Sorry this reply is so late, the little wooden numbers correspond to the dotting tool she is using. The DIY dotting tool set comes labeled with numbers making it easy to follow along.

Would permenant marker work just as well as the acrylic pens once sealed?

I use acrylic paints with dotting tools not paint pens. I do not know about permanent markers as I’ve never tried them. I know others in my rock painting group I belong in have, and have heard it runs when you go to resin them. But I don’t know about other sealers etc as I’ve personally never used them.
