Thank you for this amazing piece on our beloved HMAS Diamantina. In 2020, we have been marking the ship's contribution to the end of WW2, in which she took two Japanese surrenders onboard her quarterdeck (Nauru and Ocean Island). Check out our new TH-cam channel as we create and upload more content about Diamantina and our other exhibits.
A great feature of Brisbane's 'South Bank', and well worth a visit to our lovely city. I've been to weddings held on the grounds and there are numerous historic displays. Long live the 'Tina' and a big 'well done' to the Queensland Maritime Museum volunteers who maintain this great vessel. (Double Thumbs Up).
Congratulations for producing such interesting and fairly accurate mini-documentaries of ships. It was the Australian ships which attracted my interest having served in the RAN in the 60's. My ship (HMAS Derwent) served alongside the Vampire who you covered and saw all of the same ports and fun. G'day to all you fellow 'Greenies.'
My first draft was HMCS Lauzon; a river class frigate of similar design. these frigates served with the RCN and Lauzon was decommissioned in 1963. after three years in the RCN I transferred to Australia.
I was just down my South Bank today. Had I known Wargaming was releasing a feature on HMAS Diamantina, I may have stopped by the museum and got reacquainted with her.
Naval Legend Video's are truly magnificent, its a great way to remember and preserve History at the same time. Something gamers can be proud of, without us these video's wouldn't be possible, so it feels good that we all can (play) a part in preserving this magnificent piece of history! Ty WG for this special piece of History! Keep them coming!
She looked amazing in the 2011 floods when the river more than burst it's banks and things look pretty grim, except for this ship. She floating hi as she would have in her day not a problem for her. Looking absolutely amazing.
Yep, spoke with a volunteer who said they ran generators in both recent floods to keep the bilges going and slackened off the lines. She sat happy and proud.
I walk past the Diamantina every day, but I wonder for how long will this go on for? Without continued funding, the ship may in fact end up as an artificial reef in the future...
RedtailFox1 The problem is that the land is potentially prime riverside real estate. If the ship was to be sold off, I'm sure the process wouldn't be terribly difficult...
She's not going anywhere, the Commonwealth and State governments are responsible for funding preserved WW2 ships. She's actually in great condition, in the 2011 floods she floated in her drydock fine with no leaks. They just hooked a generator to a bilge pump and she sat happily afloat.
although she did have Navy personnel aboard ready to scuttle her if she posed a threat of breaking loose into the river. She would have been a threat to the bridges. That was what i was told anyway She floated better than the lightship that was undergoing restoration behind her did
as someone who walks by this ship everyday, i could hardly see this ship as a premium unless it was tier one, it does not have torpedo armament and only having two 102mm guns will effect game play as there are no submarines in the game...
HMAS Diamantina is one of only 2 ships remaining that a surrender was signed aboard, the other being the Iowa Class USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor. I would love to see this ship in WoWs but i fear it would be of limited use due to the low number of guns
Very informative. I was intrigued to learn that she was "hororably decommissioned" in a "comfortable" dry dock. Have the Brits ever given a ship a "dishonorable decomission"? Would such a ship then be placed in an uncomfortable dry dock?
nice little bit of history on a ship class we are unlikely to ever see in world of warships unless she's used as the tier 1 ship for an ANZAC line. Which is about the only play we would find her..
I can't believe they called Athenia a cruise liner. It was an ocean liner. It's like calling. Cruiser or aircraft carrier a battleship. Athenia didn't do cruises.
technically, no, she's not the last of her class, as there was a river class purchased after the war and converted to a Yacht... I believe her current name is the "Christina O"
Lazurkri correct. she was the hmcs stormont. there is a 3rd survivor as well. SLNS Gajabahu, formerly HMCS Hallowell (K666) served as a convoy escort during World War II and later transferred to the Israeli Navy and then the Royal Ceylon Navy, which later became the Sri Lankan Navy. She was withdrawn from active duty in 1980 and is now used as a training ship by Sri Lanka.
My father served onboard this frigate in WW2 AS A QUARTERMASTER GUNNER AND JUMPED OFF AND ON FOR THE PEACE AGREEMENT VOYAGE..DAD LEFT HMAS DIAMONTINA IN 1946. MISSING AUDIO TAPE RECORDED OVER VIDEO.
67 -- HMCS (River Class) Frigates -- we could get a Fiji class -- and or a Minotaur for HMCS Quebec and Ontario respectively and as mentioned already Haida, and her sister ships Et. Al.. -- In no way am I trying to take away from His Majesty's Australian Navy -- God Bless them -- but maybe we could be next....
If they put frigates like this in the game (to counter the possible addition of subs as a class) then it would be totally useless against anything else. Two 4" guns aren't enough to properly defend itself against destroyers and at 20 knots it is slower than most battleships. The only way it could work is if this particular ship was tier 2.
Nearly half of the River Class were built by Canadian shipyards. Why doesn't this one have a Hedgehog anti-submarine mortar on display? This was the first class of British warship to carry the Hedgehog as standard equipment. The Hedgehog could be quite effective against Japanese submarines as demonstrated by the exploits of USS England.
...Because someone from England should really be expected to know the origin of the name of an Australian river, right? That's not our job. Our job is to sail up to your country, stick a Union Jack in it and say "I claim this land in the name of Queen Elizabeth II." Seriously, get with the times.
No countries have been claimed under QEII primarily because there aren't any countries left to claim; they all belong to other people. And the fact that a river isn't in a specific part of Australia really means that HMAS Diamantina was named after a Brazilian mountain, doesn't it? Besides, when I Googled "Diamantina River" and saw "The Diamantina River is a major river located in Central West Queensland and the far north of South Australia," I naturally assumed that at least part of this river went through an area called "South Australia." Is that not correct?
Neovolt: As there is no need for depth charges, I'd say that to include frigates or corvettes you'd have to give them, a mine-laying capability and make them extremely stealthy.
She still floats too. The dry dock got flooded in the 2011 floods. The frigate floated off nicely and the light ship behind her filled up and sank. th-cam.com/video/RzM3AMLUZS0/w-d-xo.html
Why Don't You Make A Naval Fortress Piece About Battery Pennsylvania And Battery Arizona (The Two Shore Defense Batteries That "Recycled" Two Of The Turrets,-And Their Guns,-Taken From The Wreck Of The U.S.S. Arizona.) That Became Operational At The Same Time The Japanese Surrendered?
yes, metric measurements like the entire world (except for America) use. At last check the USA, Burma and some other 3rd world hellhole still used the imperial system, but both Burma and that other country switched in the last few years to Metric. It is a superior measurement system. Easy to understand and more precise

I'm glad u did this ship. Whilst it didn't sink loads of ships, it was a very important boat of an important class
A great feature of Brisbane's 'South Bank', and well worth a visit to our lovely city. I've been to weddings held on the grounds and there are numerous historic displays. These are great episodes describing a fascinating history. Thank you War Gaming for your effort and support for these treasures.
I used to drive past her everyday...never realized how special she was.

NEW NAVAL LEGENDS YEEEEEEEZSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
happy birthday!
Relax dude
My country ! I have actually been to this museum.
Good of you and your country to preserve this piece of history! Would love to visit if I ever visit Queensland.
ill be there this weekend!
Taylor Eddy me too
I had a fashion/bikini show happening on the back of it when i was there
Likewise! Gorgeous little ship! :D
My first draft was HMCS Lauzon; a river class frigate of similar design. these frigates served with the RCN and Lauzon was decommissioned in 1963. after three years in the RCN I transferred to Australia.
Good to see my home city with this wonderful ship featured
I was just down my South Bank today. Had I known Wargaming was releasing a feature on HMAS Diamantina, I may have stopped by the museum and got reacquainted with her.
Love seeing n hearing about these Naval legends, thanks WG.

Atlast Naval Legends...I've been waiting for this for a long time
Awwww yeah. Really, truly love this series.
Such high quality content, thank you.
Nicely done, I have walking through this vessel more than once.
YAY! MORE AUSTRALIA!
Awesome documentary as always! Keep them coming. :)
I enjoy your programs!
The one about the USS Batfish especially; as it now resides 50 miles from me.
in the 1970s i had the pleasure to board the tina for a visit in fremantle it was a fine ship thank you jo fenner
You blokes should do HMAS Castlemaine in Melbourne, a WWII Corvette/Minesweeper.
Man that ww2 veteran speaking touch my Heart
She looked amazing in the 2011 floods when the river more than burst it's banks and things look pretty grim, except for this ship. She floating hi as she would have in her day not a problem for her. Looking absolutely amazing.
Yep, spoke with a volunteer who said they ran generators in both recent floods to keep the bilges going and slackened off the lines. She sat happy and proud.
Electric torps were undetectable, the steam-powered ones gave the giveaway bubbles, but at night, good luck seeing them....
Small point, in WW2, the British used ASDIC rather than SONAR.
Loving these Australian ships. Keep it up
I walk past the Diamantina every day, but I wonder for how long will this go on for? Without continued funding, the ship may in fact end up as an artificial reef in the future...
got to get it out of the drydock first, which is sealed. the date of the drydock has been replaced by concrete wall.
RedtailFox1 The problem is that the land is potentially prime riverside real estate. If the ship was to be sold off, I'm sure the process wouldn't be terribly difficult...
Dan Hay Yeah all WWII ships are protected due to historical significance
She's not going anywhere, the Commonwealth and State governments are responsible for funding preserved WW2 ships. She's actually in great condition, in the 2011 floods she floated in her drydock fine with no leaks. They just hooked a generator to a bilge pump and she sat happily afloat.

I live only 20 mins away from that frigate and have been on it. Must of been filmed during mariners week at the museum.
excellent and informative documentary like always, good job WG (y)

Until submarines come into WoWS this ship is pretty much a downgraded DD with no torpedoes.
Yeah
nice ,like all of your Naval Legends videos !! :)
I love Australia
This should've been posted on the 25th of April
Finally got to see the hedgehog weapon. My dad's flower class corvette HMCS Cobalt had one.
Diamantina looks like she could be a Tier I for the 'Commonwealth' Tech tree.
New ship nation confirmed? YES?
HMAS Perth is already in game.
Drew Hayes In the British tree. They could still add a separate "Commonwealth" tree, with ships from Australia, Canada etc.
Not really, the Australian Navy will be apart of the "Commonwealth" tech tree in the game
Drew Hayes RAN boo yeah!
Just like perth.
Hedgehogs only exploded on contact with a subs hull. An exploding hedgehog was a sure kill.
Very informative. I was intrigued to learn that she was "hororably decommissioned" in a "comfortable" dry dock. Have the Brits ever given a ship a "dishonorable decomission"? Would such a ship then be placed in an uncomfortable dry dock?
Brits? It's an Australian ship in Australia...
HMCS Haida maybe?
Divine Dino I live really close to that ship. Hopefully they will make a video of her! :D
Divine Dino Then RCN is wholly under represented... The major role we played and nary a mention.
don't forget HMCS Sackville (k181) the last surviving Flower-class corvette
I've been on her
Amazingly small vessel
completely agree HMCS Sackville and Haida for naval legends, and fortresses could include Fort rodd hill
are they going to add subs to the game?
Jarid Gaming yes they’ve added them just over a year ago
In '67 she was in Freemantle, she was so rusty they drove a chipping hammer through her deck.
It's surprisingly big inside that ship.
Hahaha i literally live 10 minutes from there. I’ve been there, pretty nice ship.
what is the difference size betweeen hmas castlemaine and hmas diamantina
Diamantina is about twice the tonnage.
two different classes of ships. Castlemaine is corvette and diamantina a frigate.
nice little bit of history on a ship class we are unlikely to ever see in world of warships unless she's used as the tier 1 ship for an ANZAC line. Which is about the only play we would find her..
HMS Warspite deserves a Navel legends videos.. Maybe WoW doesn't want to make every other "legend" look bad
I live close to that ship :D
Thats a fearsome armamant!
great video 👍🇦🇺
Very interesting video about this class ship. Kinda wish depth charges were in the game though. :(
you guys should go see HMCS Sackville and HMCS Haida in canada, and the naval fortress at Fort Rodd Hill BC Canada
I can't believe they called Athenia a cruise liner. It was an ocean liner. It's like calling. Cruiser or aircraft carrier a battleship. Athenia didn't do cruises.

I wish more Aussie warships got models, I'd love this ship in 1/350 scale
Y'all should do the USS Lexington CV-16 "The Blue Ghost" the Japanese called her.
In Halifax Nova Scotia theres another nice frigate on display.
Actually Radio direction finders were as important as Radar .
HMCS Sackville is a museum ship if I remember correctly.
I was one of the creu that ricomisioned the diamontina in 1959 in sydney
Cute. Great documentary as always.
I hope that you add the motor torpedo boats, in the future.
Can we get u505 the only us captured u boat?
Isn’t there another River class in Egypt?
Well done...
What were river ships doing on the North Atlantic Ocean?
They are not river ships they are River class ships, that means they were named after rivers. Diamantina, Calgoa, Murchison,Napean. Condamine etc.
My father served onboard this frigate in WW2 AS A QUARTERMASTER GUNNER AND JUMPED OFF AND ON FOR THE PEACE AGREEMENT VOYAGE..DAD LEFT HMAS DIAMONTINA IN 1946. MISSING AUDIO TAPE RECORDED OVER VIDEO.
What about HMAS Perth. (or have I just not seen it
Tier II premium? I feel if at tier III her AA would be too dangerous for carriers.
Maybye you could do HMCS sackville
Do S.S. Lane Victory please!
67 -- HMCS (River Class) Frigates -- we could get a Fiji class -- and or a Minotaur for HMCS Quebec and Ontario respectively and as mentioned already Haida, and her sister ships Et. 15:40 anyone spot the face?
can you make this a tier 1 or 2 premium?
Bismarck when?
Did you know that the last time she floated was in 2011
LoL, we have in Brazil a Mountain called Chapada Diamantina, coincidence?
Luis Felipe Moura Silva Yes, actually. HMAS Diamantina was named after a river in southern Australia.
Which was in turn named after Lady Diamantina, the Qld Governors wife.
...Because someone from England should really be expected to know the origin of the name of an Australian river, right? That's not our job. Our job is to sail up to your country, stick a Union Jack in it and say "I claim this land in the name of Queen Elizabeth II." Seriously, get with the times.

I wish the Perth didn’t sink and it became a museum
I saw HMAS Dementia in the title at first...
What the hell happened to the geography at 2:16? 😂
ayyyy, it's Southbank
HMS M33? Maybe
remind me of the movie greyhound
does this mean a Diamantina in game? hopefully?
A shame, I look forward to more Australian ships, the Perth is a fun ship to play.

Come on guys, it's sitting in corpus Chisti, Texas waiting for you. The CV-16 U.S.S. Lexington, Blue ghost. Please do a video on it.

Maybe HS Averof?

Liberia I think.
a ship made for countering subs... so subs in wow?
New premium ship???
Two four inch guns - Tier 0? 😂
Nick Schmidt I could imagine it as a tier 1. Just make those depth charge launchers into de facto 1000mm guns!
HMCS Haida!!! PLEASE HMCS HAIDA!!!!!!!!!!!!
It looks like a good warship for her purpose, but it's too slow!
Transports were even slower. In other words, she didn't need blistering speed, only range and effective ways of engagement.
Brswing This is also true...
