    The system looks fantastic! I'd love to see an update with all the bettas in place. It could be really interesting to see how well the fish pop against the black background.

    it's all coming together! a word of advice from someone who has built (and dismantled) one of these because of how fussy they can be: build a bigger sump and include a fine micron filter sock on it so that no junk gets pumped into your drip emitters, those drip emitters will clog every single day without super fine micron filtration. I had rigged mine up with a fully open airline as a return line and they would still clog up weekly without micron filtration. good luck!

    • @Jeromeeb
      @Jeromeeb ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have one of zebra danio research racks and they send the pumped water into a 10" water filter with a micron filter installed, so I'm betting gregs onto something. I'm not always sure more volume is best with these systems if you can autowater change daily, easier to dilute small volumes of water vs large. The danio habitat I have housed lots of fish but is only 20 gallons? Again its one of the University research racks.

    As a hobbyist, I thoroughly enjoy fishkeeping and visiting multiple stores. I can tell you, I don't personally care what the store, and it's shelving looks like whatsoever. As long as the fish and the tanks themselves look healthy, and there's adequate obvious filtration for the tanks I'll regard that store as being a "Good" store. Most places don't have any filtration or water change systems in place for Beta's let alone a custom rack with filters for them. Whether your racking systems look homemade or have a fancy facing on them is irrelevant to the fish's care. Most people in the hobby would actually rather see the plumbing and filtration systems on the racks. I'd honestly advise you pop in some form of view panel for the buckets or a way to show customers that the Beta's have ample filtration for them to be healthy. It's all a learning experience for customers, you could even change the buckets for some form of clear plastic containers so you can show the media the water passes through to easily visually educate new fish keepers on the cycle process.

      @weirdscience6820 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Whilst it may only be temporary until they're sold, the containers look too small. No container will ever be big enough but I noticed a pet shop upgraded to a larger containment system and added decor. Perhaps better to sell less of them than cram them in.

      this is a lot better then what chain stores do. Most put them in a cup and hardly do water changes because they don’t have time. this setup is much better

      This is all true in my book.
      I literally HATE walking in to browse badly looked after fish in tanks.
      Since I was ten yrs old my local was a decent size, filtered and well kept. Never lost a fish as a kid to them.

  • @vincentmah3906
    @vincentmah3906 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I think you should add an elbow and a pvc pipe (pointing downwards) to the inlet, so that the water flows into the 1st bucket filling the bucket from the bottom - up then overflowing to the 2nd bucket. Gives the water more time to filter thru the media before going back to the tank. Great savage project!

    Love the betta rack, a similar solution to the buckets could be a thick plastic storage tote, with egg crate and acrylic to divide the sections. I ran a setup like this on a saltwater aquarium for several years and it was great!

    Love this video. I've been looking at upgrading my very, very low budget diy betta rack. This looks great. One of the only things I've had trouble finding a cheap substitute for are bulkheads. I had to use lids on my rack as my fish escaped a few times.

    The LED strips are really nice for DIY stuff. They're relatively inexpensive, typically around $10 for a 5 meter length here in the US, and can be really bright if you get the right ones. The RGB LED strips don't get that bright if you're looking for pure bright white light, I've used them before. If you want bright, the dedicated white light strips are your only option, the more densely packed the LEDs on the strip are, the brighter they'll be. I used a strip that had a density of 204 LEDs per meter.

    Make sure to buy a box of extra containers for ones that need to be replaced. Too many times a company will change inventory and the containers won't match. Also looks like you have extra space on the rack, so you can get a few larger containers for other fish situations.

    Good job Nick! I did something similar few weeks ago using '5l crystal hinged plastic containers' from Bunnings, but they all become foggy overtime and grow a filthy layer of bacterias and impacted my Bettas with fin rot. I ended up switching to Kmart $20 glass tanks - hope your Kmart containers doesn't have the same issue, best of luck mate 😁
