When setting up my streaming PC it gave me a lot of hassle and research to do.
At first I thought "huh, I have an Elgato HD60 Pro in my main rig, and spare PC parts from upgrades... let's make a streaming PC!"
In my head, using the HDMI from my main PC to the capture card, then using the HDMI output on the capture card to my monitor would be the least of the issues. I am getting a video signal, and it's recording it so what could go wrong?
Well here's a list of things I researched and eventually fixed:
    - I want my mic plugged into my main rig, and to talk to my friends on Discord through my main rig.
    - Having desktop audio split to my headphones AND the second rig.
    - Using the HDMI output on the capture card locked me to 60fps (when I use a 144Hz monitor) and introduced noticeable input lag.
    - Using a dedicated HDMI to the capture card, and two cables plugged straight into the monitor. How would I duplicate the DisplayPort and HDMI to the capture card and keep audio?
    - Using RDP prevented me from using an external 3.5mm aux in and optical in. And I wanted to keep RDP because it allowed me to stream my mic natively while plugged into my main rig.
    - Creating the least hassle possible (i.e. using only 1 mouse and 1 keyboard for both rigs, file transfers, and generally making it seamless and quick).
    - Fixing x264 lag on an i7 6700k which is more than powerful to handle x264 at 1080p 60.
    - Getting video, audio (mic and desktop duplicated), and file transfers to all be duplicated to both systems with no fuss or pre-setup.
It took a bit, but I can now happily just turn on my streaming PC, launch a remote desktop and stream straight away with NO side effects. I can record videos and access the file instantly on my main rig. If anyone is having ANY issues with setting up a second rig just leave a reply. :)

+Techquickie Using NVENC to send the video signal to another computer on your LAN to transcode it there to a streaming bitrate is indeed a good option to avoid a capture card. But: What is the recommended setup here? As far as I can tell, you need an RTMP server to receive the pre-compressed content on the transcoding machine (e.g. Nginx with RTMP module) if you want to get the signal back into OBS, transcode and transmit to Twitch or whatever service. Are there other options, like using FFMPEG for transcoding? Both options kind of worry me, because I have no clue how reliable it would be. When I tested a low latency setup with Nginx as RTMP relay, OBS lost the incoming stream quite easily in case of a CPU spike or other events that occur every now and then. Or the latency varied each time. Additional latency in general is a huge problem IMO. Twitch is currently rolling out a low latency option and I've seen streams with 2.3s of total delay to broadcaster. If transcoding adds like 5 extra seconds because of buffers on both sides plus encoding and network, then that is not really a good alternative to an internal capture card and a powerful CPU to do everything on a single machine.

Nothing you say applies in Pakistan. Here normal users get 2Mbps and heavy users have 4Mbps connects at a whopping 25$ per month. If you want 10 Mbps or above you have to pay a minimum of 100$ and a hefty setup cost. Those who have 4Mbps have a practical upload rate of 0.5Mbps. We literally live in the Dark ages thanks to bureaucrat and bossy generals running the show. I was asking for more content related to streaming a while ago , but really really really this is not the way. WHAT are you talking about ? Dual PC Set up ? Shadow Play ? It really does look like this video was brought to us by INTEL.
Forget about 1080p 60fps (actually , what the hell) and forget about your second PC dedicated to streaming only. Throw some benchmark from some games that are ANY relevant on twitch (was that Atila total war ? are you guys kidding me) and FORGET ABOUT shadow play (one button does it all means no way to tweak the output)
FOR BEGINNERS : Dual ENCODING setup: H.264 (CPU intensive but crispy , 3500 kbps tops) for anything that is not CPU intensive and NVENC (here you can go up to 6500kbps with no meaningull performance impact ) for everything else (PUBG ,OW ,DOTA2,LoL) (set up on OBS Studio ,forget , AGAIN about Shadow Play)
This is how I've been streaming for over 2 years. No upgrades needed before hand. Everything I know comes from something I read on the internet and my own testing. This video feels rushed AF
(I still love y'all , but stop telling people they need to expend money to start to do something when they dont and the video is not even sponsored by any of thse companies.)

I tried streaming Overwatch on my Acer VX5 (i7 7700HQ, GTX 1050Ti, 16GB of RAM. Yeah, not the most ideal setup but I wanted to see how it'd go). Capped fps at 70 not to stress the CPU, software encoding was terrible even on low (~3000kbps) bitrates. When I switched to NVENC encoding it was flawless even on Twitch's max quality (6000kbps). I mean, it's an entry level GPU beating the crap out of one of the most powerful laptops CPUs whilst running a game, what gives?

You can completely transcode with your GPU, for those who has a 4 core CPU and struggles with streaming. As long as you have a GPU better than a 1050 ti, depends again what you want to stream. Usually games like Fortnite, CS:GO, Overwatch, League of Legends can be streamed on a 1050 ti, but it will be quite hard for the GPU, so get at least a 1060 or an RX 570 or better.

I appreciate the Video, but I think some of the wording might give people a wrong impression.
While a setup of 2 "enthusiast" PCs (one minus the GPU) is indeed superior to a single high-end gaming PC having to handle both, using 2 machines is usually a much cheaper option.
Also, I think you severely underestimate some old Hardware or overestimate the demand for a "average" Streamer.
For once, you can only count on a variable resolution feature on Twitch, which requires certain criteria to be met. According to Twitch's FAQ, about 0,85% of the streamers are partners. So if you'd stream at 1080p60, a lot of people with slow internet (or data limits i.E. on Mobile) won't be able to watch your stream.
Also, old CPU like the Xeon X3440 / X3450 are perfectly fine unless you go crazy with the settings.

a 1070/1080 coding with nvenc can look pretty good when using restream.io and then sending to twitch, and or using ftl on mixer. you dont need a high end cpu for a second pc in this method. Magewell and ELgato have good 4k Capture cards. Sometimes i wish they would do a proper series on building rigs in different scenarios. Such as... audio issues, capture cards, using cpu and gpu encoding, creating your own transcoder, etc. there is so much half ass information out there that it leads people to spending way more then they really need to. Also, twitch has upped its bitrate as well. Believe it or not, but i find that i get better picture on twitch by not using twitch's ingest servers and instead use restream. I dont know why it looks way better than the potato output that twitch does for non partners but it works. its a serious option for free that people should be looking into

CrazyWeeMonkey well yes, I know because I stream with NVENC a lot. And to do that, all you need is 15Mb internet (lower values in Russia means living in a cave where you don't even have a PC) to put like 8-10k bitrate. It is unquestionably cheaper than buying a beast CPU, not to mention near to no performance cost at all compared to x264

Linus, CPU encoding your stream is so 2016. All Nvidia GPUs starting from GTX 900 gen and up support excellent hardware stream encoding. This means you can stream at 5500kbps, 1920x1080 (or greater!) at 60 fps with NO CPU OVERHEAD. I am streaming World of Tanks which is super sensitive about CPU overhead, my fps went from 70-90 to 120 by simply switching from my Xeon 2687W 8c/16t to a GTX 1070's built-in hardware encoder. Plus, while the Xeon certainly could not handle streaming at steady 60 fps output, the GPU does.

But for games such as WWII or Battlefield One, 720 with 32bit sharpening still looking incredibly sharp and doesn't impact performance. It happens to look just as good as 1080p anyways :p

  • @ShikuTeshi
    @ShikuTeshi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Forgot to mention GPU encoding as a cheap option if you don't wanna blow extra money on a higher end or new CPU. Almost all moderm graphics cards have the ability to stream using their own processing power instead of your CPU without any noticeable impact. This also comes with the benefit of freeing up threads that could be used for other programs in the background such as, other than your game, voice chat, stream chat, music, and cat videos. While CPU encoding provides a higher quality stream, it has to be set fairly intense with at least 4 physical cores to get the edge over GPU encoding quality. That means 8 threads become unusable for other things. So while you can scratch by with a 6-core, the quality compared to GPU encoding while maintaining playable framerates isn't worth it.

tbh the Ryzen 5 1600x doesn't seem to do too badly either.

If I was building a system with streaming in mind, I'd go Ryzen7 1700 instead, because the price gap is worth it in my opinion, but you're right, the Ryzen5 1600X (or indeed non-X) is a very capable chip as well. Before you take purchasing advice from me though, do bear in mind that I'm the kind of guy that preordered a Ryzen7 1800X at full price, so maybe take it with a grain of salt... :p

Robert Faber true the 1700 is the r7 bang for buck I'm lucky to have gotten a 1700x for the same as a 1700 (maybe even just slightly more expensive than a 1600x)

I'm current streaming pretty well with the 1600, I've only had an issue with a couple of games, but I think it's because they are poorly optimized and some of my settings.

Would you do a more in depth episode that dives much deeper into this subject? I would really appreciate it. :-)
