Acura’s first performance SUV may not be a BMW X5 M or even an Audi SQ7 competitor, but it’s $66,700 base price means it’s priced in line with the GV80 3.5T, X5 xDrive40i, GLE450, and Q7 55 TFSI, although it has way more equipment as standard. We also find the standard air suspension to work a lot faster than the optional units of European rivals and the 9-way massaging seats work better than the driver only massage on the Genesis. While we do wish Acura had given this gorgeous SUV at least 400 HP or an electrified option, we were content with the 5.5 second first 0-60 run. Expect us to retest one when we get it for a full week later this year!
I can’t think of a single person who would buy an MDX over a similarly priced X5 or Q7. That touchpad alone is a deal-breaker for my wife and I. It is terrible.

I like my Acura RDX but I can’t help having a wandering eye. The mpg sucks and I don’t really love the spongey brake 😕 I would consider the Lexus NX but the backseat isn’t as roomy. Any suggestions/recommendations?
I was just at the dealer today & this same color was there & let me tell ya this is one good looking SUV, now I do think the wheels could be a little better, but for me it doesn't matter because I would do aftermarket wheels anyway like I've done on my 21 TLX type s, & man would I love an air suspension on mine
Great review! There are so many good choices out there now. I think I have it narrowed down to this or the GV80 Prestige, thoughts on the head to head? They are the same price but I do like the air suspension, remote start, and ELS Stereo of the MDX.
MDX is the way to go. I'm on my 3rd Acura and recently placed an order for an MDX. It's a way better option. Along with the current Hyundais and Kias burning up. I don't think you'd want to side with the Korean OEMs rn
The Apex Blue Pearl with the Light Orchid is the perfect color combination just like the white or silver exterior & red leather interior color combo, & the Tiger Eye Pearl with the Light Orchid interior
@Thomas Boyd, actually, more power doesn’t always mean worse fuel economy. Manufactures tend to mute & tame their luxury drive trains by way of constricted, less-than-optimal breathing intake-exhaust systems, and by detuning the engine. There’s no question Honda can turn this into a 450 hp screamer if they wanted…but they wisely didn’t. More fuel economy & power will have to come from aftermarket components & tuning.
@@Snookynibbles My brain hurts trying to process all that information. But anyways. Acura is focused on long term reliability. It's not just about performance.
I’m torn in between the Acura MDX Type S or the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve (2 row). I prefer the Jeep’s exterior design, and Acura’s interior design. However I wish Acura would’ve added more extended stitched leather and an alcantara headliner, because the Jeep actually feels more expensive inside. I also prefer the Jeep’s tech vs the Acura’s. The Acura is more sporty to drive, but I respect the fact that the Jeep is a true off roader. This is such a tough decision…can someone help 😂??
I know TWO people that have had to do dealer buy-backs on the new Grand Cherokees. My boss and a buddy, both for electrical issues. In terms of reliability, I’d go Acura between these two

I have a TLX Type S and the fuel economy is horrible, the only real downside to the car and I suspect would be with this MDX Type S. You can drop regular in this as premium is only recommended, which I may have to start doing with the prices lately, almost $1.85/l in Toronto area.
Great review, Sofyan. I like this Type-S, possibly best in class to me. What I love about Acura, which so many people don't understand is that they're not about being basically a clone of the Germans. Acura chooses to forge its own identity, also proven with the TLX/TLX Type-S. Then again, this has always been the MO for Honda/Acura, which is probably why they have such an aggressively loyal following (though they are still lacking a bit on really delivering what the rabid fans want). Kudos to Acura with this car. Kudos to your passenger for looking so good in that seat LOL.
@@naveenthemachine That is the worst argument to debate why the MDX type S isn't a true performance SUV. Correct me if I am wrong, but this appears to only be about 1/4 second quicker 0-60 than your first run in your RDX A Spec Advance, and on the second run, again, only 1/4 second quicker than the 2nd run in your RDX, correct? I understand the vehicle disparity, but to me it was a cash disparity for such minimal performance increase, as I do not need 3 rows. As much as you guys do a good job of the exterior shots etc., the zooming while filming was a bit rough to watch, did you switch up the camera equipment?

Thanks for the review. I just got my MDX Advance (non type s) for over a month now and I wish I got this Type S instead. Also, Acura shows on the digital display instrument panel that the MDX's rear lights up when brake is pressed but in reality not the full length of rear lights light up.... only the outer lights. It would be cooler if the full length of chicane brake lights works just like the what the instrument panel shows. Most luxury SUVs work this way.
Your video seems to be a bit wobbly for the last view videos i see, and the zooming action is a bit rough, i see that you're using iPhone (either 12/13 Pro Max) hope you'll sorted that out next time
im just a little underwhelmed with this whole Type S relaunch. dont get me wrong im thrilled they're making these cars but i just struggle to justify the cost when they get their doors blown off by the competition. I'd just stick with a regular MDX
I think Acura did what needed to be done here. They needed to bring the power up to the base 6 cyl options of the Europeans, but somehow also make it sporty. While the B58 BMW will still smoke it, I think Acura sits between that and thr GV80 in overall speed. But its the polish that I think Acura really did well. They were surgical in their additions, without going overboard. I do wish they added maybe 50 more HP, to split the difference between the 6cyl and V8 models of the competition. Onto the interior, i agree on the door panels. The tops look like something in my son's Accord Sport. I think there is wayyy too much piano black plastic, and please Acura...add a touchscreen. But there is little to hold at major fault with this Type S. $72K undercuts the fully loaded GV80, and most certainly the Germans(the GLE would still be a 4cyl).
What's going on with the camera work in the last couple of videos? I notice it's been very jerky, especially when zooming in. Not up to your usual quality.

Why are you putting so much importance to 0-60 rating, this is not a race car, who cares if it's a few fractions of a second faster or slower than the competition.
Acura’s first performance SUV may not be a BMW X5 M or even an Audi SQ7 competitor, but it’s $66,700 base price means it’s priced in line with the GV80 3.5T, X5 xDrive40i, GLE450, and Q7 55 TFSI, although it has way more equipment as standard. yeah but then it would of been 10k more. The GV80 fully equipped is 10-12k more. Really Doesnt matter since their awd system is rwd bias now its 60 rwd , 40 fwd . Audi Q7 also does this.
@@georgehugeabutt9947 doubt it gona be 10k more. They could scratch the sh-awd and put a simple sport differential at the back
@@georgehugeabutt9947 the GV80 fully loaded is $70k, the MDX Type S is $73k fully loaded
Absolutely!!
@@challenge1022 you must have never driven sh awd, it's special
I always love your car reviews non judgmental and non bias thank you
You should start adding a small clip when you start explaining the ambient lighting so we could see how it looks at night.
We didn’t get a chance to film it at night. When we get one for the week to test we’ll show the interior ambient light more closely.
Is that a huge swath of piano black on the dash above the glovebox?
This gona age well
It looks so cheap it should have been aluminum.
I like my Acura RDX but I can’t help having a wandering eye. The mpg sucks and I don’t really love the spongey brake 😕 I would consider the Lexus NX but the backseat isn’t as roomy. Any suggestions/recommendations?
Trust me you don’t want the nx 😂. The Rdx is such a better car than the dressed up rav4
Model y
@@sergys8282 but there’s the question of build quality. Now I would hope that’s vastly better
I was just at the dealer today & this same color was there & let me tell ya this is one good looking SUV, now I do think the wheels could be a little better, but for me it doesn't matter because I would do aftermarket wheels anyway like I've done on my 21 TLX type s, & man would I love an air suspension on mine
Trucks have body on frame. This isnt a truck
You CAN view GPS info on the dash. Use the right scroll knob to select the navigation info. If not using navigation, it displays the compass.
Stop zooming in. Also why the camera so shaky? Might have to go back to the old mount.
is mdx manual or automatic?explanation please.
I think it looks stunning I just wish it had a little more power
More power would burn to much fuel. The gas mileage on this SUV is already bad and it uses premium gas which makes it worst.
In terms of reliability, I’d go Acura between these two
2 very good choices.. I too am looking at the the 2 row Jeep in the overland trim with the V8 of course. I’m also looking at the Fisker ocean mid trim model for about 48k after the tax rebate.
@@scoobtay thanks for your feedback. Reliability is a plus, but it’s not at the top of my list. I already know the risks of buying brand new models. I’ve also seen a few videos on TH-cam of this generation MDX having electrical issues, but it’s not a deal breaker. Personally I just want the best SUV for my money.
mdx has a better awd system for the road, jeep has a better 4x4 system for the off roaders
@@XX-166 nice! I also only want the V8 model for a more effortless driving experience.
BOUGHT 2022 MDX couple months ago. I had many issues with it and parts are not available for months now
400 HP is what it needs Acura!
I have a TLX Type S and the fuel economy is horrible, the only real downside to the car and I suspect would be with this MDX Type S. You can drop regular in this as premium is only recommended, which I may have to start doing with the prices lately, almost $1.85/l in Toronto area.
I mean, you are satisfied otherwise, no? How's the power?
@@JTMoodie2 yeah, for sure in all other ways it’s awesome.
@@chrisp1733 about how many miles are you getting per tank would you say?
@@JTMoodie2 at best 280 miles, at worst 240.
Kudos to your passenger for looking so good in that seat LOL.
maybe best in the non-luxury class...but compared to the Germans and Koreans....I don't think so, sorry
@@Moon-Lizard that’s opinion at that point, I think it looks way better then the Koreans and compared to Germans it looks very good!
@@Moon-Lizard the type s is way better than the laughingstock Lexus RX500h
@@naveenthemachine That is the worst argument to debate why the MDX type S isn't a true performance SUV. Both the MDX and RX500 H are laughingstocks if you ask me. theJapanese have lost their way when it comes to performance and enjoyment. In an age of 500HP Kia's Acura and Lexus' best answers so far are some heavy 350HP +/- SUVs....."performance" SUV with similar power to the the non-performance German and Korean SUV....MDXS is NOT a performance SUV....maybe a decade ago it could have been.
@@Moon-Lizard the MDX at least handles way better than the rx. It has a double wishbone front suspension. It has torque vectoring AWD with a strong rear bias. Not to mention it has a large lcd cluster, massaging seats, air suspension, more adjustable seats
The Lexus lacks all of that yet lexus thinks it’s supposed to be luxurious
275 inch wheels?! When are companies gonna stop increasing wheel sizes? Haha love the videos always!
Just got a 2023 MDX Tech fathom blue Tech. Very happy with this product
I use to look at those power figures and zero to sixty times now I'm just looking at those MPG figures lol
Nice looking and a step in the right direction for acura(finally). The low mpg combined with meh power are turnoffs for sure, but overall nice. Also too expensive imo.
yeah this type S is a miss to me....right HP for the RDX, too low for the MDX
@@CPAJayhawk The miss was TLX
@@Jermigggricoooo well that too, it's like the mission statement for the Type S push was, "lets be just ok"
Finally been waiting for this review. Everyone uploaded today! :)
17 MPG premium gas in 2022 and $80K , good job Acura , you nail it 😅
Oof, just as you nailed that English
Seriously not having a Hybrid option shows how out of touch Acura is.
If you can afford an $80k vehicle, you should be able to afford to keep gas in it.
@@D1rtyghetto.L5P By same logic if you can afford 80k car, you can add 10k more and get a German Luxury SUV, why bother with the Acura ? No matter how much of a petrolhead you are, you will get smoked by XC90 hybrid and it will give better MPG. Not very 'Type S'. This car is pretty slow for 'Type S' badge and not efficient enough also......
@@axzhor Good points made. I have no doubt a hybrid would smoke this MDX type S. That would be a good comparison to see since alot of people seem to sleep on Volvo for some reason.
Love this. Am I the only one who found the zooming in and out a bit much?
Correct me if I am wrong, but this appears to only be about 1/4 second quicker 0-60 than your first run in your RDX A Spec Advance, and on the second run, again, only 1/4 second quicker than the 2nd run in your RDX, correct? I understand the vehicle disparity, but to me it was a cash disparity for such minimal performance increase, as I do not need 3 rows. I have measured by RDX at 0-60 in 6.45 seconds (not removing the 1ft rollout, which I presume you do?) going ever so slightly up hill.
If they added a small electric motor with that turbo charged V6, I would be much faster!
It needs the same setup as the MDX Hybrid. I hope they come out with a Sport Hybrid version in the future
They probably will in the future
@@bbbt8090 EXACLTY with a little electric motor, it could be possible to have at least 400hp.
Hopefully in the near future
That'd be good. Also, why doesn't the Honda Pilot have a hybrid powertrain yet? (Same with the Honda Odyssey).
As much as you guys do a good job of the exterior shots etc., the zooming while filming was a bit rough to watch, did you switch up the camera equipment?
1:07 - 1:13 - Did you REALLY, say, the “PLEBEIAN” version??!! Hahahahah!!! 😂 🤣 😂
Can't wait to see what they come up with on the RDX Type S.. GV70 and RDX are my fav SUV as I don't want the 3 row piggys. needless to say the mdx is very nice to drive but didn't like the GV80 as much.
Why didn't you like the GV80 as much? I'm in the market for one (when prices are less crazy)
@@peteranderson5492 handled like a piggy IMO. Really felt the weight unsprung mass in the corners. GV70 and rdx were much better handling cuvs and I don’t need the 3rd row. Our dog would prefer the larger trunk but she could make due in the rdx.
@@aceofspades6667 cool. I don’t think handling will affect me as I live in Florida where there are no corners. My car criteria has completely changed since moving from the UK. I do like the G70 though.
Why you don’t like the GV80
Sofyan, I want to personally Thank You!! Because when a person is used to a unique way of talking, it's hard to change that. I gripped about You usage of the word, "Sequential." You have gotten it correct each and every time after that.. I know this channel, or videos are NOT about how people speak, or to learn to use words correctly. This isn't Sesame Street. But I respect you more for doing so..
Now, with that being said, We are all here because we love your content. Yes, each and every, almost 1 million of us (Hopefully that changes to 1+ million this year). Keep doing what you do, and much success to you, always!!
Great review sofyan as always, the zoom in and zoom out is kinda messing with me tho lol
Great job on your review it's a beautiful SUV with little more power like 400 horses would be nice.
I love acuras and I was really considering purchasing one but these damn gas prices are at $5.15/gal. Now I’m rethinking if I should purchase a Tesla model y instead. After gas prices and maintenance cost model y is making more sense
100%, I had been considering waiting for the seeming guaranteed RDX Type S, but now I'm considering saving the money on purchase price and gas and waiting for the redesigned CRV Hybrid to come out.
Update: I decided to purchase a Model Y 2022 Long Range. I am so excited!
Just got a new 2023 Red Type S, so far very happy with it.
I think fog light is kinda odd location. If that area was all mesh design, it will look more cleaner and nicer look.
Your video seems to be a bit wobbly for the last view videos i see, and the zooming action is a bit rough, i see that you're using iPhone (either 12/13 Pro Max) hope you'll sorted that out next time
Is the Honda Pilot of comparable speed and quality?
The exterior looks great the motor is the best with 3.0l V6 turbo
Acura always made a great automobile to me 👍🏿🚗
im just a little underwhelmed with this whole Type S relaunch. dont get me wrong im thrilled they're making these cars but i just struggle to justify the cost when they get their doors blown off by the competition. I'd just stick with a regular MDX
The competition with a similar feature set, cost more money. The MDX-S is priced fairly for what you get.
Power folding third row seats are overrated. Too heavy, too complicated, and they take way too long.
A perfect review and beautiful location ,thank you
When will Acura come out with all electric or hybrid models
@redlinereviews did you change your photographer ? Things seem a bit off 🤷🏻♂️
Our editor is the same, the camera setup changed and we’re still fine tuning it.
What's going on with the camera work in the last couple of videos? I notice it's been very jerky, especially when zooming in. Not up to your usual quality.
Does the regular MDX have 25 speakers like the type s?
Acura fan loved your review...but jeez man the price! Love my 2013 ZDX and 2008 TL Type-S and want to go back to owning a MDX after getting rid my 2008 MDX but jeez man the price. I don't think I would be satisfied with the standard MDX. Hmm, is it really worth the price especially being the first year out?
Was the transmission issue on the MDX fixed ?
Does this new engine have a chain instead of a belt like the NSX does?
If Acura MDX do Hybrid, I will definitely get it.
The 3rd row is the reason I will choose this one over the Genesis GV series. I can’t wait to test drive it!
Could you tell me the name and where I can get that device you have on the windshield that records the 0-60 times. Thanks. The Fiesta Flash 🤙🏼🍺🍺
Crazy how much 0-60 plays in the minds of car buyers. Vs how the car feels. It’s like we are all buying cars to drag race every day.
The steering wheel is gorgeous. I’m something I would love to grab r Rey day.
Between the GV70 Sport prestige and this Acura which one has the best exhaust note?
This competes with GV80, not GV70. But the Genesis also has a weak sounding exhaust.
Thanks so much for replying
Anyone know that exact spot where the Acura is parked at? Is it a hiking trail
I love the intro music and the intro itself.
I wish I could get a base model with just the type s engine for a 5k upgrade. That'd be sick.
Why are you putting so much importance to 0-60 rating, this is not a race car, who cares if it's a few fractions of a second faster or slower than the competition.
Always bringing value man..keep it up. 👌🏻
Great offering but what is up with those wheel wells?!
A Honda product with a panoramic roof?!? Wow, times have changed... I miss my CL Type S 6SP.
