This to me is the cool thing about these Chinese Malmsteen Strat copies---anyone who has one, despite the pros and cons about owning a copy, loves them and isn't too quick to get rid of it. Why, because they are great guitars. Fit and finish, sound, tone, amazing playability, build, etc. make this guitar worth A LOT more than you paid for it, and ultimately a good guitar with all those qualities make it s great guitar. And for all you who say it's an okay guitar...for a copy, I'll hang it on my wall in my music room" I say I'll call B.S. when I see it. Your going to call all your buddies to come over for an all night blues jam and you know as well as I do that your Fender copy will be the first thing to come down and the last the next day when all the hangovers have finally gone home and you have to clean up.
So lick your wounds and put that pride in a back pocket because we ALL know what you're going to say once you put that axe away, "Damn bitchen guitar!"

A cheap upgrade i will do is to replace the magnets on the pickups for a staggered set of alnicos, a steel bar on the bridge, an a Bourns Pot for the volume, probably under $10 dollars

great video hank....I enjoyed it. How do u like the scalloped neck? was it hard to get used to? Im gonna grab one of these..they are so cheap. I like the stock pickups. Whats the backing track???
Hey thanks Ricky! I don't really care for scalloped necks anymore. Regular fingerboards stay in pitch better. I started playing scalloped boards when I was 15, I'm not sure how easy it is to get used to them. I made the backing track myself. 🐻👍🏾
Looks nice Hank. Unfortunately, not all Chenders are created equal. Mine has an exact match pickguard to fender with the exception of the neck cut. I found out when I did my plastics swap, that the damn neck is a solid block 22 fret without the fretboard over hang and matching neck cavity route. So I can't just swap necks in the future or even the pickguard, without notching it back. But it is a YJM, as is, so it's all good. And mine has the HSS routing. I do love pups though. Sounds better than my MIM.
Cool er6nman, Well the pickup size difference is just the pole spacing I believe. Yeah, I guess different companies make their own version of these.

I’m curious if the Fury pickup system would fit this guitar? If I’m not mistaken the Fury’s come as a complete pickup/pick guard package. I’ve got two of the Chinese Malmsteen guitars and a 2021 Fender Malmsteen model (real one). There’s a large, drastic difference between them, but the Chinese copy may be a better way for a beginner wanting to test the water with playing on a scalloped fretboard. It would be great if Squier did a less costly version of the guitar.
On import pickguards, sometimes a little plastic has to be taken off with a file or Dremel. Duncans fit a Fender replacement guard fine.
I have just bought a Chinese Stratocaster ,I hope it sounds that good.

It will probably need to be adjusted (set up) in order to play well. If you don't like it, try a Ibanez. Even the cheap ones play nice. Good luck learning. 👍

I do not know exactly. I never tried to change the neck. I don't have this guitar anymore, so I can't measure.
i am in china ,this kind of guitar is under 100$ , you can choose the body, the neck, all kinds of st tele style. shipped just from the factory for just one.

And by way of a P.S.
While I am the first guy to support the copyrights etc. of the owner, builder, etc. I WILL also say that it's a little hard to hear all that when the big names have nearly priced themselves tight out of business (think Gibson). What can the average guy do working minimum wage while lusting after a $3,000.00 guitar.
Another side of this is when You Build Your Own Copy, a "partscaster". You're using everything with the Fender name/logo on it, from the neck with Fender, etc. already on the headstock to the bridge saddles and everything in between. Pretty cool strat you built, huh. You bet it is, and, oh yeah, Fender isn't going to make a dime off of it either. So if there's some debate some place it will end in a draw: buy a copy or build a copy, a copy is a copy is a copy. If you love it then don't go around apologizing for it just play the hell out of it and dig doing it. And if Leo Fender is watching from up on high, I bet he's thinking how humbling it is to see all these people making incredible music and doing so on his design!☮

Thanks, I honestly don't remember what I was playing through. It was probably the modern Marshall amp pluggin that comes in Logic Pro... With compression and EQ in the channel strip... I was also using bias amp and overloud th3 at the time. I don't remember which one.
How is the guitar from Aliexpress? I am planning buy Telecaster style from Aliexpress. I don't know anything about it. Price are cheap. Can't make decisions
Honestly, this guitar is ok. I would buy a Harley Benton from Thomann. Thomann has higher quality guitars. Less buyer risk. I won't buy from China again. Look through Thomann's Harley Benton. I think they have Tele style guitars.

This video is a few years old, be careful buying from China, I don't know if the exact guitar is still available. Or if they still put logos on them.
All you have to do is swap out the bar magnets from the pickups. I prefer Seymour Duncan so I use alnico 5 polished bar magnets I get from eBay for a few bucks a piece. Something to think about.
Yeah I've heard about that. You can press the pole pieces out right? 😎👍
@@HankCoffey you don't even have to mess with the pole pieces. All you do is take the screws out of the back of the pickup gently pry open the pick up exposing the bar magnet pull the bar magnet out and replace the bar magnet with the same polaritie. If you take your time it should only take about 10 minutes. There are plenty of TH-cam videos out there showing you how to do this. Its very inexpensive and easy to do. Premium sound with a budget price.
@@bigvevil cool. I have 2 strats with cheap ceramic single coils. I think the 2 ceramic bars are glued straight to the bottom of the pickup.

No, they are cheap Chinese covers. That is the correct size though. 49,50,52 👍
@@HankCoffey thank you bro, I didn't find anything that says measures. I won't buy the fender covers because of your video but I don't know if the Dimarzio's one for hs3 are in that specific size. Have you got a link or anything were you bought those covers?
@@MC-uj7tv NO, Dimarzio HS3 covers are extra tall. Those are stacked single coils 52/52/52. They are also too tall for normal single coils. Just search for the measurements 49/50/52 covers on eBay. These are just the cheap Chinese cream covers. Expensive covers won't fit. This is of course if you have the same guitar as this one.
@@HankCoffey thank you brother, no I don't have one of these yet, I'll buy it soon because I want to try the scalloped neck without spending thousands of money (here in europe a Yjm strat costs something like 2500 euros and I prefer wasting 170 euros instead of that, I'll probably love it because I tried a graduate scalloped classical guitar and I loved it but on electric I've never had the opportunity). Last question, you had more than 12 yjm strats right, tell me which sounded better hs3/hs4 or fury? I don't know there's people that say that are identical, others say hs3 are better, for others Fury are the best one and I don't know. (I didn't have the opportunity to try them)
@@MC-uj7tv No problem man, The Seymour Duncan YJM Fury is the best sounding single coil I've ever heard. The Dimarzios are clean and sterile sounding. Good clarity. But the feel of playing them is lifeless. I used these pickups for years in my 20s. And toured with them. I don't like the Dimarzios. If you want a quacky, warm, nasty single coil bite... YJM Fury. If you want clear as a bell, low output, with lifeless dynamics. Dimarzio.

Why does everyone on these cheap malmsteen guitar vids have the pickups set so far away from the strings? If they make too much noise can't you use a noise gate?
It's probably the middle pickup only. A lot of Strat players lower the middle pickup so the pick doesn't hit. Yngwie and me both lower ours flush with the pickguard. It's not a cheap Strat thing.

I don't buy into pickups anymore. Most of the debate is just that. Debate. If you like the sound good. These companies in US are robbing people that don't know any better. Becoming brand snobs. It's not their fault. We started all that in the 80s. Lmao. But back then we had to buy high end or you got shit. Lol
Yeah making a pickup isn't rocket science anymore. Same designs for over 60 years. I think the Chinese are able to make a decent single coil by now. I will say they do have the 60 cycle hum though. Would be nice to have quieter pickups, but I ain't spending $200 on pickups right now. :)
@@HankCoffey shoot.... you can get a set of noiseless singles for not a lot. If you want American made check out Planet Tone, if you want CHEAP imports Dragonfire has about the best price right now..... or GFS.
Thanks DaddyO, but I honestly don't think the pickups you are recommending will sound better than the stock ceramics. You can't buy the hype... I've tried GFS pickups and they sound horrible. I'd probably get Duncan YJM furys if I changed them... But like I said, I am not buying them right now. 🐻👍
@@HankCoffey yea.... GFS is real hit or miss, that's why I dont mess with them often. Lol. I just put some Furys in a buddy's guitar, aside from being "noiseless" they didn't sound any better than the cheap Chinese pups I pulled out.... definetly better construction though.
@DaddyO's Ink I had a real YJM with the furys and they were quiet and sounded good... I like the DiMarzio injector, they're hotter.

The nut slots are probably high. That and the scallops will make it sound out of tune most of the time. I'd just ballpark the intonation comparing fretted notes. 3rd against the 15th fret. Something like that.
Its so funny how people actually think "real" strats are made very much different from these, and that the wood etc is worth alot more lol these guitars are almost identical in quality to the real ones because they're all just made out of wood and plastic ffs
Enough of the hypocrisy, everyone here knows that the elements of a sound are like chemistry and physics! not the brands, water is H2O, are two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen, they form water, with the formula of a particular sound it is the same, wood + strings + hardware + size etc.. the deception is sold a lot with the brand value, quality standards, filters in details of more expensive durable materials etc.. whether some want to accept it or not, the sound and tone of a cheap guitar does achieve it! All the subsequent whining is a consequence of ego and complaints about the product's poor durability, these Chinese guitars if you buy them and change the hardware of a Fender, the achievement of tone will be practically the same, and also much cheaper and a saving in cost than buying a Fender that the price today in countries like South America the customs tax is gross!
Ya basta de hipocrecias, todos saben aquì que los elementos de un sonido son como la química y la física! no las marcas, el agua es H2O, son dos atomos de hidrógeno y uno de oxígeno, formas el agua, con la formula de un sonido en particular es lo mismo, madera + cuerdas + herware + tamaño etc.. se vende mucho el engaño con el valor de marca, estandares de calidad, filtros en detalles de material mas caros durables etc.. quieran aceptar algunos o no, el sonido y el tono de una guitarra barata si lo logra! todo el lloriqueo posterior son consecuencias de ego y de quejas por poca durabilidad del producto, estas guitarras chinas si las compras y le cambias el hardaware de una fender , va ser practicamente igual el logro del tono, y además mucho mas barato y ahorro en costo que comprar una Fender que el precio hoy endìa en Países como sur américa el impuestoi de aduana es grosero!
