Listen to him speak at Loyala (that's easy to find on youtube) and you'll see exactly what I mean. That's a great interview at Loyola, btw.
As you get older your voice goes deeper. A youthful voice often has a higher sort of spunk. Plus there is wear and tear on the voice casue he sings. Singing could age the voice quicker.

Blew my back out when I was 26/27, and my life was dramatically changed forever. I fell into severe alcoholism, which only made the situation worse, especially when the drunkenness wore off. I know people deal with much worse, but spinal injuries are extremely painful and debilitating! I’m glad Phil was able to kick the hard stuff!
