The Tea Time Tea and new Tea Time Sweater now available in new colors: www.bonfire.com/the-anime-tea-tee/ Huge thanks to my patrons who help bring this vids to life: Patreon.com/theanimetea Update About Animism in Ghibli Films: I mistakenly said that Animism is a Shinto belief when it’s actually a term used to describe religions that worship or respect nature and objects. Also I mistakenly said Isao Takahata directed Whisper of the Heart when it was actually Yoshifumi Kondō.
This spoke to my soul. I grew up being a bit ostracized and very misunderstood; neither my family nor my peers really understood me (I was a weeb from the jump). I grew up lonely as a result and even fell into some bad influences and bad habits as a result. I made mistakes, but I’ve been learning from them and healing as I’ve matured. I had no idea about this particular sub genre of anime, but for me it’s like - indulging in it without knowing it was a thing, and having a slight concept but not having a label for it😅. Watching certain series really felt cathartic, healing, relaxing and wholesome; they radiated a warmth that I had never known, much less experienced in life up to that point. I cried watching this because it really evoked those feelings and thoughts. I’m a bit of a people pleaser now because of the past trauma (from loneliness). When I do engage (when I’m not too afraid to) I often have way too much energy and it’s off putting to a lot of people, but it’s like a subconscious attempt to secure opportunities to validate and vindicate myself; as I’ve not gotten many such opportunities thus far in life. People often think I’m phony or with ulterior motives when really I just… am still searching for that belonging. Slice of Life anime really helped begin my healing journey. Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh, Cardcaptor Sakura (rewatch), Konohana Kitan (underrated), anything Studio Ghibli, among others. Honestly even My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (some might think the title sounds cheesy but when you’ve been lonely so much, it makes sense; when your old “friends” were not the best friends or influences for being a good person, it makes sense). Thank you for all your amazing content 🙏🏿 ❤ It means a lot to a lot of us! 😊
Thank you for sharing your story🙏🏾 I also relate to being ostracized and lonely growing up and even still as an adult. Love that iyashikei series help to ground us and remind us about how beautiful life is, even when it's lonely and isolating at times.
24:55 You what's wild, this video is actually the content I'm looking for, that kind of video that talks about what people are passionate about. Analysis and blind reaction videos are like empathic candy for me! With that said, Aria and Mushi-Shi are my top healing anime. I used to fall to sleep to my old Aria DVDs!
Thank you for highlighting "Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou" or "Quiet County Cafe", as it was localized. I read the original Japanese manga over a decade ago, and it has stuck with me in a way no other manga has quite matched. It's hard to explain, but the quiet and beautiful yet sad splash pages really emphasize a fleeting peace and bittersweet moment in time. If you have any interest in iyashike, check out the original manga (I believe it was translated recently)--it's a thoroughly unique read.
I love that you are talking about this, because I'm addicted to natsume book of friends and anime similar to it. I could never put a word to what they are called ,thank you.
Literally 1 second before you mentioned mushi-shi, i yelled "LIKE MUSHI-SHI" lol i so rarely see it mentioned and its left an impact on me more than most series. I didnt realize it was part of an entire genre with multiple sub genres. I think this video might have changed me life for the better. I cant wait to check out so many potentially moving works of art! Thanks for making this 🤘
Thank you for teaching me a new genre. I could never put it into words correctly. We know how the google search function is atm, and searching ghibli-esque shows wasn't cutting it😅😭
I love iyashikei so much and i think this video is a wonderful breakdown of what makes the sub genre so special to me (and it reminded me to take a walk haha)
I've come to realise over the last few years that I actually really, really like iyashikei anime. Windy Tales and Super Cub come to mind in particular, although what I've seen of Natsume's Book of Friends and *especially* Girls' Last Tour have been fantastic, just to name a few. There are also a lot of series which lean into that sense of pervasive mono no aware which I wouldn't call iyashikei series which are also near and dear to me, particularly the original Kino's Journey, the emotional timbre of which is difficult to describe yet entirely unparalleled.
I really wanted to add Kino's Journey but I knew the reboot wouldn't technically fit in the genre. Is the original series more peaceful and environment heavy?
There is a Yokohama Shopping Trip Anime?!!?!?!??! o.o I read the manga ages ago and it is literally "Serenity - the Manga" to me. So amazing! The nature backgrounds in the manga are... so good. They are only in black and white, but they communicate an emotion that is so hard to describe. A mix of serenity, calm, cozyness, alone-ness... it's a safety that stems not from protection, but from the total absence of hazards. Will probably check out some of the anime you mentioned. :)
WOW thank you for making this!! "cozy maximalist spaces" is like, my life's philosophy haha. and iyashikei is my favorite genre of anime/anything, specifically because they still address heavy topics but in a comforting setting/context. Have you read the Girls' Last Tour manga? the anime only covers 2/3 of the story, and the ending is incredible - it's my favorite manga.
Thanks for making this video. As a busy mom if three with baggage from my past, watching a bit of this genre always calms me in a lingering way. I'll find I am able to empathize more with my kiddos and stay relaxed through chaotic situations that would normally peak my anxiety. Hopefully this video will help others feel that way too.
Very wonderful video today I really needed someone to recommend Anime like theses to heal my soul and heart. I'll buy your T shirt and sweater next year. I love the design I love Anime Manga and tea especially green tea.😌💚🍵
What a gorgeous and thorough analysis! I appreciate you talking about the Shintoism aspect. My mother is from Japan so I grew up both in the Japanese culture and with anime. I ought to check some of these shows out!
I love Hayao Miyazaki's work-- he has the amazing skills to transport the viewer to a world of tranquility and beauty. I feel so incredibly cozy when I watch a Ghibli movie and long to be transported to the worlds of Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service. I also started reading a gorgeous manga called Witch Hat Atelier, which has such stunning illustrations. Yes, there is some conflict, but there's such a beauty to the world and characters that I feel quite cozy at times reading it.
Thanks so much for this video 💕 I really appreciated the focus on healing and resting with the hope of coming back stronger to fight for a better world. I'll be glad to check a bunch of these out as we keep pushing forward
This is awesome I didn't know there was such a genre and apparently I've been unconsciously healing for a while I like to watch arriety, Kiki's delivery service, and mushishi when my work stress me out I'm putting one of this on my partner likes to call it tea time for my brain
is there some kind of weird scandal in like the cozy fantasy genre that I don't know or did some thing happen that suddenly made it popular? because a youtuber James Tullos made a video about he dose not like Cozy Fantasy and even made a really nasty comment of people who like this stuff can't handle conflict and even a bunch of the commenters were calling him out for that comment while someone was dumb enough to not try to even search this term of Iyashikei and jumped to conclusions of it just being a misspelling of isekai. and just a day after another youruber called Tales foundry made a video called "in defense of Cozy Fiction" and there was even other commenters of that video commenting of James Tullos video as if they are at odds. now I am some one who dose not actively go after Cozy Fiction / Iyashikei [the latter though, I have grown up with Muhishi, I loved that series.] but even James Tullo's comment just sounded so snotty and judgmental, like if your gonna comment of that stuff, maybe like aim at the fans of the genre being really nastily intense instead of jumping to conclusions , because if James Tullos made a comment like that aimed at anime fans, they would tear him apart for that crime. I am just so confused about what the heck happened to suddenly have so many of these types of videos online from youtubers that I watch. if some one can please explain to me what the heck happened if you can? thanks in advanced.
I’m not familiar with any major drama going on in the cozy anime or manga space but I might check out James video to see what they’re talking about. I do find that some people who watch Cute Girls, Cute Things series and have those characters as their pfps sometimes say strange stuff. Other than that though the fandom and genre are very chill
@TheAnimeTea thanks for sacrificing your spare time to possible feel a lot of rage you didn't need and I am so sorry that this is how you find out about James Tullos. I like guy when he roasted books but even this take felt bad and judgmental.
TH-cam is just like that. I get tons of drama videos for people I've never heard of. I also get a ton of critic videos that makes every piece of media out there that are negative. It's also my fault because I used to click on stuff like years ago and TH-cam wants to pull me back into it.

The manga got a new deluxe edition release by Seven Seas recently so I hope more people come to learn about it!
I love that you are talking about this, because I'm addicted to natsume book of friends and anime similar to it. I could never put a word to what they are called ,thank you.
I am obsessed with Natsume Yuujinchou. I recently started watching it & it's quickly become one of my fav anime!!

Thank you for talking about this genre in anime and Natsume's book of Friends mentioned, yay!❤
I’m new to Natsume but it’s been the perfect anime to watch this season ☺️

It's a beautiful anime. That show and the op makes me well up, I don't even know why.

Yes! Just a short OVA 2 episode OVA that's free to watch on TH-cam. There is technically 4 episodes but the second part isn't as easy to find.
