Been waiting for this one for a while. In my opinion this is the best SUV period all around. Not stupidly priced like a Merc, reliable, beautiful and enough horsepower. And also well equipped even as standard.
I just bought one after having an RDX for a year and a few months I was able to transition to one of these for MSRP (which right now is difficult) and was only upside down $1500. I got the advanced trim and am totally thrilled, it’s the most luxurious thing I’ve ever been in. It’s currently at Ceramic pro getting full front PPF and a 2 year costing and getting the leather seats coated, can’t wait to get her back!
Alex, as much as you dislike the center rear shoulder belt coming from the ceiling, there would be NO way to have the removable center seat (which you love) and have the belt anywhere except the ceiling.
I bought this type a advanced gold color week ago, it is so smooth, and steering wheel is super soft, handling is amazing and driving in comfort level just relaxing daily
Love the new MDX! This Type S just sweetens the deal!! Keep the Aviator, this looks far better. The XT6 is my usual preference but until Cadillac gives us a XT6-V or at least V Sport...Acura for the win!
If the Navigator was you know, even mildly reliable (lots of issues since launch), I would take it over this...better on inside and outside but this is very good looking and comes with the expected reliability of a Honda... But...I am waiting for something with 7 seats in this price point that also is an EV...nothing pops to mind for me yet as an option...
I have always liked the MDX, and this one looks stunning. But, if the CX 60 release in Europe is any indication of how the CX 90 will be for us, I'll gladly wait and give it a chance.
The MDX already had an adaptive suspension (front only). It was magneto-rheologic instead of an air suspension. Mysteriously it disappeared in the previous redesign. It worked very well.
It looks attractive on the outside, but the dash layout and the touchpad kills it for me. I lived with that system for several days with an RDX loaner, and I hated every minute of it. Just put a touch screen in already. The drive mode button being so big and centered in the dash is ridiculous for something that very few people will ever touch, and there’s way, way too much piano black. Finally, the MDX doesn’t “feel” very big on the inside - I don’t know why but it feels a bit cramped for its size. We had this problem with our last-gen MDX, and when we checked out the new one we felt the same way. For the physical size of the vehicle, the interior should feel more spacious.
I didn't mind Brian's laid-back outfits in previous videos. But this casual attire sure looks much better and expected for AoA. Keep getting better, gents!

I think for the money....the Lincoln Aviator, hands down!!
When the new Aviator first came out it checked all the boxes for what we wanted in a luxury suv. There is even a hybrid variant as well, which Acura has none available anymore. But we stopped considering the Aviator after seeing the low JD Powers/CR ratings and reading so many online consumer reviews on how unreliable it is 😓

Why why why do they bother to put these rubber band 21 inch wheels...added weight...slower 0-60..put on some forged 18's on that sucka and see the acceleration ,fuel mileage, braking and handling all improve by a noticeable amount..
@@f181234 they usually don’t have smaller wheels because they usually have monster brakes on these suvs to slow them down. @@drivescene6747 Lexus won’t bother making RWD bespoke platforms for any of their cars. Their RWD cars aren’t selling well at all. The LS sells in 4 digit numbers not 5 digits like the other rivals. The ES and RX each that are fwd outsell the LS and LX and IS by many many miles. If Lexus commits to fwd they are doomed and will be wiped out by genesis before they know it. Unless of course the RX magically becomes RWD on a bespoke platform like their GS platform but more updated and more powerful and definitely more luxurious like the LC. At least they got that advanced model on the MDX. Acura totally Shafted us TLX Type-S owners. No digital dash, no HUD, no rear heated seats, no spare tire, no auto dimming side mirrors and USA doesn't get the 360 camera.
I was so confused by the "2" roller bag score and accompanying video of 2 roller bags, plus Alex sitting in the back. How does 18.1 cu ft of storage space in an MDX only fit 2 roller bags, while a Camry with a 15.1 cu ft trunk can fit 5 roller bags. It's almost like SUV cargo capacity numbers are a lie.
Because it's cubic feet, which counts height as well. Theoretically, if you can block off the bags from falling into the third row, you could probably fit 6.
You have to take into account Length Width and Height. I have a 2015 Camry XSE and the trunk is wide and deep but not tall. This suv is wide and tall but not deep
@@musicmann7891 Exactly. I find Alex's reviews very thorough, and I'm hoping he stops relying on provided "cu ft" numbers when describing/comparing vehicles' cargo capacity. I was recently car shopping and spent a lot of time measuring trunks and hatches. Because in the real world, it's length, width and depth that matter most to me when packing a trunk. Sure, it's nice to have a little extra "headroom" in a hatch when the main "trunk" space is filled, but if the "footprint" of a hatch is small or too vertically proportioned, then all that hatch-provided space is not important. I won't pack to the ceiling blocking rearward visibility. I had dreams of making the Acura Integra work for my family. And went in with an open mind when checking out the hatch in part because so many folks rave about how roomy the Integra and Civic hatchbacks are. But for me, it was a big nope.
You can Flash the memory on a Turbo Civic and get another 50Hp, has anyone done it on these yet? 400+ would be cool. The Type S MDX has hardened gears in the transmission for severe duty.
If only that turbo V6 was pointing the right direction (longitudinal rather than "sideways," which just reminds me it's a front wheel drive architecture.)
Really nice car overall. They did a great job with the styling inside and out. It's just that......well, they type S costs as much as an X5 and still slower, plus the lack of a touchscreen may be a dealbreaker. Looks to be more spacious inside than an X5 yes, but if you're looking to maximize interior volume you're looking in the wrong class.
Good review video for the Acura MDX Type S. That's nice you have a partner doing the review videos now. I'm glad Acura brought back the Type S badging and also glad that this is their time putting it on a SUV. In terms of performance another mid-size third row seating SUV to include as a competitor is the Jeep Grand Cherokee L with the V8 engine. Performance numbers for that vehicle comes in at 357 horsepower and 390 pound feet of torque. Between the two vehicles, the horsepower is almost identical. Just two more for the Jeep. The major difference between the two would be the pound feet of torque, giving a 36 advantage for the Jeep. It would be nice if the Acura MDX Type S and the Jeep Grand Cherokee L with the V8 engine go head to head in a drag race. That would be interesting. It would be 355 horsepower along with 354 pound feet of torque vs 357 horsepower along with 390 pound feet of torque. The interior for the Jeep Grand Cherokee L in the Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve trims would compete well with the interior found in the Acura MDX Type S. Same premium materials used, almost identical features and almost the same amount of tech found in both vehicles.
Acura's are more of an all weather paved road performance and handling. They can; but, are not really made for off road driving or towing duties like the Jeep. The MDX will drive/handle overall very sporty compared to anything else from Japan or USA in the same price range. Acura's never been a 0-60 mph burner; except, for the NSX.
It would have been nice to have a cover for the exposed latches or have them flush to the floor. Like the option of removing the center seat or just popping it up if you have a long leg adult in the 3rd row to put their legs there. No built in arm rests was a big miss considering Honda's have arm rest on their SUVs and vans.
Having to use the little touch pad thing instead of moving the screen up and making it a touchscreen is the weirdest decision for 2023. The whole dash, shifter, infotainment, etc looks and feels so unintuitive.
@@naveenthemachine Sure they do. I'm pretty sure they don't offer seven seats on their performance models. If you need three seats in the middle row, the cup holders are a reasonable sacrifice. For families with three kids keeping the third row folded (for adequate luggage space) and three kids in the second row is ideal.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Believe it or not my 2007 Honda Odyssey doesn’t lose its cup holders and armrests when the middle seat is removed. Plus it doesn’t lose the middle seat either because it can be stored under the floor. I would call it smart design. Just something about the younger engineers/designers I believe they lost the brilliance of the older generation.
Pretty much all vehicles are steer by wire, shift by wire, throttle by wire, and/or brake by wire. Acura just removed the gear shift because it doesn't shift anything? I have two previous Gen Acura vehicles and it only takes a day to realize how much it cleans up the interior and you have more space with the push buttons.
Aviator for me. A bit more lux means more to me than canyon carving on a vehicle this large. Actually, the RDX looks more appealing to me than the MDX.
Brian I see that Alex sent you into his closet for those 🥜 buster slacks huh 😁? Brian blink twice & grit your 🦷 if Alex changed your factory programming. The amount of detail that you guys put into your reviews is super helpful. I always feel like I’ve really been informed about these vehicles after watching an AOA review. This is a good looking vehicle! I’ve always liked the look of the MDXs. We had one for about ten years and it was a really strong vehicle. They’re not incredibly fun but definitely comfortable and reliable. I’m still not buying this as a 7 seater. It has 7 seats but until a vehicle can comfortably seat 7 Alex type consumers it’s just a 5 seater for me. And in that respect why would I want that over something simple like a Sorento? Good looking vehicle though Acura. Kudos 👏👏👏
During the driving portion of this video, both the camera pointed at Alex and Brian and the forward-facing exterior camera suffered from continuous blurring and pixilating.
I think that the goal is eventually Brian will be doing videos on his own for the channel and Alex is training him as well as getting people used to Brian but I do have to admit it’s weird especially considering we are used to just Alex unlike say TFL, where there are usually 2 hosts/reviewers if not more.
I don't like the two-person format, esp. since Brian is, um, a bit green. Alex knows so much about the entire vehicle market--I want to know his opinion, not Brian's. Alex is basically teeing up questions for Brian to answer. Why?
Nothing unless you need to seat seven. Most brands don't even have that optional on the highest trim levels. It isn't really for adults, but it's realistic to put three kids across the middle, or put a rear-facing child seat in the middle with a kid on each side. For families with three kids it's handy to have three in the middle row and keep the third row folded, only deploying it when your kids have friends along.
The black trimmed wheel wells make it look weird. Big would get rid of those immediately. Other than that, it looks great inside and out. Overall, I would say it's a middle of the pack offering, all things considered. That's more than you can say for the TSX. I still think the Genesis and the Lincoln are head of the class.
For some reason these car critics always name everyone as a competitor except the American competition. They are always quick to mention BMW, Mercedes, Volvo etc but how this doesn't compare to the Aviator or XT6 is beyond me. I think its intentional too....well The Aviator trumps this car in every way. XT6 is not bad either
@@MikeJones-on9vm the XT6 is hot garbage, and there's absolutely no reason to buy it over it's Buick cousin. The Aviator is targeting a very different demographic, that being supple luxury. This is for luxury and sportiness.
Acura got rid of the 17-20 MDX Sport Hybrid powertrain too soon. It had 321hp/289tq from the 3.0L NA engine with 25-27 mpg always. Make the Type-S a Sport Hybrid and you would have +420 hp/tq and 22-24 mpgs always.
True, but the BMW will kill you down the road with expensive maintenance and frequent repairs with overpriced parts. I'd rather have the more reliable Acura.
Did i miss that you mentioned the Genesis GV80 in the beginning but not at the end as a worthy competitor? I have driven the new MDX and was underwhelmed by the standard V6 pushing all that weight so i waited a long time for this one to come out and looks interesting BUT.......now that i have seen some reviews i'm not so sure that other SUV's are not a better option and that they pulled enough out of this engine to justify that price. Yes, i think its more money than it should be especially carrying a huge mistake like the infotainment that i have used and think its horrific to be stuck with that everyday. I would take the Genesis GV80 now over this......
We will all be paying 6 bucks a gallon soon, You can't even find these cars to buy. The world is upside down so lets stop reviewing these cars like it's 2020... Its over

@@naveenthemachine all vehicles have downsides and compromises.
Does it take premium or regular gas?
Premium
Premium recommended.
isn't the aviator the least reliable suv in the world?
Always love the MDX! But just bought the X5. The big turn-off for me with Acura is the push button gear shift.
Me too
Pretty much all vehicles are steer by wire, shift by wire, throttle by wire, and/or brake by wire. Acura just removed the gear shift because it doesn't shift anything? I have two previous Gen Acura vehicles and it only takes a day to realize how much it cleans up the interior and you have more space with the push buttons.
Sooo where are the performance numbers?
I like this format!
Aviator for me. A bit more lux means more to me than canyon carving on a vehicle this large. Actually, the RDX looks more appealing to me than the MDX.
Direct injected only? Anyone knows whethe Honda has figured out how to keep valve stems and intake runners free from carbon deposits?
I like the latest MDX but the Type-S trim isn't just so convincing.
Kudos 👏👏👏
The third row and middle of second row are strictly for kids. This is a family hauler, not for seven adults carpooling.
New channel name: Alex and brad on cars.
I honestly think if Brian is going to go on the EVs, his channel should be called Brian on EVs. Cheezy, but it follows Alex on Autos.
@@MDKN22 As cheesy as the intro music?
During the driving portion of this video, both the camera pointed at Alex and Brian and the forward-facing exterior camera suffered from continuous blurring and pixilating.
Why the second host? Im so confused.
Why?
Beautiful vehicle, but the panel gaps are so pronounced in this color.
I'd left that middle 2nd row seat segment off. Nothing wrong with a 6 seats SAV.
Another failed luxury 3rd row implementation. A 60k+ suv with no AC vents? Wtf Acura.
Fail? Imo I’ve seen much much worse…
Brian 😍
The black trimmed wheel wells make it look weird. Big would get rid of those immediately. Other than that, it looks great inside and out. Overall, I would say it's a middle of the pack offering, all things considered. That's more than you can say for the TSX. I still think the Genesis and the Lincoln are head of the class.
You guys missed the Buick enclave....... I think it's a bigger & better less horsepower SUV
The Buick and the Chevy Traverse are both nice riding vehicles.
Il take Acura over any of those endless money pit German cars any day.
This is way better than the xt6 by a long shot, the aviator is nice tho I wouldn’t say it trumps this but it’s nice.
@@MikeJones-on9vm the XT6 is hot garbage, and there's absolutely no reason to buy it over it's Buick cousin. The Aviator is targeting a very different demographic, that being supple luxury. This is for luxury and sportiness.
@@RemixerUltimate I agree, but I would pick the MDX Type S over the Aviator, xt6 and the Buick.
that infotainment system kills the car completely. Also all that piano black in the interior :(
Acura just needs to add touchscreen functionality with the touchpad and an option other than piano black. Not crazy about the piano black craze.
"coming" soon or "comming" soon?? 👀
Ooops...
With gas being 4.50 a gallon, its not going to sell very well
Acura got rid of the 17-20 MDX Sport Hybrid powertrain too soon. It had 321hp/289tq from the 3.0L NA engine with 25-27 mpg always. Make the Type-S a Sport Hybrid and you would have +420 hp/tq and 22-24 mpgs always.
Type S(low)
Power: weight sucks, worse than a 2007 TL-S, 21 MPG Highway is laughable in 2022, $65k+ and no touch screen? LOL
no reason to buy the tlx, SO SAD
Who is the other guy?
7 seater sporty..? Weird suv to make it a type S.
Why you get a co-journalist? You must didn't want to do reviews by yourself anymore. I guess having two journalists do a review is a trend.
That color....I thought it looked like baby poo too. Can't get over it. Just no.
Otherwise an excellent SUV by all accounts.
I can't stand the new guy. He lacks charisma, seems smug, speaks too quickly & seems awkward overall.
your just a weirdo, that's looking for something to complain about. He's new and trying to gain his footing , it must suck to be so miserable.
He’s still pretty new, give him time to acclimate and find a good rhythm.
I don't know, this is up to well loaded X5 pricing now.
True, but the BMW will kill you down the road with expensive maintenance and frequent repairs with overpriced parts. I'd rather have the more reliable Acura.
I don’t know where you’re finding X5’s brand new for 72k I see used ones with 30k for 69,999
Don't love the tag team. Sorry Brian.. We have more than enough influencers...
That's very poor gas mileage and that infotainment system is awful.
The GV80 is quite a bit smaller and only 3 row in one trim so it's not really that direct of a competitor.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide The X5 doesn't even offer a third row yet you mentioned it.
No touch screen and all that piano black ruins an otherwise good looking vehicle.
We will all be paying 6 bucks a gallon soon, You can't even find these cars to buy. The world is upside down so lets stop reviewing these cars like it's 2020... Its over
Grand Cherokee L V8 might more competitive
