  • This is a kalimba I made for a friend several years ago. It's made from a coffee can, a clipboard, a paintbrush handle, and some heavy bobby pins (hair pins). I love to play it. It's a very relaxing instrument.
    Sorry for the poor sound quality. My camera mic was resonating with the kalimba. You can't hear the distortion when you play it.

      Emily Gonzales - Thanks. I was just making it up. I think it was the 1st, 4th and 5th chords. Three-chord rock and roll forever.

    Hello, I am trying to build a homemade instrument for a school project and I found your video and I think your Kalimba looks great! Could you provide specific details as to how you built your Kalimba and any tips you would give. Thanks!!

      Crystal, thanks for the compliments. I don't really have any instructions other than the ones I gave in the narration of the video. For homemade instruments, you just have to take the materials you have available and experiment until you get something nice. Be creative.
      The one tip I would give you is to try and find a tuner of some sort and tune your instrument to a specific key. Even the best instruments sound bad if they aren't tuned correctly, and homemade ones can sound great if they are.

    Some might call it a video, I call it a gift. Now I have to drink more coffee...

    You need to deaden the "dead end" of the tines. You have them on metal contributing to the sound - but those "dead ends" are not tuned! Don't let that end of the tines vibrate...

    Cool! I usually call those thumb pianos, but it sounds cool anyway!

      Kilimba is one of the east-African names for thumb pianos, like mbira. I think it is Bantu.

    I wish there was more lighting to the video, as it is really dark in places in showing what you did.

      They are hair pins. From a general store.

    Was the clipboard hardboard , plastic, or metal?

    • @ClaytonDarwin
      @ClaytonDarwin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ethb Me - Hardboard. But I would use something else if I did it again. 3mm plywood maybe.

      I think once I decided what I wanted, I did it on a Saturday afternoon. But that was 10 years ago.
