    Is 120 hours realistic? Not in my case so far, but that's with high brightness, HR, power, and radar connected, and controlling my smart trainer for indoor exercise. Detailed battery life claims are found here: support.coros.com/hc/en-us/articles/27280382578196-DURA-Battery-Specifications
    Still plenty of longevity for randonneuring. Would you take chance on Dura?

    Coros had a swift reply and listened to my suggestion of a left handed version.

    Hi I got my Coros Dura in October so only 3 months this way. I also do Randoneuring, I decided to go for it due to the battery life and as long as I have a line to follow I'm good. :)
    I have seen a few updates and been using it for all sorts of rides and it has been fine for me. I guess I'm a simple use case with no power sensors etc. It will be a boon for me for the longer rides (600km) and if we ever get enough sun here in the UK then it might help out too.
    Great balanced review as always!

      Nice! I expect to be quite content with the Dura too. My randonneuring club rarely includes turn-by-turn directions on their course files, so I am used to just following the line.

    Thanks for the real review. I decided to get one of these because the problems are all software fixable and the price is okay. I mostly just want it to record my data honestly for a long time rather than direct me most of the time. I hope they will focus on making the climbing features first class.

      Cheers, the Dura is a good choice for recording rides. Lovely UI and quick to respond.

    I've only used mine for a few rides so far but I'm pretty happy with it. We'll see how it deals with routing/navigation but I used my Wahoo Bolt v2 for a gravel race in November and it kept on trying to take me the wrong way even though I'd checked the GPX and it looked accurate, it was provided by the event organisers and no one else had an issue with it. I only finished the race because I was with a large group of people and no one else turned when my Wahoo told me to! Long story short, I think even computers from the big established names have issues so I'm not too fussed as long as this works 99% of the time. One thing I already prefer over my Wahoo is that after a ride it's automatically added to Strava. No matter what I tried with my Wahoo, I had to open the Elemnt app to get it to sync.

      Interesting to hear that. I suppose even automobile navigation messes up from time to time too. Manual uploads to Strava would be a buzz kill though. Glad you are enjoying the Dura.

    thanks for the review, i think its very fair. i think im going to hold off for now. its got a lot of good features but for my uses i think wahoo or garmin are a better fit

    i'm thinking of gluing a 21700 battery on the back of my garmin 520 and wiring it up to the battery contacts inside the unit. 50-60 hour battery life but with fast off route notification. probably won't do it though

    Nice review. Your experience with the Dura is more or less in line with mine so far.
    There is an ultra race on my calendar for 2025. Using the Dura and not having to charge, saves me from carrying (or charging) a 10.000 mAh battery pack, compared to riding with my old Wahoo Elemnt Bolt (V1). For this alone, it's worth putting up with the shortcomings of this head unit. Like you've pointed out, a few of those issues have been addressed in past firmware updates, but Coros still has some work to do. In the short amount of time that I've used the Dura (a little over 16 hours of riding time), I've already noticed some room for improvement:
    - When going off route for the first time during a ride, a large pop-up covers the whole screen, telling you to use the app for rerouting. I want to see the map when I'm going the wrong way.
    - Strange behavior when backtracking a route. I went off route and backtracked the line on the map for a few hundred meters. The map turned upside down and back again a couple of times. Made me dizzy...
    - Sticky watts. During a recent workout with ten 10 second sprints, on two of those the wattage picked up well into the second half of the interval.
    - No way of customizing the activity screen that's displayed during a workout (as far as I'm aware).
    - Unrealistic battery life claims. This is supposed to be the headline feature for the Dura, but when I extrapolate the battery consumption so far, I'd get about 50 hours of use out of a full battery. Mind you, it's winter where I live, so the solar panel is of little to no use. It's also kind of cold, but not freezing (around 5 degrees Celsius). 50 hours is great, but far from the claimed 70 to 120 hours. For what it's worth: the screen brightness is set to 'normal' and the gps to 'auto'. There are two devices connected through bluetooth (power and radar).
    - An issue that I have to investigate a bit further, is that it appears that my Garmin Varia radar light lasts considerably shorter than when it was connected to the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. With that unit, I got a consistent 12-14 hours of use out of the Varia. But when connected to the Dura, this is reduced to 5-6 hours. Battery life gained on one device and lost on the other...? I'm not aware of any other users with this issue, so it may just be me.

      Thank you for the detailed feedback. Interesting that the sticky watts is still an issue. Your battery life expectation match mine too, although I expected my indoor training with the Dura was the reason for the tanking. I'll also look further into radar battery life. I'm testing out the Cycplus L7 and the Magicshine R300 now and their respective battery life claims are not quite matching expectations, but I only have the Dura to pair them to.

    I'll be honest, it's an okay bike computer for the price and how corus is dealing with updates to its software.
    I love the review and update! Keep it up! If they make a dura 2 at the future and I hope it's going to be refined as they'll learn from the dura 1 and all the reviews.
    I hope hamerhead karoo (3) gives you a computer to test love the process of your reviews!

      Thank you! The current Dura still has plenty of room to grow with firmware updates, so I hope they can stick with it. I have hope that the Dura will influence other manufacturers to pay more attention to the possibility of very long battery endurance. Competition breeds innovation.

    Oh man, is it better than Lezyne ? I still have mine and want to upgrade it this year

    • @overbikedrandonneuring
      @overbikedrandonneuring  วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Spellscape when I moved from the Garmin to the Lezyne, both had cumbersome ecosystems with regards to the device menu navigation, and the integration of the phone app and web app. Lezyne was a minor downgrade in overall user experience, but had some advantages too. Not sure what Garmin is up to these days, but the Coros ecosystem is all really intuitive and pleasant to use. I feel more willing to use more functions because of how well it's laid out. The Dura is a good candidate, but be sure to cross shop other options, too.

    @slcpunk70 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Long live the Lezyne GPS! Really, such a bargain if you can deal with some phaffing about ;) Still waiting for a worthy replacement. Haven't seen one yet - only the Chinese brands ( igpsport etc ) are coming close. thanks for a good review. I *might* be tempted by the Coros at $199USD. Maybe. But I'm an incredible cheapskate and Lezyne continually impress me with Customer Service - they fixed my MegaXL after I cracked the screen and rendered it useless ( I paid shipping one way ). Seriously - who does that - it was fully out of warranty.

    • @overbikedrandonneuring
      @overbikedrandonneuring  วันที่ผ่านมา

      @slcpunk70 the Mega XL has a certain charm to it for sure. My Xmount screws rusted and corroded, so I drilled them out and glued a Garmin style 1/4 turn in is place. I was looking to replace it last year and just wasn't impressed with available options enough to switch. Even after several years, I still use the wrong buttons all the time for basic functions.

    • @slcpunk70
      @slcpunk70 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@overbikedrandonneuring Interesting. I use the XL in Landscape mode and am pretty used to the buttons. I would consider the other issues: Fairly clunky navigation and route following as well as some drop outs from sensors my main complaints. Also isn't the easiest to see in late afternoon/early evening light. I 3D printed a couple of additional mounts to use on my road bike, and have had good luck with longevity so far with the actual mount on the base of the unit - and like I said - if there was something wrong, I wouldn't hesitate to contact Lezyne. For the cost of shipping, I bet they fix it for you. I'm rooting for the Coros to not be popular, causing a price drop and making for a nice option ;)

    Is the price of the Dura competitive with similarly featured GPS units?

    • @overbikedrandonneuring
      @overbikedrandonneuring  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hard to say, as it's battery life is best in class, but navigation is so limited. That makes 'similar featured' hard to qualify. For my use case, I was cross-shopping against Garmin 540/840 Solar, and it is significantly less expensive. Units from Chinese brands like iGPSport and Magene are likely more price competitive with non-battery features.

  •  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    it needs offline rerouting for me to consider it. Phone should be optional, that's why you buy a cycling computer. I'm sticking with my Roam V1.

    has anyone really done a real life battery test of this unit? meaning riding until the battery runs out and not just looking at battery percentages displayed in the unit, dc rainmaker claims those percentages are bogus.

    • @overbikedrandonneuring
      @overbikedrandonneuring  5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I recharged the unit from exactly 50% to 100% and measured the charge with a current tester. Results were 485 mah of charge, which is almost perfectly in line with the claimed 960 mah battery capacity. % charge reported by the unit was accurate in this case, which gives some credence to claims folks make about run time versus charge % observed.
      Usage conditions will heavily affect the unit's battery life. Coros outlines that impact here, and includes expected outcomes for various conditions: support.coros.com/hc/en-us/articles/27280382578196-DURA-Battery-Specifications
      I typically used high brightness, map display, 3 connected devices (including radar which results in many notifications per hour), and interacted with the unit heavily. All these things drain battery more than the use case claiming 120 hours. I mostly rode at night and near winter solstice, so solar gains were almost 0. Battery drain rates as observed over time and after each ride on the 'battery info' post-ride page are in line with the expectations outlined on that web page.
      This carries over to the claim that '1 hour of strong sun = 2 hours of riding time' as well. If my use case uses double the energy per hour vs. the ideal condition, 1 hour of strong sun = 1 hour of riding time for me.

    "I like big screens and I cannot lie ... ". I bought a Garmin 1040 Solar because I wanted a bigger map and larger numbers as my eyes age. The Garmin is definitely not perfect, but I don't see this Coros as a replacement in it's current form. Unreliable navigation prompts is a problem.

    • @overbikedrandonneuring
      @overbikedrandonneuring  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @Stevenwalks we are all beta testers now. I was tempted to try the new Wahoo Ace computer too, another unpolished release. At least these can be mostly fixed with firmware though. The half-baked drivetrain components flooding the market are a lot harder to salvage.
