I feel like this song isn’t actually about the apocalypse, but it’s metaphor for the way we feel when we fall in love. Everything else stops mattering as much. There’s a lot of shitty things in life, but sometimes that loses meaning when we fall in love. Everything else can be burning up around us but we find peace in that one person.
Before he sang this song during his concert in Zurich last autumn, Hozier actually told the audience that he wrote this song the same day when he read that the time on the so called Doomsday Clock was moved by the scientists to one minute before twelve. He said that he had read that, that he thought of the warning and in what grim situation the entire planet was, then he said that he sat down to write a love song, and this came out. It was chilling to hear him say that, and he mentioned the current bad situation in the world three times during that concert, before this one and also two other songs he sang. His song lyrics are mostly very symbolic and metaphorical, but he himself said that this was genuinely about loving someone as the world around you desintegrates into chaos and destruction.
I always assumed it was because the world is on fire and dying where it isn't but the peace you found in that person made it okay. I assumes that they were friends who became friends who became lovers, so doomed to end. The person becomes the wasteland because that's where you live in this shitty world.
My girlfriend and I saw him last night, in Raleigh, NC, where he said he first came up with the song during his last tour. He played the sounds of rain in the background, just like the night he came up with the idea of the song. It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever experienced, holding her and swaying and just listening to this beautiful voice sing. Seeing Hozier live is really a magical experience.

All the comments on here are like a year old so I'm not sure if anyone will see this, but i think i just had a religious experience with this song?? I've not been feeling very mentally sound as of late, the world being what it is right now and a lot of stress in my personal life as well. Today in particular I was feeling especially bad. Well, there was a little thunderstorm going through my town, I could hear the rain and thunder raging on outside. I'm not sure what possessed me to do it but I decided to go out and see it. The rain and the thunder raged loudly in the background while he sang throughout the song, and then, at the very end, as his voice trailed off and the guitar faded away, the rain dissipated to a drizzle and I could hear birds singing. I heard him say "That's it.", and chuckle as I took a deep breath and for the first time in a long time I felt ok. I felt hope that things in the future are going to be ok. I'm not sure if anyone will read this comment that's already way too long, but I hope that I remember that experience for the rest of my life. We're going to be ok, and I really believe that now.

This, but playing in an abandoned church that you and your lover holed up in. It's been years since the apocalypse began and things look dire. Food is running out and there is no more clean water to be found. Nuclear fallout has turned everything grey. It is cold; warmth is a dream from a faraway past. In a few days, you will be too weak to move and find supplies and a better shelter. You both agree to just stay here, holding each other until the end. This is what you hear on your final morning: you wake up to your lover serenading you, and the world that has fallen apart. Edit: I cried at the thought of this too, I see y’all
This song is my ABSOLUTE favorite. Just how eloquently he puts it, it just seems like such an ethereal and lovely experience to truly love someone. Like to love someone until the end of the earth, THAT sort of bond. His lyrics are just so freaking poetic and perfect.

This song makes me feel so calm and validated. It reminds me of when I went camping as a kid, before everything went wrong in my life. When I’d stare at the sky in that wide open field; there were so many stars, too many to count.
We would hike for hours to a waterfall, and strip down to our bathing suits and jump in the frigid water. We would wander in creeks and collect all the sorts of creatures that his under rocks. We’d dry off on the bank, and eat PB&J sandwiches and trail mix. At night, The camp counselor would play his guitar, and we’d sing along and eat s’mores, and tell funny and scary stories to each other. Maps of the woods we explored were made, and we played tag in the dark, screaming and laughing in tandem with the curious nocturnal wildlife.

Saw him in Raleigh on Saturday and he told us that this song was inspired by a huge storm that almost canceled his last concert in Raleigh a couple of years ago. He said that he had never experience the sensation of the clean warm southern rain and it soothed him. While he was in his hotel room, he was just "noodling" on his guitar and came up with the instrumental for this song. He played the track from that night and played with it before starting the song. BEST CONCERT EVER.
So dreamy and beautiful. He’s intensely private, but I can’t help wonder who he’s in love with. The last album was about love lost; this one is about love found.
Whilst drowning I saw the true desires of my heart. The conundrum of life. My existence tries to pass me by, but when I look into your eyes, you’re the light amidst the strife. Dear wasteland baby.
I feel divinely favored after listening to this entire album. Like, I had to exist in this era only so that I could experience Hozier. And I am grateful. 🙏 Thank you Hozier.
Every song of him would fit perfectly for a very special moment in a movie, i wish he could participate on a movie soundtrack some day, it would be perfect!
There is nothing like listening to Hozier in a whicker chair, eating blackberries on a full moon, closing your eyes and reciting lyrics, and studing all day and realizing I've pushed myself and need to take a break. Hozier you will always be my voice of reason and relaxation - love from America but destined to live on the Italian countryside

I was driving through the Great Smoky Mountains when this came on. The sunrise, the clouds clinging to the valleys, and the solitude of being in a car by myself just driving on mountain roads pretty much alone at 8:00 in the morning all combined made the whole experience almost ethereal.
This song truly has been a savior for me, when I’m angry, sad, or in a funk where I don’t feel like myself, I always find my way back to this song and it puts me in a state of calm that is truly unexplainable. I feel like I’m floating in a sea of the emotion that I’m feeling, then while I listen I swim to the surface and I find myself again, in the calm of this song. And in the time that we are in, quarantine has made it so easy to feel stuck and isolated, but this song has helped me calm my nerves and feel better about the world, thank you Hozier for creating this masterpiece
I know nobodys going to see this, so i feel ok puting my thoughts thoughts out here. I have a near paralyzing fear of thunderstorms, to the point where i cant even drive through them without fear of crashing from my own worry. And this song right here has put me to sleep many a nights where its thundering and lightning.
If you lie down on your side and close your eyes while listening to this song, you’ll feel someone gently cradling you, with their heartbeat on your shoulder blade and their hand tracing your arm and GOD how did you do it Hozier???
Whenever i hear him singing, i feel like my heart tries to crawl out of my chest and i always want to cry. But in a good way. It's just so bittersweet.

I'm in my room, crying, listening to this song thirty minutes before 2020 will finally be over. Oh man, was it a wasteland. But I have some great memories. It was a year that broke me, mentally and physically. But there were several moments that I felt strong, and I felt ok. And those moments in this year of horror were a feeling of relief I dont ever think that I could recreate. Goodbye 2020, thanks for the memories. Won't miss you.
its like being whispered by some entity, luring you to his home on a rainy afternoon. Cold, damp, refreshing, dark. Being summoned in the middle of the dark woods either ita drizzling or after the rain. The smell of grass, leaves and wood after the rain. Thats it. Youre done.

All the fear and the fire of the end of the world
Happens each time a boy falls in love with a girl
Happens great, happens sweet
Happily, I'm unfazed here, too
[Chorus]
Wasteland, baby
I'm in love, I'm in love with you
[Verse 2]
All the things yet to come are the things that have passed
Like the holding of hands, like the breaking of glass
Like the bonfire that burns, at all worth in the fight fell too
[Chorus]
Wasteland, baby
I'm in love, I'm in love with you
And I love too, that love soon might end
Be known in its aching
Shown in the shaking
Lately of my wasteland, baby
Be still, my indelible friend, you are unbreaking
Though quaking, though crazy
That's just wasteland, baby
[Verse 3]
And that day that we watch the death of the sun
That the cloud and the cold and those jeans you have on
And you gaze unafraid as they sob from the city ruins
[Chorus]
Wasteland, baby
I'm in love, I'm in love with you
And I love too, that love soon might end

This, but playing in an abandoned church that you and your lover holed up in. It's been years since the apocalypse began and things look dire.
Food is running out and there is no more clean water to be found. Nuclear fallout has turned everything grey. It is cold; warmth is a dream from a faraway past.
In a few days, you will be too weak to move and find supplies and a better shelter. You both agree to just stay here, holding each other until the end.
This is what you hear on your final morning: you wake up to your lover serenading you, and the world that has fallen apart.

Beautiful.
This is absolutely beautiful
That exclamation point tricked me into thinking this was gonna be upbeat....but I ain't even mad because it's beautiful. I actually had to sit down.
This song is my ABSOLUTE favorite. Just how eloquently he puts it, it just seems like such an ethereal and lovely experience to truly love someone. Like to love someone until the end of the earth, THAT sort of bond. His lyrics are just so freaking poetic and perfect.
No one is probably going to see this, but I just wanted to say that I really love Hozier's music and this song in particular. All of his song convey different emotions that I can feel all the time, but this song is so soothing and has really helped me with my anxiety in recent times.
I know its not exactly the right interpretation but this is how I told my boyfriend I loved him for the first time. We sat on the floor in the dark and let the song play. we were definitely the corny couple that just cried and held each other. still can't listen to this song without feeling all warm and sunny inside.
I'll take this song as Hozier finally admitting to being immortal.
Truth.
The whispered "that's it" at the end? My god, just take my soul already.

After almost five years, this album is finally here and it was worth the wait. Now let's gonna take our shoes off and walk on the forest.
His album cover is a painting his mom made of him.
I know, It's amazing right? If I just saw this without previous knowledge that his mother painted this I would have thought it was a photograph

It was good.
@@gonkythegnk1046 I love going backpacking in various parts of the rockie mountains. i haven't gone alone yet and i know it's a bad idea but i would love to. when you're out there it's like nothing human matters anymore. every problem back home is meaningless while you're standing in the vastness of an open canyon or the pureness of a hidden forest, or the incredible power of a waterfall that will continue to flow and cutaway through the earth long after me and everyone i know are gone. if i were to die out there i wouldn't mind. what a place to spend your final moments.
At the end when he whispers "Thats it", my heart skipped a beat. Wow, just wow.
ah yes i need a lil soft end of the world music during this global pandemic. stay safe, whoever is reading this.

March 1st, 2019: a day to remember
Always.
1958?
Edit: Nobody got the joke, I'm severely disappointed.
Is this man for real? Seriously?
Edit: He's proof that God exists and uses endearments like 'baby' and 'honey' a lot.
Hope this isn't a negative comment

If the world was to end, the background music has to be this song.
Hozier is the kind of person that i wouldn't mind if he drowns me down the nasty swamp as long as he sings throughout the process.
Platonic Siren Man
So dreamy and beautiful.
You’re one of the greatest musical poets out there right now... thank you god

And in the time that we are in, quarantine has made it so easy to feel stuck and isolated, but this song has helped me calm my nerves and

I was drawing while listening through the album. When I got to this song, I stopped. I couldn’t bring myself to do anything but lay back and drink it in. It’s not the first time I’ve heard this song, but it brought me to tears inexplicably today. It’s beauty demands your attention, and it has mine.
