Dealing with different rafter heel heights | Learning from framing mess-ups

- If you are building your own house or garage, you might run into an issue lining up facia heights. In this video I use a foolproof method, after messing up once, to figure the heel heights of two different rafters so that the facia boards come out even. This is a useful technique for stick framing roofs! My best advice with any figuring is to double check yourself! I mess up enough to know! They key to building good homes isn’t never making a mistake... it’s being patient enough to fix the mistakes you make.

Hey Guys.... great explanation of a complex problem. Mock ups are key to complex roof framing...Not only does it force me to get it right but gets the crew on the same page also. Rarely see anyone do this anymore ..nicely done😊

Would really love to see you go into more detail describing why you’re doing these things and see the actually cuts made and then put in place and nailed off at certain points. I’m a window and door guy so I’m inexperienced with the framing side of the business. Your videos have helped tremendously without me having to go frame stuff myself, and I really do appreciate all of that content brother. But yea I wish you could go at it from start to finish explaining everything in precise detail for those of us who don’t frame every day. Thanks for everything Perkins Bros, you guys have a work ethic and attitude that is both commendable and admirable and the work is always impeccable and outstanding.

Perkins Builder Brothers lol no. I live in Julian Ca about 60 miles east of San Diego in the mountains. I’ve been a general contractor for 26 years, I did all my own framing. I mainly did remodeling and room adds. I found remodeling more interesting and challenging that new builds. I like the challenge of adding new to old. Making the old better and still remain the same appearance. I liked when the customer would have to really look hard at where the new and old comes together

That was excellent. You brought memories back to me from the days I worked for my dad, he asked me a million times if I understood him and could get it done right while he was framing the rest of the roof so the material would be ready for them to keep moving of course I assured him and assured him I got it well back then he bought material one time you cut it wrong you own it put it on my truck and take it home with whomever cut it I got less than a five dollar paycheck that week but I had a truck load of lumber, never made that major of a mistake again man oh man was he mad at me..GREAT memories now though you made me laugh my butt off at myself.
I also agree with the 70 year old carpenter, you guys are good you deserve the credit I have seen some awesome stuff from you guys have even learned a few new things.
I was told last fall I am terminally ill went from man this flu just wont go away to uh oh think I have pneumonia a week later I finally broke down and let my wife take me to the hospital and yep had double pneumonia then the next morning my doctor came to visit me in my hospital room of course and said something I won't ever forget until my last breathe Jeff you have some huge fibers running through your lungs so I am having a PULMONOLOGIST come see you so I ask him what do these fibers mean. I was so sick but am an intelligent man so I started questioning him to the best of my ability being I was so sick he said Jeff I just don't know but it isn't good let's just hope for the best. I somehow knew in my heart it was very bad, the PULMONOLOGIST ran many tests it took a total of about three months to get all the results back (I have an echart) so much of what the doctor see's so do I as long as I am reading it before his office opens and they remove it anyway I read the letter from the radiologist that did some special X-rays on my lungs and was able to confirm I have Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis which is absolutely deadly he told my pulmonologist I have one to three years to live in very rare cases some people will live up to five years but he could see mine was very aggressive so two to three years is much more realistic in my case.
My pulmonary doctor went on to tell me I almost am guaranteed I have it growing slowly for probably five years but did not know it then I started thinking back after the smack down from learning that I am dying with no chance of survival when I realized he was right I did have small symptoms for years on jobsites I would get short of breathe for no reason especially when I spent most of my time being the cut man the last few years I thought I had earned the right to not climb all day long just got tired of it I could walk walls, climb heights anything nothing really bothered me, scared me actually I would get excited getting to build on crazy hillsides/mountains whatever the next experience would be, I just thought after the six years of being an Army Ranger jumping out of birds with over 1400 jumps guns fights etc., building had nothing on the service and still got my adrenaline rushes when I wanted more I had my private pilots license with multiple certs I would go flying whatever.
I am sharing so much of my life with you because I really want to Express just how serious you should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS listen to your body your instinct and feelings when you are not right go to the doctor go to specialist keep going until you get the real facts it's worth it all while I cannot be cured and I am good with the diagnosis I could have extended five years maybe even ten or more years but I am a typical carpenter I will be okay and keep going well the day comes when you are NOT OKAY.
Now I am in a rush adding on to my house making it ready to last for my beautiful wife until she passes her mon is 86 her dad lived to 88 so for her she looks like things will go well for her and my daughter should have a good long life also and I am rushing to make sure I leave my family in a great position for their lives not to mention my four grandchildren and at 58 years old its lots to accept and take in with Jaimes recent HORRENDOUS accident please let that be Gods warning shot to the family take care of you and your family first work next and plan plan plan and work your plans that's the one good thing I did do always worked my plan and for me I wanted a fairly good size business and achieved it found out though family is still the best.
I apologize for making this so long but I have to share my true life story with you God wont let me just share parts anymore he is making me spill my guts even the stuff I would rather not share with anyone..

Wow that's crazy we build pretty much that exact house plan a couple months ago. They had us build it right on the lake. The home owners owned a helicopter an would fly in every couple days to check out the progress. Was pretty cool. We would do some fishing on his personal dock at lunch.

Do you guys jigsaw the corner cut on the birds mouth? I know you don't over cut to make your corners on the birds mouth. You guys do detailed work. Nice video!

going through this now on a big custom trying to match fascia lines 3 pitch shed roof to a 12 gable easiest way i've found is to lay it out on a piece of plywood i've got 2x8 rafters with a 12 inch lvl hip had to drop my header 6 inches for the lvl then build it back up for the rafters
Eric..using 5 1//2 think roof panels sitting on 2x8 rafters..so I'm looking a huge fascia...not sure how to get around it.....Lee
Quick question maybe it got answered and I missed it but do you always over cut your birds mouths or was that simply because they were mock ups? I learned to treat them similar to cutting stringers and short cut and finish with a jigsaw or sawzall.

Man you guys do excellent work. I wish I had the time to make every thing dead on as you guys do. What is your guys average framing time dried in ( framing, windows,ext doors and wrap) for an average 1500 sq foot home?
We put crooked rafters on all the time here in Chicago, we let the roof guys fix it
