The Aleuts are actually another native people from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. The Russians, and other Europeans brought Aleut hunters with them. Also, Ghalas-at is just the Chumash name for it. Her people are known as the Nicoleño
@ Emily Steller, If you read the book carefully, you'll note that she is the last surviving member of her tribe. A lot of the men died in the fight and the rest who escaped were caught in a storm. They did not survive the voyage, which makes her time on the island pretty special.
They died? But in my book it says that it sunk soon after it reached his country, so doesn't that mean Karana's people arrived on land, but their ship sunk while still?
years ago i remember that this was actually the book that got me into reading. in middle school everyone in my class were put in groups of pairs and we had to read a book that was assigned to us. my group partner was really bored by it but i ended up loving it. after i read it i asked my mom if i could have a copy of my own because i loved it so much and she bought me one. that is when i discovered my love of reading.
Btw this is based on a true story! The book is sort of fake but it's not! Read ALL of it! Like the last pages! It's really cool/sad :(. Great report by the way! I give it alike!
Great video! My Son's favorite novels are about surviving in nature - Holes by Louis Sahar, Oasis by Jim Harrison, If we Survive by Andrew Klavan and Just Deserts by Eric Walters. I think the first two books would be ok for ages 8 and up and the second two for ages 12 and up.

Wow so I read the book up to the part when the people come to the village to transport them and I was doubting at I'd ever finished the book at the end of the week because I was in page 30 something thank you so much now I can actually do a book report summary and Mrs. Grogan if you find me, hello
uhm....it's just a story....it wasn't designed to teach cultural Marxism focused on the so-called "winners" and "losers".....rather just a story primarily about survival....
This is not a story about gender equality. No matter what she had to do to survive, she did so because she had to. She learned everything the hard way. Humans developed gender roles as a means of survival. She survived by herself, difficultly. It wasn't easy. She didn't flourish. She was barely surviving in a hut on the beach. If she had the support of the entire village with the job specific gender roles, her life would have been much happier and fulfilling. Sadly, she spent her life alone on that beach, and when she finally was taken to be with people again, she died of dysentery. I think her life was tragic. It's not a celebration of women's equality. That woman probably wanted a man around more than anything. This story is fictional, based on a real woman. Humans who have to actually contend with nature to survive understand gender roles and approve greatly.

Wow! You didn't follow up much on this story! She was eventually picked up from the island by catholic missionaries that treated her as an amusement. She ate too much fruit plus was exposed to diseases that she couldn't fight including dysentery. She is buried somewhere around the Santa Barbara Mission along with hundreds of other Native American slaves that were considered unworthy of a decent burial. Heathens in the Catholic eyes. Shame on them

Great summary but the one I read sounds different then that i heard karana was trying to kill the wolves for revenge.
