Only Tim Rogers can make me click on a video about a game series I never played, probably never will. And make me watch it to the end, with interest. And then make me do the whole thing again after a few months, at a time I should definitely be doing something more important. And love every minute of it.
Crackdown had the sandbox, but it had no soul. Almost no story. Driving wasn't that fun. There's only so many times you can make a giant pile of cars to blow up before it gets boring. What crackdown DID do right was make the best Hulk game ever.
Its unfortunate honestly. I grew up playing games like San Andreas, Vice City, Simpsons Hit and Run, and Saints Row 2. With that said, something like Crackdown was straight up my alley. I got it in late 2013 when it was one of the free games with gold. Crackdown felt like as if the design philosophy of total gameplay freedom and fun had never died. I was blown away and couldn’t believe I hadn’t played it sooner. Fast forward 6 years later and here I am having the same amount of crazy fun and it was something that I have missed so much. I missed it when open world sandbox games would let you do whatever the hell you wanted. Later Saints Row titles got boring for me and I can’t really get back into GTA 4/5 or even Red Dead Redemption 2 for that matter. They all feel so restrictive in comparison to the mayhem I can cause in Crackdown 3 and I suppose this is a product of me just not liking where the game industry is heading in terms of open world games. I just hope that this series continues because I love these types of games too much to see them go away.
A few years back there was an article on Kotaku talking about making a conscious effort to move away from clickbaity articles in favour of quality game content. I gotta say, you guys have really delivered on that promise. Kotaku is bringing some of the best gaming journalism these days.
I love this video, it’s so funny whether you’re watching the b-roll gameplay, listening to the narration or pausing to read the stuff on screen. The anecdote about being offered to work for Microsoft I think was my favorite part. That or trashing Fortnite (even though I like it).
Update crackdown 1 and 2 are free on Xbox live right now and the DLC's are also keys to the city for crackdown 1 and 2 and the toybox dlc your welcome friends!
Crackdown was indeed a masterpiece and I wish there had been a Tim to keep the flame alive much more than what we've gotten. Tragically I have no Xbox One so even if the third one does deliver I'll be left out either way. But in the meantime at least there are great videos like this.
Some inside info... Both Crackdown and Gears of War had to battle for marketing money, which ever game was released first would receive the bulk of the MS money and get game TV adverts etc. Guess who won! This is the reason why the Halo 3 beta was bundled with Crackdown 1(or the other way around!)
I loved all that wordplay at the start! Your videos are always a treat, Tim. Also, i had no idea Crackdown 3 was coming out so soon. I sure havent seen much hubbub or marketing about it.
I never recall anyone thinking it would beat GTA. Though that said I love Crackdown. I think its more comical over the top stuff made the future possible for Saints Row. GTA>Crakdown>Saints Row I think the biggest downfall of Crackdown 3 is going to be the fact they advertise "destructible environments"..... online only. Ouch. Then again the world won't end for me if I don't see that in single player. I love the game. I love chasing down the orbs, no matter how annoying they are to get. Varying suits, cars...etc. Love it!
Man, your Sony-Microsoft monologue followed your phrase "I was born stupid. I will not die hungry. Video games for forever. Kotaku dot com." always gets me. Keep on being entertaining, my friend!
I love the fact that this guy can be overly humourous in his points and excessively serious next minute, yet he makes it so entertaining and you can't help but agree with him. I've loved Crackdown ever since its debut. Simple, yet enjoyable game from a studio I'd never even heard of before. I only wish I could say the same about the sequels.
Even though I've watched this video a countless amount of times, the silence at the end really messed with me because I just got way too high. I thought I went deaf
"You better *believe* I'm going to cackle like a CLOWN while *I* Crack it ALL down." I would love to glimpse the parallel universe where Tim actually became the rapper trapped in his video game essay punchlines
It's interesting because RTW also made a perfect free-to-play game before free-to-play was considered a viable business model, so unfortunately it was subscription based and its production bankrupted the company.
I will add the one thing that I hated about C2 was the weird virus that went around turning civlians into a Flood/Zombie like swarm. It was annoying. Hopefully they won't make that mistake again.
Ohh the memory’s. I’m hopefully getting the Xbox series x and it might be the first game I play on it. I remember coming home from first grade and my dad had the Xbox 360 for me. It was a used one but it introduced me to mw3 and other games. I couldn’t remember the name of this game so I researched and their it was. The crackdown was downloaded straight to the Xbox and it lives in my head rent free 😭
I’m so glad I stumbled upon this video cuz I tried playing crackdown on my xbox one a year ago and it didn’t work. Now I tried it and it did work. I was even able to get the 2nd one for free
I remember, once I was just walking on a very tall building and I reach the next level of agility and a shockwave hit me as my character roared ... the shockwave pushed a civilian off the building. It was hilarious
I’m in the minority that loved the first crackdown, crackdown 2 was a huge disappointment simply because of how lazy it was, but can’t wait for crackdown 3 after it’s myriad of delays.
Why do you think you're in the minority? Crackdown was an incredible sandbox game that most people loved. It had that Breath of the Wild freedom all the way back in 2007 where you could tackle strongholds in any order or take out specific ones first to make others easier. Yes, Crackdown 2 was awful and Crackdown 3 will likely be just as bad but the first game was and still is a brilliant superhero game. Don't mind the lads saying it's bad, I doubt even half of them have played it.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care just seems everyone hates on it but it’s one of those few games I still go back to. Fingers crossed for crackdown 3, can’t wait to go searching for orbs all over again.
Nah you're not in the minority dude, I enjoy Crackdown a lot for its freedom of letting me do what I want to do. The second game was the same but it wasnt a real sequel but more of an expansion. Crackdown 3 though looks the same except it looks polished and looks like it has some variety in terms of what you do in the game. I will be sure to get Crackdown 3 day one and have a ton of fun testing out the new power ups.
Crackdown was all about the simple joy of stacking a pile of 30 cars in the middle of the street and blowing them up. It was the kind of player first design that's very in today but 10 years before everyone had gotten sick of boring linear "cinematic' games. Though having said that if this game came out today when we've had these advances in player first design and open world design it'd seem pretty spartan and cheap. Which is why crackdown 3 worries me, because it sure looks spartan and cheap.
well i got this game for free from xbox live store few months back. i have tried it and enjoyed i think it still holds up in some way and not really in others. but it has no story you cant compare that to gta cmon
Before vid. If back then vs gta4? Said this recently from comments in F&F (yep I’m making sure it’s still related to that name, no pissed fanboy can deny it.) hobb and Shaw trailer. Because in gta you feel “gangster” meaning pinp your ride, gain “respect” with npc and beat anyone that disrespect you, outrun the police and say fuck the police to them, and more. But kinda pointless now since with what I point out in that F&F trailer the franchise for gta has become superfied with power ups, mods, crazy weapons, vehicles etc. basically the dream of being gangster in those games is dead.
C'mon now Kotaku? Just look at how much money T2 spent on the GTA franchise and MS have been nickel and diming Crackdown development costs since CD2 Microsoft will never spend enough money on new franchises or at least not spend money wisely. They Hire studios that have no experience making a type of game to develop or they rush developers to put it out as fast as possible. You can see better production values on Saints Row games than on Crackdown that is a first party franchise. There are many other reasons too but those are the main ones
Because there's no story or polish. It's like asking why KitKat bars didn't kill steak. One is empty fun and the only at least pretends at more. Microsoft still doesn't understand that throwing money at the problem doesn't buy gamers. Good games do.

I like how we learn a little bit of Tim's life in every video while watching a fine chilling gameplay somehow related to the topic
@theone Andonly That's mean, dude. I'm genuinely curious about why you hate the guy
It’s like playing Dark Souls
I loved the title VerticOps so much I was not ready for it to be dethroned by 2100 Jump Street so soon.
Tim Rogers COULD have saved Crackdown!
We need special thumbnails or something to know when it's a Tim Rogers video. I came dangerously close to not clicking on this.
They have one now!
Does anyone know the name of the piano song that plays at the 1:00 mark? I can't seem to find it anywhere

I agree with you on the first part, but the best Hulk game was Ultimate Destruction
But it did had a plot twist
Tim Rogers would not only have saved Crackdown, but possibly MS itself!
Tim Rogers is a National Treasure. We must protect him at all costs.
