When Carrie pulled out her Iron Maiden record, I felt simultaneously that the world stopped making sense and that suddenly everything makes sense. I know that sounds idiotic, but I have been such a huge Maiden fan for years, and I like lots of metal, but I also like lots of hip hop, and indie music, and I guess I naturally compartmentalized all these different genres in my mind. Like I would never make a Playlist that had Metallica and Lupe Fiasco, but I love them both. On some level I know it's all music, and maybe it's just commercial marketing that makes me want to separate it all into polished little categories, like each one exists in a vacuum, never to be combined, pretending that they never influence one another. Carrie holding up that record just made the world a better place. Now she just needs to put a bird on it.....
That's a good idea. Something we can consider incorporating into Amoeba.com. We do list the artist's picks there, but we don't currently mention the audio clips we choose.
Franco Estrubia you must think the hate is only one sided? Metal heads think this style of music is amateurish at best. I don’t agree with it but why can’t we enjoy both without being so snobbish about it. The beauty of life is we can enjoy different things.
It's beautiful how real music appreciation by respected artists can be shared with us. No fkn music industry/pseudoscience labeling shit to dictate what we should buy/hear/taste.
You don't have to, but it would be appreciated if you could put up the song titles along with the band names. With some songs it isn't neccesary, like Run To The Hills, but the ones where the musical excerpt is only instrumental and thus leaves nothing to get a title on, like Giles Giles and Fripps, could very well prove to be a bitch to find. Regardless, thanks for helping me and many others find good new bands.
This was such a fun episode. Man, Wild Flag came and went too quickly. I loved the hell out of that album when it first came out and still do today. Depressing to think we'll likely never see them do anything as a group ever again. :(
Mary Timony is on a whole other level, if you revisit what she did through out the 90's and early 2000's. It makes me sad to see her just banging out chords and going "garage." I'm glad she's happy, but the melodies and music she created with her guitar, keyboards & voice, back in the day was incredibly imaginative and unique.
Ex hex is okay. And yeah, I've listened all of her stuff that she's put out but I think @razorjules was referring to Ex Hex being less creative. I think there's some to truth to that. It's still good guitar work, but it's not breaking any boundaries like her previous body of work. Don't get me wrong though, I love Mary and she can do no wrong. If she's happy doing it then more power to her.
pretty lame, first that these ladies can't find anything after 1985 to like, and second that nostalgia cycles being what they are, the only things left from
Man…you blow. Lighten up. One thing to say lame but you call them dishonest too? So you say their taste sucks…but not only that they’re lying about it too? Issues Alert! I hope you’ve lightened up the last 8 years since your post. 😊

i'd always suspected that mary might be a prog queen.
Nice!!!, I have the same Giles, Giles and Fripp LP. Love the way it's recorded.
"I feel like the meat in a Lionel Richie sandwich right now" - Carrie Brownstein
Shenzi Music poto
"Totally overused." not unlike, "put a bird on it."
mary is a babe
that was so killer when she pulled out iron maiden near the end.
These ladies rocked! Really cool episode. They seemed so genuine and fun
I wanna go record shopping with Mary Timony.
Man i love Carrie Brownstein, i miss seeing Sleater-Kinney here in portland.......To balance this out Amoeba should do a Corin Tucker Whats in my bag.
It's up now! 12 years later 😅
Mary loves Fragile, too? *melting*
I love Carrie Brownstein!
Helium!

three rad enough chicks doin' it up at the record store
There she goes is about heroin.
it makes my heart smile to know that carrie brownstein likes iron maiden! too many punk/alt rock people hate on metal.
Franco Estrubia you must think the hate is only one sided? Metal heads think this style of music is amateurish at best. I don’t agree with it but why can’t we enjoy both without being so snobbish about it. The beauty of life is we can enjoy different things.
carrie is 100 times more awsome for likeing iron maiden
She couldn't make it that day unfortunately.
Sleater Kinney and Helium in the same band!!!hell yea
and The Minders my man
The La's are quite popular, but they don't get enough credit for making great music.
It's beautiful how real music appreciation by respected artists can be shared with us. No fkn music industry/pseudoscience labeling shit to dictate what we should buy/hear/taste.
There's got to be a Portlandia sketch in "vinyl nanny"
This is a tough guy competition.
what;s the name of the girl on the right? LOVING her picks.
mary timony, check out her band helium from the 90s
This is absolutely why I subscribe to Amoeba's channel. Great one!
Mary Timony! I had no idea Carrie was in a band with her. I knew they knew each other from back in my Olympia days but had no idea!
Mary is a real one!
That was a fun episode.
What shirt is Mary wearing?? Dimmu Borgir?
When she mentioned that Lionel Ritchie album I thought she called it Pants Low Down

They do this now! I think thanks to your feedback 😅
Rebecca is absolutely adorable ❤️ She's my current celeb crush.
Mary is looking cute. She teaches guitar?
The other day I was reminded of a Philip Larkin poem
Like the Choices and there are a lot of YES fans out there
portlandia

I had no idea her and Carrie were in this band! I've been under a rock. 😅
This was such a fun episode. Man, Wild Flag came and went too quickly. I loved the hell out of that album when it first came out and still do today. Depressing to think we'll likely never see them do anything as a group ever again. :(
The coolest.
What is Mary's shirt? It's tight.

Check out "Ex Hex." Mary's still making her own music, following her own vision, and crushing it.
I think he was specifically referring to Ex Hex.

@razorjules Yeah, I feel this on a deep level.

Motels. Awesome. I grew up in the brothers jourards beach house. 🥂
i love mary
bon iver holocene
Coolest ladies ever.
Got to meet Mary after a solo show in Denton TX around the early 2000’s. She was super sweet and kind. Great sense of humor.
The LA's cracking band from Liverpool
The movie punk at 4:52 looks kinda like D. Boon if he had a yellow mohawk.
wow kind of random and fuck yes i will so be the vinyl nanny!!!!
a beautiful woman who loves "Yes". You should call me.
She bought In the Wake of Poseidon by King Crimson. One of my favorite vinyls I have bought. When I saw that I felt like she was my soul mate.
mary marry moi
What movie keeps being referenced from 4:36 to 5:00?
How much does the vinyl nanny job pay and who do I call?
Or, "Okay...that's a sweet ass-sandwich." As I transcribed it.
Tokyo Tapes rules!!
OMG thank you for that! I love Wild Flag, but I also absolutely adore Mary Timony.
Mar is so fucking cool
I'll be your vinyl babysitter Wild Flag.

Cool!
Shopping for records IS hope.
Mary Timony......mmm-mm
Where's Fred?!
killer
Only discovered this now. Really interesting, And: No way, The La's! Surely among my top albums of all time.
Pants slow down?
Mary is looking so hot these days! You can def hear Yes and the Ventures in her music. Also, she's the only one that has good music taste imo
every single part of this comment made me cringe
I didn't know the younger generations knew of Yes, Robert Fripp, and King Crimson. There's hope for us yet.
lol, that younger generation you speak of is older then you think.
What's in my bag? Live it up by Airbourne and Heart Attack by Asteroids Galaxy Tour. Now go look at the videos👉
What is a wild flag
A shitty band?
its a lifestyle
woodland nixie
God I hate the wild flag band. Stealing black flag name. Wild flag isn’t even punk it’s bs pop who have punk rock music in there blood
Just because it's a flag?! That's the dumbest sh*it I've heard! And I'm a Black Flag and Flag fan. 😅
I like Mary Timony. And I like Jacky Sanchez too.
If all they bought was the La’s album it would all be worth it
Having seen Portlandia, I'm surprised Carrie is this funny.
Everyone gets to have an opinion. Portlandia is very funny. Top of the line tongue in cheek satire.
Signed,
Portland native
Lee Wang so you're saying Portlandia is the YOU version of Television?
She's always been so shy and quiet but a firecracker when she plays live so I was shocked to see her so sketchy comedy and the like!😅❤
teeth are weird
You're weird 😅
two out of three cross eyed girls. What are the odds?
Lazy eye; not cross eyed
Carrie Bronstein is unwatchable...
Lol
Brownstein* idiot.
pretty lame, first that these ladies can't find anything after 1985 to like, and second that nostalgia cycles being what they are, the only things left from
Thank God people don't need your permission / approval to like or dislike something.
wow you seem so bothered over something so trivial. you must be such a joy to be around.
Man…you blow. Lighten up. One thing to say lame but you call them dishonest too? So you say their taste sucks…but not only that they’re lying about it too? Issues Alert!
I hope you’ve lightened up the last 8 years since your post. 😊
