I was homeless from the fall to the spring. I maintained a job at a junkyard and found a POS tent in the woods that was abandoned, frozen to the ground, ripped badly to were you could see the stars at night. I grabbed a bunch of bubble wrap, old clothes and luckily I had several blankets, a few down blankets and a nice sub zero sleeping bag. The floor of the tent was frozen so I put down a layer of bubble wrap, layer of old clothes, layer of bubble wrap and repeated a few times. I would wrap myself in blankets after climbing in the sleeping bag and would completely get under the blankets and I stayed toasty warm all night long. Id feel a moment of sadness as I got situated for the night, then it'd pass and I felt grateful to just be warm.

I've been homeless in the past and here's a tip. If you're without a tent, look for a place that sells beds and mattresses. When they get mattresses delivered, they come wrapped in a very heavy plastic bag that they throw away. Makes for an excellent bivy!

I was homeless for almost two years also had a job. I camped on old quarry land. I stayed alone and had four different ways in. I was in the center of a huge thorn thicket in a shelter of bent over saplings covered with black plastic. I cooked with a one burner propane stove to keep hidden and wore a rubber army chem./bio top and bottom over wool . Later moved into a small cave I made a door for. It was like being a mountain goat to get in and out of it. Rough way to live. Sheriff department searched twice he told me later. He laughed shook my hand .Said he couldnt find a trace of me . Told him I was watching you looking. He said I figgured that to. He told the company he wasnt wasting any more resources on searches. Told them about me getting a kid out of trouble at open water filled quarry they own and if he is there leave him alone he does more good than bad..

Read about " the north pond hermit" dude avoided human contact for like almost 30 years. Unfortunately he stole food from cabins on a pond but how he survived is amazing... he never lit a fire for warmth in the Maine winters. He would be active during the coldest times of night to keep warm with his own body heat.

I spent $150 on a north face -20 sleeping bag and $120 on a Thermarest mat. I live outside year round. It's all about the proper gear and spending money wisely. Living outside isn't hard if you're smart and have the gear and fortitude. Also a membership at your local YMCA where you can shower daily and rent a locker goes a long way. Having that hot shower in the morning and a locker full of clean clothes goes a long way towards making the homeless life much easier.

I have collected horseshoe fungus for fire for years, but never thaught to use it with a char tin ! Great idea! Australian Natives use horseshoe fungus to carry a fire from one place to another ,because it smoulders very slowly it's easy to manage to carry your fire from one camp to the next, just get a nice big piece and blow on it occasionally where you are nursing your baby fire on the edge of the fungus . Your Sacret fire can last as long as you want , I've heard of Sacret fires kept alive for years this way , nomadicaly moving one camp to the next , and there is always an abundance of supplies fire wood ,food plants and animals available ,with nomadic camping . :) All is Self ,love Thyself ! Respect !

I lived in a cheap apartment but not the really cheap ones in town. I know that in some places rents are incredibly high compared to Georgia. I really want to know your situation. Sadly, this is all theatre, if you truly are homeless why would you gravitate away from city life and support networks and instead pitch a camp on prairie flat lands beside a frozen lake? At that time of year ice fishing is likely your easiest option for food. And if you burn that many calories lighting a fire in the open, you will need food, soon. Glad you survived your personal brush with being homeless.

I have been living outside since I was a kid. At 53 I have been living this way since 12 years old. Living in a house usually makes me feel trapped and anxious. I am much happier outside and have become very adept at living outside and to be honest it is a far simpler and a less stressful life. I do encounter in some places police and other authorities that try to hinder me but it is so easy to relocate a camp that they are no big hindrance.
Plastic is also a great insulator against freezing weather. I have slept outside in -0 degree weather... on the ground, in rain and snow, with only a blanket and a roll of plastic sheet. a 1 dollar box of plastic bags will save your life on a freezing night when a fire can not be made. If you don't have a dollar... plastic bags can be found in dumpsters all over town.
One thing that I like and plan to use more is a small solar panel and wind generator to charge batteries or super capacitors and have been researching how to make a small portable still for purifying water. I have been also buying materials to make a ultra light water going airplane for gunkholing along the Intracoastal Waterway. While I do not consider myself homeless, I do like to move around and have lived aboard boats for years and to my way of thinking a flying boat would be a great adventure for an old man like me living out on the edge.

I carry a ferro-rod, magnesium block, a few storm proof matches, a freznel lense, a Ronson lighter and a 6" hunk of 3/8" cotton rope, charred on the end where the soda can metal is wrapped around it. This rope will catch a spark even if it's been dipped in water. I hate having to fight to get a fire going! This gear will light all the fires I need for a year or so. By then I'll have gathered a ton of pine resin, chaga, charred punkwood, fat wood and made a pump firedrill, found flint for striking sparks, etc. If you stay in one place, you can just bank your coals in a thick layer of ashes and dirt, with a bit of fuel wood in the mix and the fire will be re-ignitable for 8+ hours, as long as you've got rainproof shelter over it.

Eugene Runkis I’ve been looking for someone that would appreciate a job. A nice place to live. Vehicle to drive and live on a ranch with privacy. I have looked everywhere mostly trying to focus on someone down on their luck or a Veteran. Can’t find anyone that doesn’t have either a drug problem or drinking problem or just don’t want to work. It’s a easy farm job. A lot of it is just being there so things don’t get stolen. Checking fence. Feeding calves and other livestock. Basic stuff that I as a woman can do so why can’t I find anyone wanting a job??? Everyone wants to get shit for free or be the boss. It’s ridiculous. I’m going to import me a family from Mexico or Guatemala or someplace they would appreciate a solid lifetime place to live and work. If you know of anyone that might fit what I’m looking for please let me know.

Solid info as usual Eugene! The cooling effect of moist cotton is due to evaporation. Using clay planting pots to keep food cool is called the Zeer Pot method and works the same way. Also the same reason that you want to wear cotton in hot environments/weather. (I know you know this, my remarks are for viewers!) Hope you and yours are doing well.

If one wants to be cold wear cotton. The wife and I still have the stones with handles that her parents would warm on the wood stove so she could take them to bed to keep her feet warm. We grew up before insulation and insulated windows and I've lived in houses that the snow would blow into when the wind was blowing hard enough. Neither of us died from the experience though.
