"That was a masterpiece!" One of many by Savatage! The album (Dead Winter Dead) is a rock opera set in Sarajevo, taking place during the fall of the Iron Curtain (and independence of Yugoslavia) up through the bitter ethnic fighting which ensued in the region. The two tracks you just listened to are from the beginning of the album, with "Sarajevo" providing an introduction the story's overview (as the Gargoyle watches it unfold), and "This Is The Time" describing the feelings of unrelenting pride and optimism as the population finally faces the prospect of actual freedom. The dark sound in the first track foreshadows the events which will transpire as the story unfolds. A great stand-alone Savatage track from another album, and one which doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves, would be "Chance"--another epic inspired by the story of Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara. One of my favorite bands of all time.
This is my favorite cd by Savatage. The singer you mentioned is Zak Stevens. He took over when original lead singer Jon Oliva left to do another project in 1992. Unfortunately, Jon’s brother and his brother’s wife were killed in October, when a drunk driver forced them off a bridge. Jon came back to do a tribute for Criss, they got guest guitarist Alex Skolnick from Testament and did a whole cd (Handful of Rain). Then Jon stayed. He sings on this cd (Dead Winter Dead) on a couple of songs, plays keyboards and wrote most of the lyrics. Anyway, there is a song on this cd that you might have heard before. It will begin being played soon on most rock stations, since it is nearing Christmas. It is an instrumental called Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 that starts out as God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and ends as Carol of the Bells. It did so well in the fall of 1995, that Jon and producer Paul O’Neill came up with the idea for Trans Siberian Orchestra. They are not quite as heavy as Savatage, but close. Savatage forms the base for TSO and they add in whatever other singers and musicians they need. They began in the fall of 1997 and tour from Thanksgiving to early January. They have toured every year since 1997. It is Pretty cool.
Savatage is so underrated as are all the side projects form the various members. They had sell out crowds at arenas (and so does Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and yet not many no of them. Gotta do more Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Jon Oliva’s Pain, Circle II Circle, Archon Angel
@@NicoDarkhope I think Jon still does something with TSO like writing. Chris hasn’t put anything out since 2018. The Savatage reunion show was a one off apparently. TSO still does their winter tour (when possible) but has only done a few albums in their overall career. Zak is doing a bunch of stuff right now. It sure about the others. It is sad since they are all so talented
You might already know this but the producer and a few band members formed TSO (Trans Siberian Orchestra), which is huge and is a big thing around Christmas time. You should check out some of their music, it mostly classical music in a metal form.
Dead Winter Dead on this record has one of the most face melting guitar solos ever. As others have said, this is a concept album and needs to be listened to from start to finish to truly appreciate.
thanks for bringing us more of Savatage! You need to listen and react to Morphine Child and Believe, two masterpieces! Congratulations from a Brazilian fan!
If you think this is killer, you need to check out "Conversation Piece" "Morphine Child" "Starlight" "Doesn't Matter Anyway" these are absolute killer tracks
Mentally yours is a badass song from them. Criss's death scarred me so hard when I was younger and never got past their later albums. I know I have to but it just isn't the same...
To really appreciate this, the Overture should have been included before it, lol. This is from the 2nd "rock opera" (Dead Winter Dead) since Streets, and the first one with new vocalist Zak Stevens, and the first to feature the orchestral backup of what would become the TSO (Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the brainchild of Savatage producer and co-songwriter, Paul O'Neill) The followup album Wake Of Magellan is even more epic - I recommended on the "If I Go Away" reaction that Streets have a showdown with W.A.S.P.'s The Crimson Idol due to the similar concept (with different outcomes), and I would love to see a "full album" reaction to more of these conceptual albums and "rock operas" (from Savatage and other bands). Not necessarily a showdown, but a single album, played start to finish, so as to appreciate the storytelling and musical transitions. The TSO albums would be amazing to do during the holiday season (well, the 1st, 2nd, and 4th albums, which are collectively referred to as the "Christmas Trilogy" - the other album are not holiday-themed). These Savatage albums have expanded liner notes (all written by the band's producer and co-writer, Paul O'Neill) which tell the story in more detail, as poetic prose in between the songs.
This cd deals with Yugoslavia and what happened to it after communism fell, Tito died and the seven current nations that used to make up Yugoslavia began warring with each other. It tells a love story of a couple on opposite sides. There is a Serbian soldier and a Bosnian woman. At night, during lulls between the bombardments, both of our subjects sit and listen to an old man playing violin in the main square of Sarajevo. One day, they hear nothing and both go to investigate. They meet each other and, being on opposite sides from warring nations, there should be hate, but there isn’t l. They are actually attracted to each other. They find that the old man has been killed, by a bomb and are saddened, but buoyed by the idea of leaving together and getting away from this horror. They do and you are led to assume all ends well with the couple. The song you heard covers the time shortly after the fall of communism. Other songs deal with the war that leads to the climax
Check out early Savatage from their debut album Sirens from 1983. The track I Believe are so good. Solo after solo by Criss Oliva. RIP. Vocalist Zachery Stevens who sings on Sarajevo are also known for Circle II Circle and Archon Angel. Both bands sounds a lot like Savatage. Circle II Circle had their first to albums produced by Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill RIP. Listen to Watching In Silence. Archon Angel - Fallen. Original singer Jon Oliva also have Jon Oliva's Pain and Doctor Butcher. In the latter guitarist Chris Caffery are also a member. Caffery also have a great band called Spirit of Fire
I don’t know what all you have listened to by Savatage, but I would suggest, Legions, Devastation, Gutter Ballet, When the Crowds are Gone, Hounds, Edge of Thorns, He Carves His Stone, Handful of Rain, Chance, Symmetry, Alone You Breathe, A Little Too Far, Believe, Starlight, This Isn’t What We Meant, Not What You See, Turns to Me, The Wake of Magellan and The Hourglass. Any one is great and I left out a bunch. Hope you enjoy.
They bounced back well after losing their previous lead singer. This whole concept album/ metal opera is incredible. It is best enjoyed in its entirety.
They didn't lose their previous singer, he's called john oliva, he's playing piano and writes the songs. He didn't sing on this album. They lost he's brother chris on the guitar to a car accident.
Check the volume on your mic. Can hardly hear you then the song about blows my speakers. Same thing with one of your wifes last reactions. Otherwise great job!
One of the greatest bands most people never heard of
It is a shame. RIP Criss.

Love this album. "One Child", "This Isn't What We Meant"

When the Crowds Are Gone and Believe will bring you to tears
Their songs are always so satisfying... it's been many years now, every time they hit me emotionally. Every time
"Taunting Cobras" from Handful of Rain ROCKS.

One of my favourite Savatage songs and albums!!
I love your Pure joy in reacting to these amazing songs. Well done man.
Discovering bands like Savatage is incredibly satisfying
Love Savatage.

Al Pitrelli and Chris Caffrey on guitars.. Such a phenomenal duo :)
Very awesome reaction my friend ❤️, so underrated this band is.

Where are all the views on this video? So sad..........did the copywrite ban come down or something? Every Savatage reaction deserves better. :/

This piece of music is kinda similar to Dream Theater a long before Dream Theater became famous
