner edges of my small backpack and I can just snap my pack fabric to the side of the car while loading it from the trunk. It would also help hold trash bags up to the side of a tent or car on the outside when you have a lot to pick up and dispose of before leaving....
      Magnets are wonderful time savers while camping. Use them on wet blankets folded a bit at the edge on a clothes line that are too heavy for clothes pins alone to hold in a breeze.
      I once used two a strong neodymium magnets to put in my wet boots and stick to the trunk of my car on the way home... they were dry when I got home. But I was sweating bullets over maybe losing them along the way. Lol
      Bigger neodymium Magnets on a rope are fun if you don't want to fish but are near a stream or lake, you never know what you'll drag out while just passing the time and it helps clean up the area for any swimmers and wildlife... not to mention fi ding car keys in tall grass... lol

      You are correct. This tent is mainly used as a garage for my gear and I sleep in my car. Any time I've slept in the tent has been in fair weather to light rain, except one time. I would not recommend this in East coast rain, unless you have additional cover. I've been in a down poor, in this tent, and it doesn't do well. If it did, I'd make my own footprint using Tyvek.

      My tent has held up well in the year + I've had it, and has been very sturdy. As you might have seen in my multiple camping videos; after many uses, setting it up and taking it down, I've never had issues with the poles.
      My only annoyance with the tent is the door pulls somewhat when it's zipped up. Someone suggested not staking the tent down too tight. The door has never popped open on me however, and is not as tight after having it for a while.
      Despite the door, I think the tent is great! And I even bought one as a gift. Hope this helps!
