Can a Gumotex Rush 1 be paddled with sprint technique?

  • Training my paddling technique in a Gumotex Rush 1 inflatable kayak. It's still possible even with a kayak this wide (but with some compromises).
My first update on my paddling technique this year - state for Spring 2023.
I made this video to see how well (or rather how bad) I'm doing and to spot as many errors and areas for improvement as possible. Everything you see here is self taught and trained. Everything of course is work in progress. It's far from perfect and it will take time to hone.
    Errors identified:
    - Catch frame overstretched to the sides due to kayak's width
    - Still too little torso rotation and too much arm movement.
    - Paddle blades are not always fully submerged - loss of paddling power - this time it might be caused by kayak's width.
    - Right paddle strokes weaker.
    Corrected since Autumn 2022:
    - Positioning of top arm and bottom arm has finally stabilized and is not chaotic anymore.
    - Paddling in an active position.
    Can you see anything else?
If you're a sprint instructor or a sprinter watching this video, I'd like to hear from you what needs improvement (aside from things I managed to identify on my own).
    Thanks for being with me,
    Tom

Looks awesome already, I think your observations are correct.
Few more remarks: too much wobble. Your spine should be in a fixed postion, just rotating but not bending to sides. Your paddle does not match your height (arm length) and boat width. Only like 3/4 of blade actually is pulling water! I would use longer paddle with shorter blades - this should also help with posture. No shame in using long touring euro paddles with such recreational boat!
Hard to tell from this video, but I do not see much arms work. Torso and leg work is most important, but it is fine to use your arms as well. Catching hand just drives paddle in water, but opposite hand should push, creatling lever effect.

At the moment my kayaking wallet is empty and I can't allow myself to get a touring paddle... 😥
I tried different settings on my Epic Small Mid Wing too and 215cm + 60deg feather seemed ok - I might try it out during an upcoming community paddle.
Wobble, yes. That's my core muscles still being too weak to resist the forces and I spill quite a bit of power here. It can be seen much clearer in my Autumn update, especially on the left stroke (which is also more powerful).
There is a sprint/training inflatable kayak coming out in July and I'm hoping to get it ASAP to continue my training in a more appropriate way (that's where the kayaking wallet money is reserved for). 😉

@@LetsGoPaddling That paddle is awesome, just not for this boat. It would be glorious with a race kayak. But paddle does not make paddler great. Greenlanders used flattened stick :)
I do not see how sprint inflatable kayak is possible. Walls and bottom need few cm thickness in air boat, this makes the thing relatively wide and high. Round bottom, needed for speed, would be very difficult even with drop stitch. And even if technically possible, I do not see business case. Sport kayakers will always prefer hardshell, recreational will prefer more stable, wider (albeit slower) boats. But I feel your pain. I am on the market for portable, day trip touring (too old for sport...) kayak for open water. Inflatables are too slow, clumsy and susceptible to wind, folding boats take too much time to set up. So I found me a rental service, they provide ok-ish touring hardshell kayaks. Not ideal, but best solution for me.
Anyway, paddle the way that is fun for YOU and enjoy your precious time on water the way YOU like.
I love your enthusiasm, and find it very motivating. Thank you!

I'm the best business case for that upcoming sprint boat... an amateur who is learning/training and doesn't have any space to keep/store a hardshell. Itiwit Race500's dimensions will be 517x54cm and from what I understand the hull design is dual concave so that less experienced paddlers (me again) will most likely manage to stay up on it and maintain speed at the same time. 😅

Hey! you need make your paddle longer. Due to the boat's width and short paddle the blades do not submerge fully.

Thanks. I settled at 215cm for Gumotex Rush (it was set to 210 in this video) and the both the summer 2023 update as well as the overview of the x500 kayak corrected all remaining errors. 🙂
