For so many people today, weight loss and weight gain are not merely about calories in and calories out. Our concerns about weight are often pointing to emotional and spiritual dimensions. Many people are locked in decades-long battles with their bodies. In this video, Marc David offers some unique ideas and interventions in the familiar stories about weight by asking what spiritual lessons our extra weight may be inviting us to learn.

Greetings friends, this is Marc David, founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating.
Today’s Topic: Spiritual Lessons We Can Learn from Weight
Here’s the reality that everyone knows:
We live in a world where weight, body fat, extra pounds, gaining it, and losing it are all a very big deal.
Our collective concern around weight is one of the biggest conundrums that impact the human heart and mind. The amount of pain and suffering that occurs around this topic can easily be described as profound. Clearly what we’re doing when it comes to weight loss doesn’t work.
I don’t take this topic lightly at all, and for that reason I think it’s important that we all do our best to shed more light on this subject.
And shining the light of skillful consciousness means we look to other dimensions to help find pieces of the weight loss, weight gain puzzle that may be of importance.
In my 30+ years of research, clinical experience, inquiry, curiosity, and deep care around this topic, I’m often led to a particular and unexpected place:
    Spirituality.
Please forgive me if you don’t like that word or if it doesn’t apply to you. If you’re an atheist, then substitute the term “character growth and development.” If you come from a faith and Bible-based approach, then substitute the term “how God is asking me to grow.”
And if you’re cool with the term spirituality, here’s what I mean:
There’s a dimension that goes beyond what the eye can see. There’s a hidden architecture to the universe. There are unseen forces that move us and guide us that we tend to know very little about. And the great saints, sages, prophets, religious and spiritual leaders throughout history have all pretty much agreed that when we set our sights towards the realm of the spiritual or sacred - our vision begins to open up.
With all this in mind, I’d like to share with you 1 important spiritual lesson that we can learn from weight.
And when I say weight, I’m talking about the challenges we face in trying to lose it, the challenges we face in not weighing the number that we want, of dealing with the prejudices and judgments of others, and the challenge of dealing with our own harsh commentary about the body we been given.

Dear community, i hope you dont mind me sharing my story. I was a very attractive girl. I had the perfect body because i did everything i could to look like a Victoria secret model. Spent three hours exercising everyday and eating only raw foods like veggies and frutis and lean proteins like boiled chicken and fish. Everywhere i went i had this incredible magnetism about me. I had men wrapped aroubd my finger, got opportunities easily, got so much attention, constantly had free gifts , everyone wanted to be my friend . Then i got married and pregnant. As ny weight grew unbelievably i was bothered but told myself i will lose pregnancy weight quickly cos something and probably the only thing i was good at was losing weight. But somehow after kids weight wouldnt budge. Everyone was shocked at what happened to me . People openly told me i was so huge ny own husband said he didnt feel that attraction and after 5.5yrs, today finally i understood why i was given this "curse". Being fat was actually the biggest blessing to me cos i understood who really had been my friend and well wisher and who was there just for my looks. I started developing my character and actually got out of my narcissistic head that was up in the clouds. I am so thankful for this experience which though was torturous but extremely important. I love my aoul and body and now thank my fats and release them. Thank you, i am sorry i hated u all these years. I love you and you are free to go 😊

Life does not have to respond to our humble demands. Excess weight can teach us humility.
