The STRANGEST CONTROVERSY of the 1979 NFL Playoffs

  • Imagine the NFL telling a team in the playoff hunt that they likely have no shot at making the playoffs. Well, in 1979, that's exactly what happened with the New Orleans Saints, as despite the fact that the Saints were literally leading the division, they were barred from doing something that every other playoff contender was allowed and mandated to do

    You understated the futility of Saints' history to that point. No playoffs. No winning seasons. Not even a .500 season. Not a single win ever on Monday Night Football. That Raiders game was deflating for more reasons than you'd think. This team finished 8-8, but this included 4 games we'd choked away, so 12-4 was in no way unrealistic. This was the team Hank Stram had built, but he was fired by the worst owner in NFL history before he had a chance to see things through.

      You mean 12-4.
      And, while I respect dearly Coach Stram, losing to the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers sealed his fate.
      Although, Archie being hurt didn't help Stram.

      @@DolFan316You're probably correct. Houston led Buffalo 35-3 but that was in the 3rdQ. Saints were up 31-7 part way into the 4thQ. The Bills mountain was bigger but it wasn't getting dark yet. The sun was going down on the Rams. I was a big Rams fan until they moved to St. Louis. I had season tix for 9 years. Then came Kurt Warner. And how could you not like Kurt Warner? Dude's making $5.50/hr working graveyard at HyVee Market. We can all relate to that. That team racked up yards and points like a pinball machine. Yeah the Saints up 31-7 were now reeling 31-28. If the Rams can just hold them and get the ball back with 1-2 mins. they can tie it or win it. They can't be stopped. The defense holds. This is going to be great finish. All right get a good punt re t t t t wwwwhat he ffffumm NOOOOAAAHH! That's not how that game was supposed to end. The Ram offense was supposed to get the ball and they either tie it and it's OT, win it or they don't. But for God's sake everyone on the planet outside of NO wanted to see what would've happened.

      @@bbigjohnson069 I actually couldn't stand the '99-01 Rams, but even I considered that Saints win to be tainted and knew they got lucky. Yes I admit it, I was that guy who didn't like Kurt Warner. His backstory seemed cheesy and contrived even by Hollywood move standards, not to mention the statement it made about a college graduate who couldn't get a better job than grocery stocker. And something about his wife got on my nerves too. But yeah, that offense for 3 years was something else. I thought the Dan Fouts Chargers were as good as it got in the early '80s but the '99-01 Rams were better IMO.

    And one year later, this same Saints team was on their way to 0-16 before somehow finding a way to beat the Jets in a game at Shea Stadium that even though it was a sellout, WCBS-TV (Channel 2) in New York refused to televise (instead airing a Cardinals-Eagles game) that led to that game only airing in New Orleans. Such a situation I believe was never allowed again.
    I'd love to see JG do a video on this situation that happened December 14, 1980, the Sunday after John Lennon was killed.

    Even if the Saints made the playoffs in 1979, their record may not have been good enough to host a playoff game. Same thing if they won the NFC West. Back then, division winners were not guaranteed to host a playoff game. They wouldn’t get this distinction until 1990.

    • @richardstephens5570

      The way the playoff structure worked in the 5 teams per conference era (78-89) was the 3 division winners got a bye and the winner of the wild card game would face the #1 seed in the divisional round while the #2 and #3 division winners faced off.
      The exception to this rule would be in the Wild Card game winner and the #1 seed were in the same division; then the WC winner would face the #2 seed.

    • @aaronholcomb237
      @aaronholcomb237 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With only 3 divisions, the lowest division winner played at the second division winner on the road by that point. Seeding started in 1975.

      I am a Dolphins Fan and in 1979 the Dolphins won the AFC East title but because Pittsburgh and San Diego the other division champions had better records Miami had to wait for the Denver- Houston wildcard game to see whether they would go to San Diego or Pittsburgh in the playoff game the next week. Houston defeated Denver 13-7 which set the Dolphins up for a painful cold 34-14 loss at Pittsburgh in the playoffs the following week so @americanidol30 you are spot on about division champions then not automatically hosting playoff games.

    This was a heartbreaking year for the Saints. I remember that Raider game. It was a Monday night game. When the Saints went up 28-7, i stopped watching and was getting my clothes ready for school the next day(6th grade) When the game was tied, i went in my mom's room and watched the rest of that game(Raiders won 35-28)🤦🏾‍♂🤦🏾‍♂ . The Saints also had a heartbreaking loss to Atlanta in OT at home.

    I very unfondly remember that Redskin game. In the end, that was the killer game that kept them from winning the NFC East that year. Well that, and the ref denying the Skins a last second FG attempt with 0:01 second left in the finale against Dallas.
    In any case, the real reason for the Saints turnaround then was that they actually started playing some defense. The offense was already there, but they had historically bad Ds. It seemed that when they went to the Flex, things improved. Just not enough on that Monday Night game.

    This is very similar to what happened a decade later with Wimbledon and their remarkable run to the FA Cup Final. Prior to this run, Wimbledon was largely known as a club that quickly rose through the Football League ranks from 1978-1986 when they reached the 1st Division that year, then barely avoided relegation the following two seasons. The 1987-88 season in the league was unremarkable for Wimbledon. However in the FA Cup, Wimbledon went on a tear knocking out the likes of Newcastle & Watford en route to a semifinal vs Luton Town. Because of this run, Wimbledon's ticket office was already preparing for a possible appearance in the FA Cup final. Then like in this situation, the FA told Wimbledon to hold off on selling tickets largely because officials believed that Luton would thrash them mainly because Luton were the better team on paper & had a better league position. However Wimbledon pulled off a shock 2-1 win over Luton & what makes this even more crazy is that the FA told Luton to start selling tickets for the FA Cup Final to their supporters so those tickets became totally worthless. Wimbledon in the FA Cup Final then pulled off one of the biggest upsets in English soccer history by beating a historically good Liverpool club 1-0 thanks to a penalty save from Dave Beasant & goal from Lawrie Sanchez.

      @robertwilloughby8050 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You weren't too bad in league, either. I think you ended up 7th or 8th, which for where you had come from, was admirable. The FA were talking out of their arse, of course you had a good (maybe not great, but certainly good) chance to beat Luton (who won the League Cup that year), and it should have been a level playing field. You're quite right to be a little salty about it even now.

    I'm not gonna give the NFL a pass here. Hindsight doesn't absolve the NFL. The league should've applied the same protocol to the Saints that it applied to anyone else in their situation. The NFL didn't have that energy for my Buccaneers, who had to beat the Chiefs at home in a monsoon here in Tampa in Week 16 just to win the NFC Central and clinch their 1st playoff berth.
