    These are super cool! They’re more subtle and maybe also a little more dodgy-looking than some other paints, but compared to things like....colors of nature, the color range is more interesting. When I was making paints, I also had a window garden and an excess of herbs and foliage. I actually dried some of the cuttings I made with the intention o my grinding them into pigments to see if they could be used for paint-I’m kind of glad to see that it’s not an impossible or entirely strange idea! And that, for the most part, it works!

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You sound like someone who didn't quite like the Colors of Nature paints XD
      I think there's a whole extraction process to end up with pigment and not plant dust, but that's just me guessing. The pictures on the Lutea site are very interesting in regards to the process.

    Great video Eve! 😁 YAY! You got them in the mail. I know how excited & happy you were waiting for them. They do look like wonderful paints. I love that violet. I can't wait to see what else you paint with them. They do look like the work better straight out of the tubes. Thanks for sharing! 🤗 Oh I really liked your inked flower painting. So beautiful colours, and your paintings are also so very beautiful! Love the flowers. So wonderful paints, made of plants. Sustainable and environment friendly. I wish I could purchase these, but not the cochineal one. But oh, the price...not for a student. Maybe later some time. I love the idea of painting with plants. The minerals will be gone, but the plants will grow again. Oh, some years ago I got some watercolours (for children), made of plants. The brand is Ökonorm from Germany. Very interesting to paint with, but they are probably not lightfast at all, maybe only the black one made of charcoal. I bought them only for fun, and they are not toxic, very children friendly. I am so curious about the Lutea paints. I read about them some time ago. Thank you for making this review and demo! : ) Please paint more with them and show us! That would be great.

    oo I've seen these. I really like the paintings you did and love the look of that violet colour. However some of the other ones look a little bland and washed out. I think the idea behind them is amazing and from a paint makers perspective fascinating! They do some crazy science stuff to extract the colour. Cochineal is used to make red food dye so not sure how lightfast it is.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is really fascinating, isn't it? I know I kept staring at all the process pictures, trying to understand what is going on! It's different enough from mineral and synthetic pigments to be very intriguing. Their tests rank the paints as having a Good or Very Good lightfastness. I would still take extra precautions but they don't label these as fugitive either. I'll see about making a lightfastness test of the colors :)

    Awesome demo paintings. Like that u used lineart for second one! Love the idea behind these paints. But I feel like I would really need to think though the Color relationships just to make them stand out. I not sure which value can they provide upon laying? Would be interesting to see that in next demo or review if u’re planning on it!

    I wish, I've studied and practiced plant dying fabrics but eventually I got frustrated because nothing would dye to bamboo or even linen (mostly cochineal, maybe a bad batch). Indigo worked beautifully but i would like to make a properly fermented batch one day when I have space. or actually be able to grow the plants (I have seeds going to waste) so I can make my own paints which was the plan. *sigh* I love the paintings you made they seem accurate for dreamy paints that remind you of history and 'old ways'. might try and ask for like a tube each birthday lol.

    • @EveBolt

  • @Donna_G
    @Donna_G 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It seems like these paints are nice enough for the little paintings that you created. I like colors with a bit more vibrancy. It is possible to create water without having any blue on your palette. Because our ponds are surrounded by mostly evergreen trees and other plant life, these little bodies of water tend to look more green than blue. However, if the mini farm not to far from us has a good size pond near the barn, then the water tends to look red if the barn is a red color. About the only time any of the ponds appear blue is on a bright, sunny, cloudless day. Of course, when wildfire season starts up, our valley can easily get covered with smoke. Then the sky is grey/orange color.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Water is basically like a mirror, depending on the light. You're right that blue is definitely not mandatory for water. Neither is it for skies, actually. Maybe I should've said that it'd be hard to paint blueberries without the blue paint, hehe :)
      Have you noticed if the water surface looks grey/orange when the air gets smoky? I would think so, but it's worth asking.

  • @grayblosser6630
    @grayblosser6630 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Being (mostly) plant based, I wanted to love these so much! But I don't. Your paintings were beautiful and I think you really showed the best of the paints. Made me love them for the couple of minutes because of what you did with them... but there's just something off about them for me though. Maybe it's the lack of vibrancy or that they're super expensive? Maybe it's that the line is mainly yellows and reds. I'm a sucker for a good blue and that's hard to find in nature. Looking at the site I'm not too impressed with the indigo.

    • @arestocat
      @arestocat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100% agree.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm glad I was able to make you love the paints through my sketches, even if only for a moment. :) They are definitely not for everyone, as they are indeed not bright and the color range is fairly limited by the plants in nature. On the flipside, that means there's one less tempting products out there for you ;)

    • @EugeniaLoli
      @EugeniaLoli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can't do many blues or purples from plants. They oxidize, so you can only get reds, yellows and browns. The blue and purple they have there are just exceptions to the rule. In the old days, if you look at old watercolors (pre-1850s), you will see that they mostly used browns too. It was too expensive to have blue or purple or true greens. In the case of plant-based, it's not even quite possible except the two exceptions. It's a style, really. I've done a number of paintings using vintage-type colors and they turn out nostalgic and nice.

  • @OtoKano

    Wooooo Lutea! I've seen them in the Jackson's catalogue but been put off by their price & lack of online reviews. So thank you for making a review about them. How did you find their colour mixing? Did they mix in the usual expected ways or did you have mixes that were more surprising?

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't mixed them a lot, but I will revisit these paints, I think, and focus more on mixing, layering and lifting. Sort of a second impression, I guess :)
      I was a bit scared of mixing them, as I find them already very natural and pretty.

    • @SPQRKlio
      @SPQRKlio 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I was planning to order some things from Jackson’s and was looking through their watercolour catalogue (because that’s the most fun thing to read in the evening 😊), and the thyme-based paint caught my eye. Both the colour and the concept. I like the shade and texture in your swatches and love the subtlety in the paintings, but I still haven’t made up my mind to try it-I have SO many paints already. I do like the idea of my paint smelling like herbs, even just for a little while....

      Hi Victor! Funny thing is that they all smell a bit different. Only one had a "weird" smell; it smelled a bit fermented, like yogurt. Otherwise, it's not very noticeable. I wish I had remembered to mention if they have a smell in the video!

    I'm concerned about the lightfastness rating of plant-based watercolors. I heard they're unreliable. Recently I read that the original formula for Rose Madder having terrible lightfastness because it was derived from the madder plant.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was concerned too, but apparently these rate as Good or Very Good. I'll see about making a lightfastness test when I eventually get more colors :)

  • @StephenMarkTurner
    @StephenMarkTurner 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Is it fair to call these 'medium chroma' paints? After watching a recent vid on paper quality by 'Mind of Watercolor', I think lower chroma paints (all paints really) should be tested somewhat on Arches or similar superior quality paper. Also, after watching a video (by Liron??) on a very limited low chroma palette, I think that lower chroma paints should be used in smaller amounts (or at least simpler mixes). Too much mixing kills chroma (which is already in shorter supply).

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's fair, yes. These are definitely not super bright, vibrant colors. I will revisit these paints, as people in the comments have come up with good questions. I'll see how they are on Arches paper then :)
      I was hesitant to mix the paints, as I find it kills the uniqueness of the pigments.

  • @monique727
    @monique727 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love love love your paintings but it’s too bad these paints use honey and insects. More vegan options might be difficult to come by, but the paint colors are not that vibrant anyway, and vegan would be a better choice (we definitely need insects to survive).

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! :)
      I understand. However, I'm very happy that Lutea has a sustainable approach to sourcing their pigments. As a flexible and nuanced semi-vegan, the sustainability side of things wins over the 100% vegan thing. Of course, sustainable AND 100% vegan would be the ideal dream, but it's not there yet :)
