Howard Keel comes to town to find himself a wife, in the 1954 Stanley Donen musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Music by Gene de Paul, lyrics by Johnny Mercer.
Howard Keel had a unique gift: he could burst into song like it was the most natural thing in the world, and it never seemed corny or fake. He just seemed to have an ocean of music in him, and it would come rolling out two or three times a movie.
True! Just walkin' down the street, totally natural: nothing showy or fake. His voice lifts my spirits! Always loved his movies on TV . I think I may have even seen him in summer stock but I'm not sure. My grandmother would take me to anything that was around. I loved it but SO took for granted that we could see the great stars of the golden era live on stage! Good times! Howard Keel made it look easy and I think there will never be anyone better for this type of role!
and most importantly when he finally came full circle and had to re-examine his own behavior after becoming a father "if someone else had kidnapped her like a thieving fox, I'd string him up!"
I love that right at the end he is not turned off by her shoving that guy to the floor. He loves the fact that she is sparky, independent and fierce, not intimidated by it, and it’s something that, for all Adam’s major flaws, he never tries to quash or change.

@@tonytran07watch the movie again and see how feminist it is. Adam marries Millie thinking she will be a pretty little housekeeper. Instead, she orders him around, domesticates his brothers, teaches them manners and rules that roost like her kingdom. When the boys kidnap the girls, Millie banishes them from their own home and it’s the girls who ultimately decide their own destiny - by all of them claiming Millie’s baby as their own they force their fathers to put aside macho revenge and agree to marry their daughters to the brothers. Not to mention Adam’s journey from seeing women as props to finally learning to respect them.
I'll bet feminists just love movies like this. Especially the part when he asks millie to marry him and she replies," Well I'll have to finish my chores first". Lol
I love this movie, I know it shows so many things that younger generations would totally disapprove (and even cancel) but I couldn't care less. I love it!
But that can change once they watch the full movie and see the growth of all the brothers. Such a good lesson for all backgrounds! The younger generations disapproving the movie kinda shows the point.
I'm part of the younger generation and I love this movie!! The plot, the score, the singing, the acting, I honestly think this is one of the best musicals out there. Especially compared to the garbage coming out these days 🙄. We're not *all* without taste 😉
I'm 50 and was born 11 years after this film debuted in theatres. I first watched it in the mid-70's as a teenager on one of those late night Saturday classics shows. It is gratifying to know so many newer generations of teenagers still go for this film! I must say-we ALL have great taste! RIP Howard Keel/Adam. A handsome man with a beautiful soul and a beautiful voice.
When I was in high school, I played Adam in the High School Musical. It was SOOO fun. Even though there were parts of the musical I enjoyed more, singing THIS song is what I became known for. Everyone who saw me in school, or in my town for that matter, EVERY TIME, would say "HEY! Bless your beautiful HIIIDE!!" However, my voice was, or is, no match for Howard. Hell, they had to move the key up so it was in a Tenor's range for me. This guy's voice was EPIC!
I love that this musical wasn't afraid to paint people by their flaws. Adam was sexist and chauvinistic and thought he could window shop for a wife. He was also not wildly smart, as he misinterpreted Plutarch's history of the Sabine women as teaching and led his brothers to kidnap six women. And because it's all done in song and cheer, people today see it as celebrating their deeds, when in reality it's highlighting their flaws. See everyone around Adam reacting the way we might to such an entitled 'backwoodsman' from 'bear country'. The woman in the shop isn't afraid to tell him he can't just shop for a wife. The girls he eyes up who come in for quilt pieces are embarrassed and want nothing to do with him. The song isn't trying to show that this is HOW we should search for a partner, but rather how Adam DID, and the rest of the movie shows the calamitous stupidity of him and his brothers (and somehow that they can still win the hearts of those they've fallen for, because the movie is wildly optimistic to boot.) Today in any blockbuster, the protagonists are made to be flawless and cool. These seven brothers were all idiots. And I love every one of them.
thats actually way too much sense and people would rather just take it at face value without deep thought on why these characters are portraying those traits. the thought goes as deep as well every man was like that back then :)
People don't like to have to think and deduce morals anymore, nor do they like complex/redeemable characters. It's almost all about artifice, "representing" something as simply existent and either completely bad or completely good.

Milly is one of the most inspirational women of my life. If only we were all a little more like Milly, what a 'Wonderful, Wonderful, Day' that would be. ♥
I understand why people complain about the politics of the show, but I also argue that at least Milly has more strength of character and agency than Christine in ‘Phantom of the Opera’ - she refuses to back down or to admit defeat she stands her ground and goes on with life no matter what it throws her and declares her power and position in that house

I love Adam’s growth. He had a lot to learn about what it means to be a husband and to cherish his wife as opposed to just living with her.
We all think we're a catch 😉😅😅
I agree! It was great to see his character change and grow to something better than where it started.

My favorite old time classic
I like how this guy is basically the western version of Gaston
I saw this movie when I was about 6 years old, and fell head over heels in love with Howard Keel!
2:15 if you came here for the actual song.

My mom showed me this movie when I was about 4 or 5. Been mine and her favorite ever since. I realize most 16 year don't like musicals. Haha I don't care! Love them! :)
