I've never really considered that Cortanas "solution" was a trap by the Gravemind but why else would there be a message from her on the only flood ship that got to earth
she might have deliberately sent the ship there, or knew a ship was going so got a message on it somehow

The current Gravemind holds the memories of every previous Gravemind, including the Primordial so I'm pretty sure the Gravemind of Halo 2 and 3 knew EVERYTHING also. Again, not entirely correct and accurate

Mendicant Bias was aboard High Charity, him and Cortana even had some interaction while she was trying to stop Truth's ship from launching. Mendicant Bias could have indirectly told her about the Ark and what it does. also Cortana is the one who leads Chief to the new Installation 04B after killing Truth. I believe Installation 04-B was her plan. "without firing the remaining Halos" she knew that if the Covenant opened a portal to the Ark that the Flood would follow with all their forces to stop the rings from firing (by also manipulating the Humans to do so). So to stop the Flood they only have to fire one ring because all the Flood would be on the Ark, therefore not firing the "remaining Halos"
That's actually really clever. I'm not sure which theory is correct but I really like them both.
Another solution for "why didn't Cortana mention her 'solution' when chief recovered her" is just that she'd been tortured and messed up and all her memory had been rearranged, literally forgetting about the idea she had
But somehow she knows exactly what Chief is talking about when he asks her "Do you still have it?"

I had a problem with this theory and went to research it for a response. This theory appears to not take into account the story 'Human Weaknesses', the story of Cortana's time with the Gravemind, which details that she does in fact send the message. While at first I could not determine where she learns of the Ark, I believe that it is part of the information she recovered from Installation 04 during the events of Combat Evolved. Your current theory of Halos and the Ark that they have alternate uses seems to also hold true for the Index. The Index is kept separate from the monitors except in transport due to the knowledge they contain. Cortana gained her knowledge of the Ark from the archived data that she carried from Alpha Halo. The immense data is also referenced during FIRST STRIKE during her scenes in the story as she worries that unpacking the total knowledge would lead to a faster descent into Rampancy.
Cortana is wrong to assume that the Gravemind does not know of the Ark and the portal on Earth. The Ark portal was revealed to have been discovered by the Prophet of Regret during a H2A terminal. The Gravemind had consumed the prophet and would know that Earth was where the portal to the Ark was. Cortana was either misled or simply made an error.
The Line in question is on page 399 of Halo Evolutions, "She needed backup. She triggered one of the copies to create a message to HIGHCOM, a few urgent words about the Flood heading for Earth, the Portal that the Gravemind didn't know about, and that the way to beat the Flood without firing a Halo ring lay beyond it - the Ark." The story is still quite vague on what Cortana's plan is. It was frantic as she fought helplessly against the Gravemind. She may have fallen for a trap laid by the Gravemind to lure John to fight the flood on High Charity, but he did not fabricate the transmission. Cortana may have assumed that there was another way to contain the Flood on the Ark, but I don't know if she knew that a new Halo was being manufactured.
TL;DR: It would appear that for a couple of recent theories, they haven't taken into account details from the Human Weaknesses short Story. Cortana did send the message and it wasn't a fabrication by the Gravemind

The “solution” was using the index from the first Halo ring, to fire the replacement. It’s obvious. When Cortana said “there’s a way to stop the flood without firing the rings”, she was talking about using the replacement installation which was not yet connected to the array. The only question is, how did she know about the replacement?
That’s a plot hole on Bungie’s part but Cortana must have been in contact with mendicant bias, or learning information from the Gravemind. But if she learned it from him, I doubt that he would’ve been so surprised when Chief rescued her and the index is revealed.
There's cut dialogue of the gravemind in halo 3 that heavily alludes to Cortanas' message being a trick, fooling the gravemind into taking his full force to the ark so she could just use the new halo on him.

I've played Halo 2 and 3 at least a couple of hundred times and I never thought of it that way the Gravemind was an absolute genius
Cortana somehow gets a physical recording of herself aboard just the exact ship that slipped through the blockade of high charity and jumped to earth while being in the stations compromised networks surrounded by gravemind tentacles.
Question, what ever happened to offensive bias? I know he defeats mendicant and delivers him to the ark, but after that what does he do? he still has a small fleet of ships and is a super ai... it would be interesting to see him come back and fight against cortana

I quite like this idea. Making a deal with an ancient potentially rampant AI during a time where AI are all potentially evil. Almost like having to make a deal with the devil.

Well, while I think this is a interesting theory, according to some comments of this video and the halopedia, the solution of Cortana was in fact Installation 08. Also in the halopedia there are some elements of this video that are explained there, with some other minor factors that just require a bit of speculation. I think that the real question should be how did she know about Installation 08, because apparently she was the only one who originally knew about the ring, not even Gravemind knew about it.

I thought it was revealed that Cortana wrote the message, but the Gravemind allowed her to send it, leaving her to think she had sent the message without Gravemind's knowing.
I agree. In Halo: Origins we hear Cortana say, "There is a danger in secrets. Both in seeking and in knowing. Some things are ment to be hidden from view. You see some mysterys defy understanding, and sometimes the things we think we know are untrue." While this dialogue is playing we see the Gravemind give the Chief an A.I. chip presumably with Cortans in it. We didn't see this in Halo 3. The Gravemind wasn't in the room with Cortana. This could mean two things. One that the Gravemind LET the Chief rescue Cortana. The second is that in Halo Infinite the Gravemind gives the Chief the Cortana we hear in the secret audio files.
Also, what seems like a blinding beam coming from the Ark, and a devastated landscape behind it...

Don't know, but the part that i qouted was basically Cortana giving a summary of the events of human hustory while stuck on the Forward Unto Dawn between Hgalo 3 and4.
Origins is Cortana's INTERPRETATION of what occurred, so some bits she imagines, and others are out of order, say. But the creator's commentary track suggests there is some foreshadowing hidden in it.

i would like to put out there that cortana said a way to stop the flood without firing the REMAINING halo rings not without firing any halos which means firing installation 08 is possibly her solution as firing that installation would kill the gravemind and the rest of the flood on the ark could be dealt with by the arks defenses

Mendicant Bias wasn't exactly on High Charity. The forerunner ship was sent to the San shyumm or however you spell it by Mendicant but he wasn't on it itself.

I think I’ve solved it. I simply listened to the compilation of gravemind quotes for nostalgia, and he shouts “she baited me with lies! Bought me here to seal my doom!”
You know I just now noticed that he changed his closing sentence to "Find peace in the Domain" from "Now go rest your brain"
We need to look at it from the origins of the Earth Portal. It's possible the Librarian while supervising the construction of the portal, made it lead to other destinations than Installation 00. Given certain conditions, and a specific Forerunner KeyShip, some may be able to go to a different location, maybe a shield-world, where the Solution to the Flood would have been found and/or hidden by the Librarian.
The only thing is, how Cortana would have known about the Portal leading to different locations, maybe she would have guessed it, she's been familiar with forerunner technologies and strategies for years in 2553.
It's very likely, if she was evacuating various species at widely spaced areas of the galaxy, and funnelling them to the Ark. Presumably closing off other destinations as the Flood drew nearer.
If High-charity contained information about the Ark it's likely it also contained basic information about the function of the installation, Cortana has also been
exposed to far more information than 343-Guilty Spark, which has already been confirmed to have his knowledge limited to prevent leaking it to the enemy.
Secondly Cortana was very specific in her wording "Without, firing the remaining Halo rings" which excludes the soon to be remade Ring in the Ark because it wasn't operational as of yet.
John isn't dumb, the second he saw the rebuilt Halo he would have figured out it was Cortana's solution hence when he asks "Do you still have it" he is presented with the Index to fire
the new ring. Cortana isn't confused by his question, she knew what he was asking because that was the her plan from the start.
Lastly how did the Gravemind find the location of the Ark? He had no way of knowing where it was located, the obvious answer is Cortana told him to lure him
to the installation to be killed by the firing of Halo. The Profit of Regret was a fool who was manipulated by Truth, remember he also had no idea that Earth was the final location of humanity
and Truth tricked him into attack to get rid of him.
Humans and the Covenant were already all in one place which is Earth, had the Gravemind already know the location of the Ark like you suggested then he would have simply destroyed it or taken control of it the second he had High-Charity which as you pointed out was outside the firing range of the other Halos.
Question: before guilty spark told the Cheif, Arbiter, and Johnson that the firing of the unfinished ring would destroy it, why did they want to fire it?
It was far enough away from the galaxy to kill off all the flood and not do too much damage to living beings.
Alfiero Dibona honestly that’s a good question, I don’t think the flood could even mobilize considering they lost all sorts of space travel capabilities and the only thing that could kill them had to be complete and basically could just be controlled by the monitor and his sentinel all while just idk, waiting. The ending could have been better and different had they wait with the Shadow of Intent, fired the rings, got out, and killed the flood. Damn... w t f.
high charity is about 500km long the ark is around 100,000km end to end and had the manufacturing capability to make a halo in a few months i doubt even an entire high charity worth of flood could overwhelm the defenses also firing the halo array does not kill lower flood forms but it does kill graveminds

2 unrelated questions...
1: how long does it take to build a halo? The games take place over a few months right? So unless there was some kind of foundation of the superstructure of a ring within the forge that was just sitting there in the event that a new one needed to be built, do they really only take a few months to complete? I get that it wasn't complete it looked close, maybe 60%? I guess the other potential answer is that the replacement ring was meant to be constructed and released into the galaxy but it never was and construction stopped once the array was activated?
2: how did the flood survive? Shouldnt the pulse from the incomplete ring have killed all sentient life? We never saw the shield be put over high charity's remains before the firing of the incomplete ring.

If the Forerunners had a way to beat the Flood could they have done Cybernetic implants with micro machines that eliminate the Flood cells and consume the Flood turning them into machine material?
Problem is the flood super cell cant be cured or changed. They tried to compose infected forerunners to potentially put them in new bodies to cure them of the flood infection. But the flood super cell runs much deeper than that. Becoming part of their DNA. So when they got their new bodies they became infected again

They tried this in Halo Primordium (book) and it had limited success. At least on those long term affected.
You know how the ark keeps a unfinished ring in it's forge all the time, why was the Halo ring in Halo wars 2 fully completed unlike the ring in Halo 3. Doesn't that mean someone had to finalize the ring?
I think what it means is that the Ark tries to have a mostly complete ring ready to be finished up. But knowing about the timelines tells us that the ring we see in Halo 3 was probably only about 50-75% complete, based on how much scaffolding was still in place. That ring had only been under construction for about a month or two(the time between Halo CE and Halo 3) Were as the on in Halo Wars 2 had 3-4 years to finish up. I think the Ark keeps a ring at 50% completion until one of the others gets destroyed, then it finishes the ring it has in the forge and launches it, either automated or by command(Professor Anders)
What Cortana said was “without firing the remaining halo rings”. If you recall back to halo CE 343 guilty spark says “but, once the other installations follow suit, this galaxy...” and what 343 guilty spark explained that if one rings fires, there is a failsafe the makes all the rings fire, it’s why it’s called the “halo array”. That’s what cortana meant her comment. She knew the flood would try to rebuild on the ark, out of range of the halo arrays, but the gravemind didn’t know that another ring was being created. Her plan was to fire the ring without the failsafe firing all of the rings.
Without firing the REMAINING Halo rings. Inst. 04-2 wasn’t one of the remaining, it was a new one rebuilt by the lesser ark.
She said "without firing the remaining halo rings" instead of "other halo rings" because it would imply there was another ring on the ark thus the gravemind wouldn't fall for the trap and follow chief and arbiter through the portal.
I never actually noticed that there was a solution proposed in the first place... Shows how much I pay attention

I think Cortana in her wisdom knew that by making sure that John followed the Covenant through the portal to the Ark forcing Truth to accelerate firing the all rings from the Ark and therefore forcing the flood to head for the Ark and stop the Covenant instead of aiming for Earth, which would keep the flood just on the edge of the galaxy away from Earth

I think it was to find mendicant bias.. i feel that when we went to the map room guilty spark found out about him. He was talking about why the ark was built around the small planetoid but then he says "oh my" and almost freezes.
And we know mendicant is buried there
Although this is a well made video, I have to strongly disagree. Cortana specifically said without firing the *remaining* Halo rings, rather than not firing any rings at all. You'll notice that Cortana immediately knows what Chief is talking about when he asks, "do you still have it?" because this was her plan all along.
Also, some cut Halo 3 dialogue confirms this. Cortana says, "If you didn't destroy the first Halo ring, this one wouldn't exist. There wouldn't BE a solution," and chief responds "...Almost like you planned it."
I know cut audio shouldn't count as canon, but it absolutely indicates that Bungie always intended the second ring to be the solution she was talking about.
I mean Cortana said we can stop the flood without the remaining halo rings. If she knew about the ark then she knew it can create more halos, and the fact the ark is outside the firing range on the galaxy all we needed was one ring. When Chief asked “do you have it?” she should’ve been confused like “have what” but instead she already knew what he was asking for

Honestly I think it's just a loose end created by Halo 3's level-to-level writing. It's not good by any means and even installation 08 firing to kill the flood made no sense since that's NOT what Halo rings kill, they kill the flood's food supply.

To my comprehension, the rings DO 'kill' the HIGHER forms of Flood, by breaking apart their organic hosts and scaffolding, but NOT the Flood SPORES and maybe not the Infection forms either.

If the gravemind already knew the exact coordinates of the ark, and figured out that the covies were tying to active it by infecting regret,why didnt he slipspace there after taking afterr high charity? Why would he go to attack earth?

The theory is interesting I have a counter though. What if Cortana's whole plan was that the Grave Mind would know of her message, think that there was a solution on the arc, and then rush to the ark without dispatching floods in other areas in order to stop humanity or the covenant from activating the rings. By making him go to the ark with his entire force, when they fired the rings it made it more likely that they would destroy most of not all of the flood. Cortana knew he was listening and the "solution" was the new ring all along and the message itself was bait.
Why would the grave mine want humans to go to the ark when he knows only humans can activate it. If he knew about it ahead of time he would have much rather have gone there first dealt with what covenant were there and then proceeded to take over the rest of the galaxy at his leisure.

I don't know, it seems to me that Cortana intended to fire Installation 04's replacement. She doesn't mention her solution when Chief finds her, but if her solution was the new Ring then it would make sense that she doesn't, because the first thing Chief says after she recovers is "Do you still have it?" referring to the Index. And she immediately knows what he means, which to me at least implies an understanding that he wants to fire it. Sure, she says there's a way to beat the Flood without firing the remaining rings, but she was being technically truthful, at the very least; they fire a new, singular ring that's disconnected from the network and out of range of the larger galaxy. I'd say it abides by the spirit of that statement, at the very least.
How could she have found out about the Ark and its function to replace destroyed rings? I don't know. Maybe there was something about it on High Charity, maybe it's a plot hole and she shouldn't have known. But I will say that Spark not knowing about it doesn't really mean anything. Like the clip said, he has detailed knowledge about Installation 04 and that's about it. Not knowing that the Ark will pump out a replacement for his installation makes sense to me, in the view of compartmentalisation, and his lack of knowledge implies to me the opposite of what it seems to imply to you.
I just want Cutter, Red Team, Anders, and the rest of the Spirit of Fire brought into the primary storyline.

I’d bet that the Cortana message was created by the Gravemind in an effort to find and get to the Arc. Where, presumably, the flood would be safe.
What do you make of Mendicant Bias vanishing after directing John to Requiem? (Which initially looked a lot more like the Iris Nebula). This is the biggest plot hole I've found in the entire series, and the only way I can find to justify it is "because Halo 4 says so"
I assume he's still buried on the Ark, beside the bit that escaped into the Covenant dreadnought/Keyship. Or maybe he recompiled all his parts and escaped on that ship? But then, who opened the portal to the Spirit of Fire years later?

I even have reason to believe he killed Penitant Tangent (or at least allowed him to die) on High Charity to gain internal systems access to Installation 05. He's completely unstoppable, so there's no reason to believe he couldn't keep up. As far as I can tell, the writers haven't come up with a reason for drifting ships to teleport in and out of the Milky Way, even though Halo 3 set up a perfectly good one in the terminals

Why couldn’t Cortana have gotten the information on the Ark’s ability to create new Halos from Mendicant Bias during the period of time that she was in the High Charity systems, but before the Forerunner Dreadnaught took off?
Always figured it was just the stupid amount of sentinels. With the number of sentinels and prometheans there were leftover, I’m pretty sure they could’ve contained the flood outbreak there

Itsca physical object which contains the protocols and forerunner coding necessary to activate the halo. She basically copied the data and wiped the original.

I have to disagree here. A, Cortana knew what he meant when the Master Chief asked if she still had it, meaning she knew he was asking about the index and therefore knew he would need it. B, the Gravemind wouldn't need humanity to go to the Ark, and would want to prevent it. If no humans were on the Ark, it would be able to be used against him as it was, so he would want to dissuade humans from going there.

It may have been her belief to send chief and as many humans to the ark to protect them from a flood victory or halo detonation like we see her trying to put in the cryptum in halo 5
