Man, it really trudges. Even all these years on, you get that sense of fatigue which had set in. But the annoying thing is, there were still traces of the old Brookie magic here and there which could have been fleshed out and helped to revive the show. One of the most underrated aspect of the dying days of Brookside was the Jimmy Corkhill / Nicki Shadwick relationship. That was a really interesting storyline, which developed slowly and naturally in a way that was very reminiscent of the show's peak. Let's not kid ourselves that it wasn't a desperate invention by the writers to fuse together two characters otherwise stranded by the loss of cast who originally supported them as family members. But it worked. Nicki with emotional problems caused by the ra** story and the death of close family, and Jimmy with serious mental health issues and loss of his family through both death and desertion. They were an odd pairing, but a very powerful one for the show. The way in which they were both strong for each other and weak for themselves was a nugget of gold for long term viewers who had stuck with it by this point. Similarly, the odd-couple pairing of Max and Jacqui was surprisingly good. We never got to see the full potential there, as the show was cancelled before any big storyline could emerge. But despite the possibly dubious age gap, they made a natural couple. And we also had the legendary Ron and Bev reunited. Sorry to say though, the other characters were driftwood. I'm not criticising the actors, just the characters. But the three most underused characters by this point were Katie, Mike, and Rachel. Great actors, long established characters. Yet just drifted around without tapping in to their potential as long serving cast who could have delivered much bigger performances with the right scripts. The turnaround of Brookside's demise was always so close, yet ultimately so far.
Great points. I’m still enjoyjng the 2002 episodes though the show hasn’t been great since 2001. Tinhead and Emily were also a good match for the show. Jerome was a good character but since he recovered from the fire, his character has just been drifting about. I think it would have been better if the writers had killed off the character in the fire.
Maybe this is me being stupid or iv missed something here but how is rons a bigger house than Max's? they the same size house , only difference is Ron had his front room knocked through to the kitchen 🤔
Their house expanded internally and gained Tardis like dimensions after Ron fired the gun that night, don't ask how or why it was just the writer's decision.
I must be honest, I think Nisha was out of order ripping Katie's photo up. I understand why though. I still wish Brookside was in air because it was more realistic.
the doc and his missus are such boring characters, I think Max, Patricia and Susannah have been the only decent posh characters in it, the rest don't blend well at all like that handsome but boring Dr Darren and Victoria or Jacqui's fiance, rubbish cast

Episode 2682, I still have this on vhs somewhere
Unlike many people, I still enjoyed the show from 1999-2001. But by this point, even I thought it had become pretty dull.
Same here. In 2002 started to go down hill. Especially 2003
Another one that can’t escape! nisha strikes again 😂
I liked the last Josh better. He reminded me of a mini Lance. Can't stand this one's shouting 🙉
Even by Brookside standards, the reveal behind the not-very-interesting Parr marriage took ages!

Katie Rogers is sooooo boring.
Looking Back (8th May 2002)
Self-Awareness (9th May 2002)
Mixed Signals (10th May 2002)
Another Go (15th May 2002)
Pain Killers (16th May 2002)
Never seen a fictional character that makes me cringe so much like Ron 😡😡😡
