Theres still a lot of neon PED signals here in San Diego but they have been upgrading to countdown's a lot, and now I am seeing less and less of them which is sad. In my opinion, neon PED signals are the best because they last the longest, even longer than LED's because a lot of neon signals were installed in the early 90's and they are still going to this day. Also they are a bigger size, easy to see, and they don't flicker like LED's do.
The city of Fullerton has been upgrading neon pedestrian signals to countdown's a lot, and now I am seeing less and less of them which also makes me sad. In my opinion, I may like LED's, but mostly, I like neon's because they are brighter.
Walk is white not green not because green is too expensive but green confuses opposing traffic waiting for the light to turn green they drivers would drive when they see green walk so many people would die thanks to the green walk. Now that walk is white there are less people dying just to cross the street. Another fact: If you press the push to walk button it would pause the cycle if it's on so it always shows don't walk until someone pushes it. 0:32 Walk sign switches to finish crossing if you started don't cross wait for walk.
I remember Boston used to have a ton of those incandescent hand/man symbols like on the bottom left, and a few of the neon ones too. I also recall in the early/mid-2000s, a number of them were modified so the hand would be LED and the man would be incandescent. Nowadays pretty much all of them are LED, and many have countdown timers.
Bummer.... I don't really care for the countdown timers really if they are going to have the countdown then start counting down when the hand flashes.... I'll that makes more sense
Tyler Copeland They are now only supposed to count down when the hand flashes, according to the MUTCD. They still serve their purpose that way, and people will have a better understanding what the flashing hand means.
Also, regarding that Dialight LED unit, I really see no reason for making an LED overlay hand/man unit for a 16" pedestrian signal housing. The symbols are the same size as the side-by-side versions, so it's basically a waste of space. Having an overlay hand/man setup in a 16" housing only makes sense if it's a countdown pedestrian signal, IMO. (This is probably why I haven't seen any of those "regular" overlay 16" LED units in my area; they've always gone with either side-by-side or countdown for those housings.)

San Diego has a ton of the bottom right one and the top left one. They’re so old.

If you’re seeing less pedestrian signals with countdowns, you should tell the city to enable the audible countdown on the pedestrian buttons.
