    I had some 1 hour down time at work (3 am). I decided to listen to this while reading about low-noise microphones and recorders (starting from your web site). I never listened to John Cage in my youth, thinking that it was too random. I'm quite surprised of the structure that was there all along.

    When i was studying music in college, our professor gave us a 90 minute recital with a prepared piano. It was the hardest thing i had to do there😂

    Glorious work of imaginative and sensitive personality! Your performance is excellent and reveals all the superb quality of this fantastic work. Especially extraordinary rhythm and tempo feeling. Sonatas and Interludes are so complex and somehow natural in that case. Thanks!

      Thanks for taking the time to listen and to mention rhythm and tempo. It's easy to focus on the obvious timbre and preparation effects, but rhythm and tempo is the cornerstone of the whole work.

    thanks a lot for sharing your wonderful performance.
    Last week I met a friend after we had both watched a really good program on TV about the Minimalists. He said that Steve Reich had been a massive influence in his life. I said John Cage had been a massive influence on mine. The following day when I did some vacuuming, a large nut and bolt fell onto the floor, seemingly from nowhere

      @@jessemyerspiano I'm surprised. Seems like you'd need to practice a prepared piano piece with the piano prepared. Otherwise, wouldn't the unexpected sonic outcome completely throw you off? BTW, I'm thoroughly enjoying your performance. I haven't heard the Sonatas and Interludes in years. They seem even better than ever.

    • @jessemyerspiano
      @jessemyerspiano  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Joey Harrison I’d say I practice 90% unprepared. Obviously you’d want to practice prepared before performing it. But unprepared is like actors rehearsing a play in their street clothes. Prepared is like having all the actors in their costumes and makeup. So even unprepared you can imagine the final product.

      @@jessemyerspiano I enjoy your playing as you approach cage warmly. But yr analogy, tho intriguing, ultimately doesn't wash as acting is not nearly as concerned with sound as music is. Yr first two sentences explained your methodology fine.

    I hate to sound dumb but I really don’t get the appeal of this

    • @jessemyerspiano
      @jessemyerspiano  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I get it, it’s pretty weird and esoteric. But there are many reasons that are appealing to me. The instrument I’ve played my whole life can be modified into something unrecognizable as a piano- a rediscovery of the instrument.
