    This face mask pattern is perfect! I’ve made and given away many hundreds of masks for family, friends and friends of friends. Now, over 2 years into this pandemic I’m still making masks with the 2.5 filter. Thank you for the excellent tutorial. My motto throughout all this has been: “Helpful not helpless”. Here’s to fighting the spread of Covid one awesome face mask at a time!

    Love this pattern. I've now made about two hundred of them. Things I've learned:
    • I make nose bridges out of 14ga copper household electrical wire that I hammer mostly flat and cut to about 3-1/2 inches. These seem to hold the nose shape better on these heavier masks.
    • I make a nose pad out of 3/16" thk X 3/8" wide weatherstripping that I stich into the paired liner & shell before sewing on the bias tape.
    • I make the shell out of 7oz twill and the liner out of a cotton bedsheet.
    • I apply a 'fray-stop' adhesive at the nose and chin. Seems to keep those seams from coming apart during laundering.
    Very nice pattern!

    I love this mask! Watched over 30 videos and read all comments. This one fits so well! I added bias ties that I made due to elastic shortage. The low requested price should not deter you from using this pattern. I made at least 5 different masks and this is the only one that fit properly.

      Did you make it with duck canvas? If so, how did it work out? Was it breathable?

    • @jenahammond111
      @jenahammond111 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The duck cloth i tried breathing through was too thick. I used a 100% cotton weave on top. Backed that layer with OlyFun multipurpose material (that a lot of recycle grocery bags are made out of) another post recommended not using fusible interfacing. The back facing with filter pocket was cotton flannel. I made the filter from Halyard H600 sterilization material. I twisted 19 gauge wire together with a drill and capped the ends with shrink wrap tubing for the nose wire insert. I have washed these multiple times and they are holding up great! A lot more work but once the pieces were cut out, I was able to make 18 pretty quickly for “essential employee” family members.

    I have made several of these. Once you make a few, it does get easy. I insert the elastic in the seams, but I don't tie it. I just let the person I am making it for adjust the the tie for the fit they feel is comfortable. Each mask seems to fit each person that I sew for just fine.

  • @sfnorris11

    Love the pattern but I don't have bias tape or serger. Instead I made both liner, front and chin and sewed it right sides together and turned. For the chin - I cut and sewed the straight side of the chin pieces (right sides tog), turned and pressed it flat. Then pinned the chin piece to the inside while I sewed around the mask leaving a little space to slip a wire in. I made a pocked for the ear elastic and it looks neat and clean and no bias tape.

  • @Anilu777
    @Anilu777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I made several of these from Jean on the outside and pillowcase material on the inside in 2020. Still use them although I shouldn’t have used twist ties for the nose piece as it eventually warped in the washing.

    Thank you for sharing this video, it’s very helpful!! Please try to use latex-free elastics or rubber bands if you are donating these masks to hospital workers. Regular elastics are made of natural latex, which is a sap from the hevea tree. About 17% of healthcare workers are allergic to latex because of the gloves they wear and their symptoms can worsen if their skin is in contact with latex. It’s a cumulative allergy, like bee stings, so the symptoms can become severe overnight when you’re exposed to latex. Once you develop this allergy it’s for life and there’s no treatment or cure. It’s best to avoid wearing latex / NRL gloves too if you can. The safe ones are NITRILE or VINYL gloves. Stay safe 🙌

      Yes! Use 2 layers of BLUE SHOP TOWELS. I'm sure you've seen them -they look and feel like super heavy duty blue paper towels - but they are NOT made of paper. They are actually made of polypropylene (non toxic) same fabric used to make N-95 masks - although the polypropylene fabric used in N-95s filters even better. You can read all about it in this Business Insider article. They refer to them as "Polyester hydro knit towels" (i guess hydro knit is referring to the manufacturing process). They did testing on lots of brands and found 2 brands of these blue shop towels filtered better than the Scott's Pro brand of blue shop towels (which is the most common brand i've seen) - "Zep Industrial Towels" and "Tool Box Shop Towels":

    Use vacuum cleaner hepa filter bags cut to size or Filtrete AC filter with the highest filtration. Must also seal the chin seam and the nose dart seam with low temp hot glue, silicone sealant or a seam sealant for making raincoats. You can surface sanitize and dry in sunshine to disinfect daily or as needed. Washable filter material is available.

      l l BridalSewing Techniques (utube channel) has brilliant tutorial, including source of washable hepa filter material. Filti, a company in KS, retails a sizeable piece for about $25 plus shipping via their website. I easily purchased, but not yet rec'd.

      Edward Yee Other users report that it is. I have not rec'd my Filti shipment yet, so have not tested it. It has a side meant to be used on the outside so the air is best filtered. Vacuum hepa bags are usually not washable, but Miele makes washable ones.
