While Messi and Ronaldo may not have the same impact as Maradonna did on a collective level and as you said every kid knew his name, but at the end of the day statistics say otherwise. Yes, the footbal today is way different than back then and more safe (from what I remember breaking legs was a norm everywhere until the 90's, Maradonna himself having injuries) and he was firstly an entertainer and then a professional footballer. I think that's why people treasure him more, like Elvis he was addored by everyone. But the rock became more popular and complex after him, the same can be said about football, now it's more tactical, faster and overall better. But what Maradonna couldn't do is pushing the limits, breaking records and thus inspiring younger generations to be better and that's what Haaland and Mbappe being the flag beares for the new generation. Not that Diego didn't inspired Messi and his generation, but pushing the limits and doing the hard work push the football forward and make it for better or worse more complex and interesting.
