This video is current for 0.G, but if you're playing on experimental, there have been some changes relevant to this video: Namely, you can no longer practice melee to 3 without a book. You can practice from 0 to 1 to get your first point for free (and you should do this) but after that you will need to learn in combat, be taught by an NPC, or get the next practice recipe via a relevant book.
I subbed today. I love me some Cataclysm 101 with Worm Girl, finally learning how to play after watching hundreds of hours of CDDA playthroughs over the years. Thanks 🤗
Maybe a sort of "What to do when..." series? What to do when surrounded, what to do when you have more loot than you can carry, that kind of thing. You could also do the basics of farming or cars.
Wow, this is so helpful! I might actually play this game. It's always seemed so obtuse and intimidating. Dwarf Fortress is in the same boat, so if you have any interest in covering that game I think your format would really fit it.
Hello there, idk if this will reach you but there is a tutorial covering basic mechanics made by Kruggsmash, a Dwarf Fortress youtuber. Its titled "Your First Fortress" i think. Hope this helps!
EDIT: You were right, I was wrong. There are two feints. One unarmed, one armed. A minor mistake I noticed - Feint says that it only procs when the player is unarmed. Other than that, great video. I never thought about stunning as a tactic for bash weapons, but yeah, that would give them a niche. I tend to stick to knives and dex builds for my characters, so learning about bash like this is great.
Bashing weapons rarely reach the extreme heights of damage that blades and spears do, but stunlocking enemies with rapid-fire combos works surprisingly well, especially in the early game.
This may be dependent on the version. in 0.F-3 Brawling-Feint works both for armed and unarmed once you have Melee 3. There are actually 2 "Feint" entries in the Brawling description, with the armed-melee one being further down.
there is no practice though, as far as I know, so getting to melee 3 can be challenging and Feint is such an important skill. A miss takes 1.5 movement points usually, which means, that with most weapons not only will you miss, but you will miss your next turn as well, granting the enemies 1 free turn
Found you from your Fear and Hunger videos. Your Cataclysm videos are making me feel like I could give this game an actual go and could even enjoy it! (I bounce off of most roguelikes because there’s a hundred controls and no tutorial, so your videos have been a god-send.)
I’ve just found and subbed to your channel. We need, no we WANT all the videos! Kidding aside, I hope you do well. I like what you are doing so far. =]
Thanks again for another great tutorial! As far as what I'd like to see, maybe something on ranged weapons and guns? Some tips on how to hunt/live off the land would be great as well. I'd also love a vehicle building tutorial, but that's more late-game.
I really like this review. I would add an argument for the survivor machete as an early game cutting weapon. It requires melee 5 + fab (?5 ?6) which is achievable within a few days and can be made without a forge (improvised survivor machete =blade + duct tape) and this can be upgraded to a survivor machete with a soldering iron and solder. The advantage is that it's a great deal more damaging (to unarmoured opponents) vs most alternatives and is usable in that niche well into late game (its comparable to a longsword) with the tradeoff that it's not clippable to a belt loop and requires either storage space or a scabbard to store. I don't tend to use it (I find melee is mostly a backup most of the game and feel the electrified Baton is a more useful and versatile if less damaging weapon that clips to a belt and has better results against armour and electrified zombies) but for an early game weapon that punches well above the investment required to get it I think there's not too many better options than the survivor machete.
As a long time player of this game let me add some intermediate level advice for advancing beyond your first weapons: First, the best weapons will always be something purpose built to be a weapon. A fire axe is good as a weapon, but a battle axe will be better. At the very least prioritize weapons that say they're sturdy in their item information, in my hundreds of hours I've never had one of these fall apart in the middle of hours-long endgame fights. Spears are very unwieldy and not recommended, keep in mind a lot of your combat will be in tight hallways where the reach won't be very viable. That said, piercing weapons are probably the best all-rounder damage type for being able to quickly down armored and unarmored foes alike. A rapier is ideal, but I also keep a combat knife as a backup weapon if I have literally nothing else left to use for some reason. Blunt weapons still have a niche for being the weapon type least likely to conduct electricity. There are monsters that will shock you if you hit them with conductive, metal weapons. The wooden haft most blunt weapons have will insulate you from being electrocuted when you strike them. Being shocked will seriously hinder you in combat. Cutting weapons have a special niche: getting a good blade is usually difficult but their damage to unarmored targets is unrivaled. The biggest, heaviest blades are also still less unwieldy than a heavier spear and in the hands of a skilled, survivor they can literally do enough damage to turn a monster into ground meat.
I would love to see all the actions you can do with an NPC. What a thriving survival base looks like crops and water tools maybe vehicle. How to train animals. Finally I would like to see traps. One day when I have more time to get involved I would love to see a base defense made with this game. However I think the closest I would get is setting up many traps in a town then setting off alarms to draw enemies in.
it would be interesting to know how exactly to raid cities early in the game almost every quest from another survivor in the shelter at the start of the run requires you to get something from the center of the city, where loads of zombies prowling around most of this quests also have a timer, like 10 days, which implies that you can actually do them right from the start?
Good thinking. I definitely want to cover urban stealth and evasion soon, and that will probably naturally lead into a video about being successful at urban raids.
you can do night raids and get pretty deep in the city very early, if you know, what you are doing. Avoid making noise, keep moving in more crowded areas, to avoid being smelled by the zombies. Know your way out, in case you run into a nasty surprise (which you will). In the day, you can actually outrun most zombies and loose them in buildings, when daytime raiding early, keep an eye out for zombies that are faster than you, that you can not simply walk away from. In both cases avoid fighting as much as possible, as getting hurt will drop your speed and with low speed you can't just walk away from things. and once a normal zombie is faster than you, you are dead.
Loved the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann ref. TheCommanderFluffy happens to be a nickname I gave Viral and decided to use. My alt accounts are usually named SpiralKingFluffy.
Thanks! My mic isn't the greatest and I don't have a good room to record in, but I'm listening to feedback and slowly learning how to make the most of my setup.
Strange, I'm able to access the forums while logged out. Are you sure a sub is currently required to read? It should only prompt you when you try to post. When I started the LP, I was updating 2-3 times per week. I resumed in October, but my current rate is closer to two or three times per month as I have some serious work obligations for the foreseeable future.
@@mutantwormgirl Oh you are right! They no longer require registering. Love the series by the way! Excellent combination of story telling, explainations, and commentary. Time to re-read the whole thread to catch up!
I usually follow an RPG approach to the game, where I set a quest for my character right from the start and try to achieve it. Jennet, a character I played recently, was on a quest to find a relative, so he had to search three locations completely. I choose a private resort, a mansion and a hospital - had to find those and completely raid them. after I finished, I just retreated to my base and called it a day. With my second last character I started in prison, as a imprisoned hacker, who knew about some secret government stuff and my quest was to find and raid a science lab, to see, if the gov had anything to do with the cataclysm, and my current char is trying to destroy the triffid grove, that ransacked his village. Whatever path I choose, I will usually run into obstacles I have to overcome, so I have to find certain items or answers to certain enemies to be able to progress. But CDDA is a open world sandbox game, you can simply hide and try to survive. Buuuuuut in general. Push your crafting skills, try to find a vehicle, try to get armed with a rifle and enough bullets to start a war, then start a war on something.
I have a screenshot LP linked in the description, but as for video, It's something I may start once I've had a little more experience with video editing. Currently just getting these tutorials done takes me way more work than it should.
OK you can some of the game's mechanics / menus / controls, etc ... but can you ACTUALLY play this game and demonstrate real in game use of those mechanics in real situations?

Yes! Come mother and father, the Worm Girl is back on the television!
Bah. First Jack Webb and Bob Hope, and now Worm Girl, too. I miss when the big stars were all on the radio, like proper entertainers!
A blessing indeed!
Oh hell yeah, now I can listen to worm girl explain CDDA mechanics while I fail to use them effectively and die horribly in game!
Soothing crafting directions set to ominous music isn't what I thought I needed today, but it's what I needed today.
Awesome! 3rd video, subscribing for more! Best tutorial style I've seen for this game. Thanks!
