Personally, I think the uncut nature of the playthrough was really nostalgic and effective. It reminded me a lot of sitting at my sister's feet while she'd play edutament and internet games. I really enjoyed it! :D

To answer your question about what happens if you ban everyone: you can't. Only two people can be banned (because they're the ones who violate the rules). Everyone is doomed to die by not breaking ToS. The moral of the story: always break ToS.

    • @SamFishback
      @SamFishback 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

No no, that's false. In piratesoftware's playthrough he saved 5, which I think is the max.

@@SamFishback You can only save 2 people it's been confirmed. There aren't even any cutscenes for saving more than 2 people (tho an unused cutscene for saving 3 people is in the game data)

It's always fun to see everyone's reactions to Hypnospace Outlaw, it's such a charming game.
Actually, there's only two people you can save from the Mindcrash, Zane and Carl. The rest haven't racked up enough violations for a ban(if they had any to begin with). The Mindcrash will always claim Tiff, Rodney, Roddy and Mavis.
I hope you end up playing Dreamsettler, whenever that comes out! That's the next game Hypnospace's devs are working on. Supposed to be a similar game, except you're a private investigator rather than a rules enforcer.

John, you're way too hard on yourself. My husband and I really enjoyed watching your play through of Hypnospace. In fact, I PERSONALLY would much rather watch this-or games like this-than BG3 (a game I'm playing, so I have no reason to watch a play through). Don't worry about it seeming slow, etc. It's great! ❤

I know this was based on the 90s but this game feels exactly like tumblr circa the 4chan-wars era as well, with the hacking and the interpersonal/staff drama... truly unmatched. I remember spending HOURS making my page's music playlist for like 4 followers lmao

This was a genuinely fun let's play, I loved the wacky songs, the engaging story, and John's great commentary (the Squisherz bit was definitely the best).
I was born in 1999, so I don't have quite the same nostalgia for this era of the internet, but it was still very interesting. I kind of loved the aesthetic too, so colorful and stimulating haha 😂

I put off watching this for as long as I could. Another great Twolfe series ended! I don't think of these as "throwaway culture" at all (RE: that phrase being used in previous videos); I can easily predict myself re-watching this/these down the line. This game experience was especially a lot of fun; reminded me of exploring the real web with a sibling, and also of when I "designed" forums back in the day.
And in response to some comments below: Personally, I don't mind guides being used during a game *IIIIF* that's what preserves the enjoyability of the game for the person playing it.
But otherwise? Yes, IF it's a decision based on audience pressure/perceived impatience, then I'd like to express that this channel doesn't strike me as the best channel for impatient people (the type that insists upon notifying everyone in proximity that they were "screaming at their screens")...
Maybe those people _need_ to relieve us of their burdensome presence, lol. Seriously, there's enough 1k-miles-per-minute Let's Plays out there.
But! - I suspect it's more that being stuck in a game simply isn't fun for the LPer, and, judging from the loopdiloop logic this game used for some of the investigation work (ex: feeding the eye to the pet), it's pretty necessary sometimes. I don't know. Unspoken viewer consensus/consideration of the viewer experience is maybe a tough line to walk for John but he ought to be twusted (typo'd there but it's funny so I'm leaving it) to gauge these aspects of content creation himself. I'm only saying something out loud because I'd hate for the chill no-stress channel to, in fact, start to feel like the opposite.
Anyway, nobody readin all this but. BELOW ARE SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!! for the game/video ending
    spooooooooooooilerrrrs
    ....
    ......
I like that Dylan finally confesses. I feel like it would've been far too easy to write him as a cliche corporate scumbag with a total absence of scruples or compassion, like every comparable character out there. (He's certainly not a wonderful person, of course, hiding the truth all those years, but hey - the game required that in order to exist.)
Because of that (slightly anti-climatic) confession, he came across as a far more interesting character than I would've ever expected. Still not sure of his motives, especially with that bizarre Outlaw "dedication" which, for a reason I can't identify, felt... depraved and unsettling? I can't tell if that particular source of horror was intentional or not, but the part about being found hooked up to a stupid, trendy internet machine, just - gone? That's pretty haunting. Can't imagine what that'd be like for Zane's parents, or any of the families. Did they short-circuit, or did they have massive aneurysms and violet seizures? Damn - either way, "brain fry" always been a spooky concept to me in these sci-fi stories, but because this was more "grounded" than, say, Observer, it felt even more awful.

  • @Emily-xk2du
    @Emily-xk2du 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

OHHH, Mavis was the lady pooh-poohing Beefbrain! The name sounded familiar when John was looking at her page and I wondered if it was her, then the ending came around and yup! Lol I gotta admit when I realized Dylan had finished the game and wanted to play it as a sort of graceful loser gesture with tributes to the people who died, I was like "aww, that's kinda sw-" (John) "That's pretty fucked up, Dylan." "........ YEAH IT IS ACTUALLY." The gesture would've been nice if Dylan hadn't actively covered up six people's deaths and let an innocent teen take the fall and suffer for years in jail for something he didn't do. .... And if the notes to some of the victim weren't kinda mean (YOUR FAMILY WAS REALLY REALLY SMELLY. LIKE REALLY SMELLY. sorry tho. ZANE MAYBE ONE DAY YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE DISAPPOINTED YOUR MOTHER EVERY DAY OF UR LIFE. That all you gotta say for frying their brains to death, Dylan?! Shouldn't Tim get his own apology note???)
What a cool little game! Music is awesome of course, it nailed the era it was going for, and the humor was great, but it also took a lot of fun turns I didn't expect, the suspense was excellent (Dylan banning you originally and then getting invited back without his permission, then him joining the team and sending emails that made it feel like just a matter of time until he realized what you and Samantha were doing), and some of the solutions were really cool! Definitely don't blame you for getting tips on how to progress, some of this stuff I never would've thought of to do. I'm glad it didn't go in the direction I started worrying it would, when Sam was collecting evidence - since she was in some of the chatlogs I was worried she was complicit and trying to trick you into collecting evidence so she could destroy it, but that would've been a terrible plan since no one seemed to suspect anything before that lol.

dylan's game with the ascending thing made me sad, i forgot this was a game for a sec. because we spent a lot of time with the pages it really felt like we knew those people personally. i guess that's the charm of the game. loved all the music and everything as well. also the things you talked about having pages and making comics really reminds me of how i made comics too (though i don't think i ever finished them) i'd show them to my classmates, and i was so into blogging then i'd even take requests to decorate people's blogs for them. what a trip down memory lane. it was nice hearing tidbits about your teen years. this was a good series, thank you for playing it, john! looking forward to any one shots you do and alone in the dark, i searched it up after your mention and it looks interesting! :)

It's fun to see the different players play differently. For instance, I've seen three ways to get the antivirus, break into leaky pipes, and get the all seeing eyes. The best part is, I don't feel like one way is any more "efficient" than the next but it shows a player's thinking in what rabbit hole they dig into.

It's such a genuine bummer that John never made it into m1nx, there's SO much lore in there, particularly with regards to Tim and Dylan.
It also has my favorite twist in the game...Counselor Ronnie is FAKE, he's a made up guy made by the same dude who spread the Beef Brain meme and Dylan LETS IT SLIDE because he thinks it's funny.
There's also just something so deviously funny and wild about Dylan's final confession email ending with "Sent from my D-Phone".
    Really enjoyed the playthrough!

This was a great game! I was very invested in learning about the early internet from John and the Spinechill crew! I wasn't expecting such a somber ending though-genuinely sad that so many characters died and Dylan just let Tim rot in jail for his crime. Even only really knowing the mid-2000s in terms of earlier Internet stuff, if it can even be called that by that point, this was an extremely endearing and resonating game by all rights. I know you did it so the gameplay is more dynamic and easy to watch but I feel like the point of this channel is to see you do the full thing even if it takes you a little longer. Sometimes you cut to the part where you got it and I think that's alright too. I like to imagine Sam saw you close those old cases in the last ep and was so confused by it. If you started going around flagging things again she might legit think your brain broke from the headband!

I love Linkin park! And me and my friends also made people up lol. I hope you check out the Zane game. Thank you so much for this play through again! I bought the game and I’m so glad to have discovered this. I love nostalgia old internet stuff. And I thought that about Dylan as well that him putting the victims into his game was kinda creepy so I’m glad I’m not alone lol.

Great playthrough. I like watching different people play this game because everyone seems to get something different out of it, or focus on different things. Like for example, you're the first person I've seen actually finish the drug runners game.
And re: Dylan, I hate how even in his 'apology' at the end, he had to shoehorn in his terrible car game. He comes off as so insincere, even though I think he was genuinely trying to do good, but that's what I like about this game. Everyone will get something different out of their playthrough.

this game is so good but also so difficult with the puzzles. i really enjoyed the playthrough! ur glee at the squisherz was super silly and fun. zane would definitely have thought critically hehe.
also side topic, keep bugging the neoepets team about your account. it really depends on which team member you get, if u can manage to escelate it to anyone other than alice you might have a fighting chance. i just got into my 19 year old account after like 15 years lol.

Myspace!! Was similar to the retro profiles... i cant remember my myspace URL, only the email i logged in with...and you cant see your page with only rhe email. The website seems yo be taken over by a group of hackers now or something because it is highly dysfunctional. Good times though (:
