    I once attended an after party at SXSW and this dude was tearing it up inside playing a house set only with the SP-404. As a DJ who had no idea of people who actually performed without a laptop, it opened my world to hardware music gear and it's been so much fun learning how powerful these machines are!

      @breadstickzzzzzzz Should have rephrased, I usually see laptops at popup afterparties for the ease of setup. I knew CDJ's existed and I've performed on them before, but seeing this small device on the table playing a killer house set was eye opening. Was the first time I've seen an SP404 anywhere

    To the younger people on here, I know it's an automatic reaction for the mind/ears to shut off when a TH-cam creator says to visit their website for merchandise, etc. But really consider doing so because all this stuff they do is time-consuming. And music doesn't exactly pay much, as we all know. So spend $20 or whatever to support a TH-cam person like Ricky. It's really not much - the cost of a patch cable or a couple of beers at a bar etc. - but makes such a difference for content creators.

    This video made me realize why people are always remarking how the 404 "feels" better than so many modern samplers. They're thinking it's something inherent in the 404 but it's not the 404 at all... it's them. Admittedly, part of the reason for their assertion about "feel" is a direct result of the quantize function not being technically capable of quantizing anything Nevertheless, a lot of talented 404 users aren't giving themselves the credit they've earned.
    This is actually the best "tutorial" for the 404 that I've watched (and I've watched a lot lately). It's a "practical" walk-through.

    Been jamming with the 404 since Christmas, I feel like I've gotten pretty fast with it. I think using a metronome on my phone really helps when I'm laying down hip-hop beats with those seasick kick patterns, but I also came across that looping trick to get a steady 4 on the floor kick pattern for house when I was looking for ways to be more locked in. Great minds think alike!
    Having rock-solid loops and steady tempo on the 404 are crucial if you plan on finishing or rearranging your tracks in a DAW, even if it has good time stretching like Ableton. The first few beats I made were freeform as fuck, everything looped perfectly in the 404, but there was so much drift in between bars that it was a huge hassle getting everything locked in with Ableton.

    How do you get the loop from the hardware to a multitrack in to ableton..... you do multitrack into ableton to mix it right?
    Makes me wonder, do people release tracks straight from hardware like this🤔

    • @Zlagie
      @Zlagie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A little anecdote: I've got a 404 and MPC 1000. While I absolutely love the MPC, I was one of the unfortunate people to get the faulty pads that barely worked. While waiting to afford the pad replacement, the 404 became my sole sampler and therefore super intuitive for me. So I kinda find it funny seeing people call it crazy difficult because I was stuck with it until it made sense!

    Is there a reason you prefer to resample versus using the pattern sequencer? Sounds good!

    • @i-never-look-at-replies-lol
      @i-never-look-at-replies-lol 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sequencers on all the SP series pretty much suck and it's easier to bounce everything down to stems & parts for payback instead of having the sequencer do it. And also because the sequencer is locked in time you might run into issues with sampled loops i.e. 120 BPM sequence, but the loop is something like 119.48 BPM because you did it by ear and it sounded close enough, but then you start hearing gaps or the first beat coming in too early when retriggering. You can play two loops back to back that aren't entirely matched up in BPM and it won't sound too bad, but if you have a sequencer triggering them, you're gonna hear the difference. It's easier to make loops of approximate BPM and trigger them manually instead of trying to get every sample loop the exact same BPM and triggering it on a sequencer.

    video request!!! so I make music with a more typical hardware midi setup, but I am fascinated by the sp404 as a kind of hybrid dj/live type device, where people do long sets on them. I would love for you do a video about live performance on the sp404 because it has so much potential to be a standalone/hybrid dj/live set type device. And there are a zillion vids where people do lofi hip hop sets on them, but I think house or techno could also really work because of that really cool sound it has (I sold mine a few years ago but I always think about picking one up again to do this kind of thing)

    Rad video! So with the resample method, do you not end up running out of pads/slots hella fast over time since you're using them for both samples and completed "sequences?"
