I think this is a great repair! I own my own construction company and can recognize quality work. I have seen others get an old license plate and screw it into place and others get slabs of sheet metal and weld them on while looking awful. This mower deck didn't structurally fail, it just rusted out. If fiberglass will stay in a car repair rumbling down the road and sometimes the whole car, this repair will work just fine. When I repair something I want it to look as close to the original as possible, this repair does that. People making comments like "it's metal for a reason" and talk about someone "losing a foot" don't have any idea what they are talking about. There will not be exploding shrapnel flying out from under this deck and the repairs were on top anyway. Some people cannot recognize a quality repair when they see it. Great video!
Thank you!! Thank you!!! I’ve proven that this repair worked because I use this mower every week. Here in Florida the grass grows year round and the soil is mostly sand. It is still holding up. I’m not saying it will last forever but nothing lasts forever anyway. Some of these comments come from people that are speculating but never have tried the repairs themselves. Wow, what a wonderful restoration. The way I look at it, this is a permanent fix. With the fiberglass, Bondo, and all of your proper preparation, I would think it will last for years. I repair Yard Equipment and the Mowers that are badly rotted, are often from owner's that use lots of fertilizer. It seems to eat up the steel and even the Commercial Alloy Decks over time. Thanks for educating me on restoring a Mower Deck. Again, Nice job! Cheers!
Fantastic, thank you! I saw rust holes thru my mower deck today after mowing. I may give your repair a try, but my previous attempts at fiberglassing have been ugly. Yes the 90 degree heat is a culprit. Sets off the curing too fast. Boo-hoo to the complainers. You did great and explained great. Previously I tried coating under the deck with automotive undercoating. Nope, I don't recommend that. I have been repairing things for 70 years and won't stop any time soon! It is a philosophy.
@@Chocaluvr I intended to use your repair method, bought the FG repair kit. When I cleaned and sanded the underside of the deck I realized there was no hope. More hole than metal. I looked online and found a replacement deck for abt $120. Surprised me, it was a perfect fit. When I got the mower reassembled, I sprayed the deck underside with heavy protective enamel. WOW, you did an AMAZING job! This is the 3rd video of yours I have watch. So far, I LOVE how short, "QUICK", & to the point they've been. NOT dragging on & on, & ON with a lot of technical jargon. Tell me what to do, how to do it, how to be safe, & with quick 1 sentences (2 @ the most) explanations. Highlight important steps, especially areas to be safe, again with "Quick" explanations, for example, this stuff doesn't work that way, read more about it on-line if a person chooses. For another example, for the vast majority, people heard of "water-soluble" so in my opinion, people don't need to go on for an additional 5 minutes explaining water-soluble & why. If those 2 words confuses someone, we all learn different, they can look it up & learn about it their own way. TOO MANY videos drag on & on as we watch a person struggle to unscrew a bolt or ramble on about nothing related to what we want to know! I especially like how you utilized typical tools, equipment, & items any person might have around the house; Highlighting the effect you were seeking. You did a tremendous job & it looks great!! Realistically, ½ way through a reg. Mowing season, most will NEVER notice any imperfection unless they enjoy being an asshole🤣😃

I have the same mower and had similar problem. I did weld mine, but watching your video I was fascinated at the outcome..You did a great job. Will definitely try your process in the future. :)
Try coating it with RP-342 military grade wax / cosmoline coating. The forums say it lasts about 2 mowing seasons. I'm going to try it. I'm getting tired of messing with it and touching up the paint every six months. I saw one guy had his galvanized. That's a thought.

You did an awesome job. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth doing that to my John Deere D105 that rusted out with 35 hours on it, or selling it as is and letting someone else fix it. Tractor still runs good, but the deck, SMH I bought a huskivara to replace it.
Look for a used deck, you can even try decks from other models in the same production year. I found a deck off a lx188 that dropped right into my gt262

I wish I had your confidence. I really need to repair my lawn mower that has rusted, because I fear it is unsafe, but I don't think I am capable of all this. :(
If you are able to get someone to weld it, it’s better. In my case, the welder told me it was beyond a welding repair. I couldn’t find a replacement mower deck for it, new or used, so I resorted to doing this temporary fix until I could find a permanent solution. The temporary fix surprisingly lasted a good 14 months. It was beginning to show some tiny holes in the repairs and I didn’t want to repair it again. It probably would have lasted me longer if I didn’t live in Florida with sand for soil and it literally sand blasts it every time I mowed. I retired my mower due to discontinued parts and bought a new one. Good luck! :)
@@Chocaluvr Unfortunately I don't have anyone to help with anything. I try to do stuff myself, but usually give up in the middle because I just can't do it...maybe I got my money out of the mower. I bought it about 5 years ago, but haven't used it regularly because I have had a lawn guy off and on...anyway, I know what you mean about Florida because that is where I live. I have plenty of sand kicking up in my face!
Hello Matt. It’s been only one month since I did this and so far it’s been holding up very well. Only time will tell. Florida soil is very sandy and mower decks are sandblasted every time you mow. It will wear down even new mower decks.
How long did your deck last, I live in Largo. My John Deere D105 only has about 40 hours on it. But it is 5 years old. I think I'm going to bottom paint my new one, seems washing it out just makes it rust faster.
@@dog0311 my riding mower is 15 years old now and I mow for about an 1-1/2 hours every week. Do the math. The rust began about two years ago when I began to wash it- big mistake!! I should have continued with just cleaning it without water. When I get around to replacing it, the first thing I’m going to do to the new mower deck is to treat the underside to prevent rust, and wet grass and mud sticking to it. There are several products out there that you can use. I would still sell your old mower as is and let the buyer decide.
@@Chocaluvr I never washed my Troy Bilt push mower and got bad rust as in holes. I washed the underside 4 times in 3 years. After mowing, i removed wet grass from the underside. Rust anyways. Perhaps Troys are made with thinner steel these days. I have an older one with deck 100% intact. I repair my current but have older desk as a spare.
Nope. This thing is older then the moon. I got it for $150 on Facebook used of course but it has no manual or stickers 😢 thank you anyway. Great job on your deck
You made it look good but the mower deck is metal for a reason. Could not and would not recommend this as a fix to anyone. The blade tips on a mower travel around 175mph . Bondo and fiberglass just won't provide the reinforcement nor support the structure of the deck in the event you hit something with the deck or cause it to flex
I not only made it look good (unintentionally) but made it functional as I intended. It's supposed to be a temporary fix until I replace it with a new deck or mower, as I stated on the video, which I don't think you watched it through. I am not recommending anything to anyone: read my disclosure at the beginning of the video. I made a video to show how I resolved the problem temporarily on my mower deck. It has been providing the "reinforcement" and "support" for the past 9 months and I have hit something with the deck without any problems so far. I check the deck thoroughly every time I use the mower and it has held up so far. Why don't you make a video of your own and stop trying to discredit and trash other people's video. Have a nice day!

It’s so thoughtful and noble of you to think of others losing a foot and discrediting my repair while you’re at it. Do you think I made these repairs to cause anyone to lose their foot? I don’t want to lose my foot either. It’s a video to try to help others that are in my situation. I leave it at their discretion if they want to do this. The results speak for itself; it has worked for the past 9 months, there’s the proof. But like I said, it’s temporary; it’s not meant to last a lifetime, nothing lasts a lifetime. You took a piece of junk mower deck and made a terrible attempt at fixing it. Buy a welder or have it welded and done properly. Finally if you still have two brain cells left, your pitiful attempt at repairing a mower deck for YOU but I didn't and I wouldn't recommend anyone following your nonsensical attempt at fixing it. If you can't handle that than take a long walk of a short pier and take your crappy mowe deck with you when you do!!!

I saw another TH-cam used graphite spray paint on bottom to keep grass from sticking and easier clean-up. Looks great what you did
I tried auto undercoating spray to keep grass from sticking. Not my best idea.

My JD started rusting at two years. Not my Grandfather's company any more. Sold his 1950 tractor in the 80's and it was solid. Looking at Husky's.

I’ve never heard of carbon fiber mat. I’ll look into it. So far, it’s been holding up. It’s been 14 months since I did this.

The mower should have a sticker label with all the part numbers on it. If you can get a hold of a manual, it should also list it there.
