The one plus of the older kit is the balloon style tires... The newer kit has the skinnier wheels and an engine and compartment.

Nice review of both. I just picked up the Type 166 and look forward to building it.

You should have fun with it. I'm currently building the simpler one as a captured allied vehicle.

the 70's Schwimmwagen could be good for a beginner or someone who wants to jump in to paint but i agree with you on the 90's kit more detail and better bang for bucks just under 20.00 US dollars can't go wrong might have to order one thanks for the review

the only reason I would buy the older kit would be the chunkier tyres and I do make the figures in most of my kits

Do you know what.. Go with that. You can always go resin on the wheels.. I just don't have the talent to paint figure.. Its something I want to work on.. But I know I can do a decent vehicle... I don't want to spoil it with a rubbish figure.

@@lappin6482 and that's just me... I don't have the skill set for figures at the moment.. I will work on it.. But I see so many bad ones that imo ruin a model. But we will get there 😉👍

They are very popular in dioramas lately

Sadly, I bought the Kfz 120 since it was 5 bucks cheaper and before finding scalemates. That was dozen years ago.

ive built the newer 166 and comparing it to a tamiya kubelwagen im not sure if its smaller or just me

I put them side by side, seems to be only a fraction different.

From afar the Type 166 Schwimmwagen may look smaller because the distance between axles is shorter that Kubelwagen's, nevertheless the full length is slightly longer that a Type 82 Kubelwagen.

Indeed, the 70's Schwimmwagen is a crap.

Yep a very basic kit. Takes less than an hour to build.

Accidentally I've got the old crap one. So I'd got the new one and trashed the crap

Keep the old one as a paint mule 😉
