I've studied Advertising and now studying Computer programming, I'm a painter, i sew clothes, i am a writer, I've learned English as a second language and keep learning Spanish I can speak some Japanese, I like investing/Finance, I keep reading about psychology, philosophy, neuroscience.. this list doesn't end here. I'm super active with these fields. I've been pressured by my family my friends and society most of the time because of i don't pick one thing and stick to it. I've dealt with depression and so on. Just because of trying to fit in. It's never easy to follow this totaliter system people like us. I'm proud of anyone who can embrace their selves truly and I'm so happy that I can keep learning and learning without having the limits cuz that's who I am. Please surround yourself with the ones who understands you and if they don't understand you don't pressure yourself to fit in. In the end we all are living in our own unique world..

This condition has been a curse for me. We are never happy at settling and want to be all and do all because we know we can probably do it better than others. Kind of sucks...

I am in the same shoes, feels like a curse too cause I know too many things but not enough to get paid to do it. I still practice multiple hobbies on my day off but out of passion. The days that I’m working, I feel like I am a lost talent gone to waste

    • @rsaug

Same here. Instead of appreciating and effectively using this trait, this society & my own family has always labeled me all along that I was a lost wandering soul with no stability in interests.

I walk the same path. I spent years trying to hide it. Now, I am on the way to accepting myself, the way I am. I love being a physician. And also into and exploring holistic healing. Besides, finish and publish a novel in English (my non-native language). Also, being an artist and a traveller when I can. I want to live my life to the fullest.

This is 100% me. I’ve never wanted to do just one thing, I pretty much work on a ton of hobbies and it kills me there’s never enough time to do it all.

Why promote something that's been there all along?
Because society forces people to specialize and focus on one thing only until retirement or death when it comes to careers. Schools are generally preparing people to be specialists. Somehow specialty is regarded as superior. It's the side effect of the Industrial Revolution. Having many interests has been suppressed and somehow considered aberrant, although it's very normal for humans to be interested in more than one thing. People who have many interests are unfortunately seen as scattered and indecisive. I live in a community/subculture where specialty is especially worshipped at the career altar. I've lost count on how many times folks look at me either in a totally nonplussed way at best (as if I had four sets of eyes and 10 tentacles!) or disdain at worst when I talk about my multipotentiality.
So this guy is only bringing multipotentiality back into global awareness and I say more power to him! And he's not the only one doing it, either. There are more and more multipotentialites coming out of the woodwork. That's very encouraging.

There's a quiet rage in me toward the culture for making us feel this way for my entire life!

At least yours is quiet- mine is a seething, drooling, fanged Dragon with extremely large claws. But then again, I loathe the mindset of the dominant culture. Ahem.

Specialization is great *and* multipotentialitism is great as well. I admire my colleagues who are motivated toward one particular goal or who want to delve as deeply into a particular subject as they can. I, however, enjoy being free to explore, dabble, pick up and put down. My line of work also expects a degree of specialization, but so far they either haven't noticed that I don't do that or they don't care. I celebrate the driven and focused folks for their tremendous achievements; I celebrate the multipotentialites for being so interesting and for mixing all the play-doh colors together.

Think of the possibilities available when both options are commonly accepted and taught, to explore and not explore the routine. instead of generally pipelining students to be specialists.. The heights a specialist and a multipotentialite team can reach are great. One with the focus and drive to delve deep in one area, yet be satisfied with the desire for a relatively singular subject / work. While the other can provide a wide breadth of knowledge with insight on adaptability to assist in solving complex and multidimensional problems, even to see if a potential solution is feasible (hence, the specialist). We are in a more diverse world where one person with many perspectives is and should be more highly sought after. It's exciting, to say the least and I hope to see both sought after in the same regard, especially for such collaborations!

As an old Italian saying goes: "Impara la arte e metila da parte", which means: "Learn the art and put it aside". My Father always told me this, but the culture demanded that I specialize in something and I specialized, I specialized in multi-potentiality.

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” -Robert Heinlein

Resonates w/ me totally. Instead of appreciating and effectively using this trait, this society & my own family has always labeled me all along that I was a lost wandering soul with no stability in interests. So I ended up constraining myself to be stuck in Corporate career that I absolutely hate. Now at 42, I am sick & tired of my shackles and just want to liberate myself to do everything

I am in the exact position. A young (general) dentist by profession while having strong loving interest for painting murals, fine arts, arabic calligraphy, graphic design, photography, playing music, electronic music, cooking, and philosophy. I'm learning to reduce them to what matter the most eve though they seem all equally interesting, and trying to find what interests overlap in the sense that they're technically linked to each other. Thankfully, we use artistic sense and photography in dentistry so it's kind of less of a curse now... passion and love really is what meaningfully moves us humans everyday

Hi my name is Noelkinz and I am, An Artist, Writer, music producer, photo editor, video editor, blogger, content creator, web designer, records management, and record label. I found out that if I can mix all those stuff down to one brand I had to create a Single general new term, where all of those passions share something in common so I created something called a Record production studio = A Facility where records are made. this includes writings, (all types of writing including books and blogs) music recordings, video recordings, images, etc. i am currently planing on my brand for that matter.

Do you guys tend to be indecisive about most things? Not just what you want to be when you grow up, but across the board in a lot of your life?
also do any of you have ADHD?

      Yeah atleast i am.
I remember i had to purchase a new laptop as the old one had stopped working completely. It took me 3 whole weeks to decide which one id wanna buy
I wanted the best bang for the buck. Id start researching on the internet and comparing the specs. And it was then when i realized it fully how my indecisiveness about even the most petty things is going out of control.
So yeah after the realization ive started learning to cope with it

Because multipotential people are dangerous for system because system want people to watch TV and to go to job that you don't like, also being multipotentialle gives you a lot more awareness about world than for person who have only one passion
