I grew up in Southside Queens during the crack era. I lost my cousin to gun violence. My uncle to drugs. And my stepson lost his biological father to gun violence in Brooklyn. At this point in my life I love my Black American people but I avoid the hood and all its people who love to act ignant.

We alll know all races technically have their own version of ninjas. Some white people call them white trash. Like (don’t come at me) Honey Boo Boo type of people. Now I personally don’t like saying it but being black myself, I have noticed there are distinct mannerisms each black people have. I was just raised a certain way. To carry myself a certain way. Some black people don’t give a damn and unfortunately black people are stereotyped because of this. Just saying.

I picked up 2 women in the hood as a Lyft driver a few days ago. And I ended up with a drink thrown in my face and the other women launching at me. They came in my car being really rude and started talking about me in my own car 🤔 as if I couldn’t hear them. I drove 2 minutes up the street and pulled to the side and politely ask them to exit my vehicle and that I felt unsafe. I was essentially being bullied in my own car. I have been doing Lyft part time for 6 years maintaining 5 stars. I’m a black women lyft driver it was very traumatic. I never had to do that until a couple days ago. I’m from the hood too. But, at some point your get educated and grow. It was disgusting. They lied and said I was drinking while driving smh. My account was on hold for investigation. Thank god I called in and they seen my track record and quickly restored my account. I mentioned to them by the end of this month I may no longer be apart of Lyft the guy was essentially begging turns out I’m one of the top lady Lyft drivers here in Atlanta. I will not be doing any rides towards the Mercedes Benz stadium (across the street the houses). Thank god I was safe it was so saddening to experience.

My experience: Not from the hood... religious, parochial school upbringing. As a HS requirement it's either the 4th year religion studies or community service, so I took the latter. It was one of the best experiences I had because it taught me a lot of things about life, people and being of service. I was sheltered. And although I toggled afterwards between corporate America and underprivileged communities, the latter was the most fulfilling. Sure, there's a handful of knuckleheads, but for the most part I endured more issues outside of the hood, than in. Inside the hood, there was a sense of respect, appreciation, protection. Word gets around before you arrive, so it's important to treat people with respect.

I paid my dues to the hood. It is not the same now. House broken into 3x, car stolen to the point my insurance was cancelled. Folks still standing on the corner, can't get into the store. Folks running up on you trying to sell you stuff they stole from sone one else. Nope, I good . I live in a small retirement town. Yes it different, took a minute to get use to, but I sleep thru the night, no police sirens, no fighting in the apt over me, car where I park the night before just peace. Saving a bunch of money. No fine dinning or store to shop. Have drive 8 minutes cross state line to do that. I just look at it as an adventure. We do gave Penny's, Walmart and Kroger and some fast food spots. When you reach a certain age all you want is peace. I am 2 hours aways west and north of major cities in the state and 30 minutes fr om a major city cross state line. Hood, I don't really miss it.

I have always said that a person can be from the hood without a hood mentality. There are many successful black celebrities amd people who came from that background. Even New Edition came from the hood, yet are one of the classiest acts in show business. However, I blame a lot of the glorification of the hoodlifestyle on rappers. They actually promote the hood mentality. Like ,it's a thing to be proud of ,instead of a mentality to strip away. Then they own it,like it's a black thing.

I grew up in a neighborhood of elderly people, quiet, black neighborhood. When I made friends with someone who lived in the "hood," I was in for a rude awakening. A car would just stop in the middle of the street to start chatting with someone hanging out on the street. Don't care how many cars behind them. I dared not blow my horn (I've heard stories of people who paid a price for doing that). People hanging outside on their porches and on the sidewalk. I'm not used to that in a neighborhood.

I know when it is time to move around with my own. Fn around with 'them folks' though, I could very easily end up as the meat they are serving up (especially since I am naturally seasoned 😊)
