Barn Raising Dance (7 Brides for 7 Brothers) - MGM Studio Orchestra (HD)

  • The screenplay, by Albert Hackett, Frances Goodrich, and Dorothy Kingsley, is based on the short story "The Sobbin' Women", by Stephen Vincent Benét,.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which is based in Oregon in 1850, is particularly known for the unusual choreography by Michael Kidd, which makes dance numbers out of such mundane frontier pursuits as chopping wood and raising a barn
To perform the electrifying dance numbers and grueling action sequences, choreographer Michael Kidd wanted dancers to portray all six of Adam Pontipee's rough and tumble brothers. MGM Studios, however, wanted actors already under contract to MGM - Jeff Richards (a former baseball player), and Russ Tamblyn (a gymnast) - to be cast as two of the brothers. The other four brothers were portrayed by professional dancers - Matt Mattox, Marc Platt, Tommy Rall, and Jacques d'Amboise. All four balanced on a beam together during their famous barn-raising dance.
The movie was listed as number 464 in Empire magazine's list of the 500 greatest films of all time.
Oscar nominee for Best Picture in 1954, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers won NBR Award Top Ten Films (1954), Oscar for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture and WGA Award for Best Written American Musical among others.

Had dinner with Jacques D'Amboise a few months ago and discussed this sequence throughout the evening. Much to tell but one of the challenges was dealing with the edits and pauses that required the cameras to be reset and then the dancers going back into the dynamic rythm and pacing they had just left. Russ was discovered in a bit role in a teen drama and kept the crew entertained with his gymnastics. Each of the dancers was ballet experienced and the set was cardboard and lumber... note the dirt that was spread to kick up when then slid beneath the sawhorse. Also notice how flexible the dance floor was. It was set like a trampoline and sent the leaps and jumps sky high. Few of the stunts had to be reshot many times. The issue was never falling... it was balance and breaking character to stay on the rolling or balancing "beams'. Hitting their marks was the big challenge... sliding, leaping, spinning ... all together left some short or others way off their mark. And one false move and collisions spread like wildfire. More later....

This scene was the cause of one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in many years of movie-going. During one of its many re-releases, the movie was playing at the small theater in my neighborhood. In spite of it being a week night, the place was packed, and I'll never forget that when this scene ended, the entire audience (remember this was a MOVIE theater) burst into uproarious cheers and spontaneous applause! So much so that they had to stop projecting and turn on the lights until the delighted audience's enthusiasm subsided. I've never seen anything like that before or since.

Brought here by the sad news that Jacques d'Amboise died just the other day, after having a stroke. That leaves only Russ Tamblyn as the last brother alive. I know Marc Platt (the original Dream Curly in OKLAHOMA, by the way) lived to be at least 100, but died a few years ago, and my big crush, Tommy Rall, just an amazing talent, died in 2020, apparently. Matt Mattox became a greatly influential dance educator, and had a good long life. I love these guys, and Michael Kidd, for creating such magic.

This Mr Michael Kidd's swiveling, gamboling, and tumbling step designs - that were gaudily and giddily integrated into the ballet steps, the acrobatic hurdles, and the Western Polka - were definitely astonishing, smashing, and distinguishing. It's not that easy to master all the difficult steps. But still the entire cast particularly the male dancers had apparently succeeded to dance in perfect timing and unison and to exhibit their jauntiness, sturdiness, handiness, vividness, and exactness in this dance sequence. This musical segment in 1954 MGM's Seven Brides for Seven Brothers can be hailed as one of the all-time first-rate and larger-than-life dance routines ever choreographed and ever performed on silver screen. It's truly-epic in scope.

Tommy Rall (in the red shirt) was one of the all-time great Hollywood dancers. He never got enough good roles, though. He was about 24 when this was filmed, and I'm happy to report that as of May, 2020, he is still with us, at age 90! As to why he never became really famous, back in 1988, Gene Kelly was asked what he thought about other dancers. "The best all-around dancer we had over at MGM was Tommy Rall." he said. "He could do anything and do it better than any other dancer." But, sadly, the public didn’t buy him. Gene cast Rall as the Sharpie in the "Ring around the Rosy" section of Invitation to the Dance. Kelly used to say that it was the public who decided that someone - would or would not - be a star. He said, "the public dictates." And some performers who Gene thought were the best, the public didn’t accept as romantic leads and, therefore, they were not cast in those roles. Vera Ellen and Eleanor Powell were two women Gene said fell into this category and Tommy Rall one of the men. Another factor is that musicals were a tough sell in the 1950s. Rall was more successful in stage roles.

    • @yooneeque1

I agree :) I know Russ was an acrobat, and I don't think he was classically trained in ballet, but he has done quite a bit of tap- and modern-dancing in movies throughout the years. I wonder if he ever took formal lessons, or if he improvised.

RIP Jane Powell. 🙏

being human means having feelings--too many men live by a very detrimental old idea of macho or bullying tough manhood that is damaging to them and people around them.
