Me playing bass and I also did the audio mix for broadcast.
I seldom post anything of me playing live, but playing with Lukather and Williams is a highlight.
I use my charcoal grey jazzbass. Caveman preamp and compressor.

I agree. I reckon Steve Lukather is one of the most underrated guitarists. He is technically excellent.

She is brazilian, born in Rio de Janeiro (like me 😉 ).
She has an extensive formation and experience with several renowned music schools and orchestras all over the world.
And, of course, she is dazzlingly beautful! 🤩
I love your bass lines, you’re just as modest and supporting as Mike Porcaro was. Same feel as far as I’m concerned which is pretty damn great! Mike Porcaro was an amazing bass playerplayer, as are you! ❤

Still can’t believe how good Joseph Williams sounds, he does a great job with Africa. I know David Paich sung leads on the original and Bobby as well but he seems to be able to just as good a job which is difficult. Over the years he probably has perfected it. Congrats on being a part of this band and event.

For the past few years Joe has been under the training of an operatic vocal coach. He has warm up regimen before each show that he follows religiously. His voice seems to get stronger every year.

I fully agree. His voice and power is incredible and I have the feeling it gets better year by year.
Are we really listening to the same guy? The first thing that struck me when hearing Can't stop loving you is how poor the singing is. Africa is pretty much the same. It's more like yelling the vocals which is sure sign that the voice is gone.
The orchestral connection is just incredible. They are so loving this!

Great job guys! I found some parts of the concert couple weeks ago on YT and immediately thought about how great the accompanying band was. Total pros, tastefully arranged, perfectly prepared. If that was for single event, it's unbelievable how well it all gelled together. I've heard those tunes many times with different Toto lineups, but this is just a class 👍 Enjoyed it a lot 😊

I only see Lukather and Williams. I don’t know where this was but anyways…Toto is an extraordinary band. We all know Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon also as some of the biggest bands in the 80’s, but Toto (in my opinion) is something else. Extremely talented musicians and producers. The quality they put in every single songs in their records it’s amazing. These guys are not only musicians, they are music teachers.
Yes correct. All other original members, Hungate, Kimball, all 3 Porcaros are either retired, sick or not alive anymore. Everyone that came after are session musicians. Like us.
The body of work that Toto did and the members is legendary indeed, unparalleled.
Must have been a great gig to experience. And if it is you Rogier that boosted guitar a bit at 8:59 - then yes!!!

This must have been a helluva experience! Gotta say though, the slow tempo is killing the vibe... Compare same song on previous Night of the Proms where it swings like crazy.
Yes it was a great experience.
We play everything with a click track. Same tempo as it’s always played by Toto.
So that could be perception.

Wow! How did you score both bass and audio mix on such a great gig?
I am curious about your approach to the inclusion of the audience mics. Do you mix dry first to get presence from the close mics and then include audience mics? Or do you include the audience mics from the beginning and form the mix around them?
By the way, I agree with another poster that the orchestral elements are a little hidden at points, and I look forward to your Germany mix. Will be subscribing and waiting for that :)

I’m a bassplayer first. But in 2003 I already was pretty handy in mixing in the box more or less. So I was a lot cheaper then the multi million € studio where they mixed before. So I recorded and mixed this since then. In 2006 the bassplayer who was a really great player but with a drinking problem fell asleep on stage during the Mike Oldfield set.
So they asked the year after if I want to try if I fit, it did. So timing is key. Although I regret the death of my predecessor, he was a lovely guy and very musical.
I mix dry and mute and unmute the ambience. I also shift it in time and cut lowend to keep everything as clear as possible. I choose a bit more band and less orchestra in this one. Some times it’s the other way round.

Well, that's a great sounding broadcast mix which is not a usual thing. Typical bradcast mixes are totally flat with barely any effects on vocals. You can tell the bass player mixed the performance because you can actually hear the bass :D

We rehearse 2 days in a studio ‘ish’ environment.
Then 2 days run through with the first gig the same evening.
The day after broadcast recording like this clip.

Jammer inderdaad dat er nooit wat uitkomt op Spotify ofzo.
De VRT heeft maar beperkt interesse denk ik en een Vlaamse act zoals clouseau gaat dan toch voor Toto.
De SWR zend bijna alles uit. Dat ben ik nu aan het mixen. Zal wel rond september uitgezonden worden.
‘Smooth’ was ik ook op bas en mix. Miles wordt gemist.
