I know there are some concerns with my lack of safety equipment in this video. I was young and inexperienced when I made this video. Today, I will not get on the bike without boots, pants, a leather jacket, gloves, and especially a full face helmet. I don't remember exactly what I wore that day, or why I did not dress more appropriately, but I strongly advise against riding without proper protection. That said, it is not illegal to ride without protective gear and that is why I still passed my test.
I took this test today on my scooter. Your video helped me practice over the weekend. I had no problems and a perfect test. Thank you for alleviating all the anxiety by providing this video.
I took the test in Orem this morning and they read instructions off of a clipboard without pointing to the specific lines, so it helped a lot to see this the night before. With a scooter they had a dashed line to make the u-turn a little tighter, otherwise the same. Thanks for posting this!
Ha. Thanks, you are kind. Yes, I took the MSF course through Harley-Davidson of SLC. Follow-up: I am now riding a Suzuki Boulevard 800-something and will soon graduate to a Sportster 1200C that is sitting in the garage. All is well.
Great video. I took my test back in the days where you could ride a 50cc moped and be licensed for ALL bikes. Now you must test on a 650cc+ to ride all bikes.
It's a tiered system. For example, I completed this test on a 250. This puts me in a tier that allows me to ride bikes up to 649 cc's. If I had completed the test on a 200, I would only be able to ride bikes up to 249 cc's. If I test on a 650+ cc bike, I can ride anything legally.
The 2 tiered system is huge bullshit. How am I ever supposed to practice on a bigger bike if I cant get a license for one. The instruction classes dont have them for the normal course only the test. It's a fuxking trap for new riders.
...and thanks for posting! I was so mad at myself for messing up, especially since I've been riding for two years already. I had been sick for a week and should have just rescheduled, but decided to do it anyway. Now at least I can practice :)
so in order to get your motorcycle endorcement how do you get your bike to the testing ground in order to do the test without a trailer or big enough vehicle to do the testing?
Morgan Freeman Ha ha that is hilarious. I hope you're kidding because that would be ridiculous. In Utah they give you a permit without testing you first. With a permit you are limited to under 60 mph and cannot ride during darkness. There may be other limitations as well, I can't remember.
i'm from the UK and don't really get the American driving tests.. is he now a full licence holder? is this the only test he had to do? in the UK you sit 2 a theory and practical, theory being mostly road signs and 'what would you do' multiple choice answer questions then the practical you drive around real roads and its all about using your mirrors correctly, keeping to speed limits and seeing how good and safe you are at coming out at junctions and your timing/judgment. it seems a lot easier this way if this is it!
In Utah, they have a tiered licensing system... Because I tested on a 250, I can legally drive up to either a 650 or a 750, I can't remember. If I had tested on a bike smaller than 250 - say a 200, I would be limited to a 250. In order to get the license, I had to have a learner's permit for something like 60 days. I can't remember what I had to do to get the permit. I do know that you could bypass the learner's permit period if you took an official riding course. I didn't have the time or money to do that, so I just did the permit. The learner's permit limits you to roads under 60 MPH and you can only ride during daylight hours. Also, no passengers. After the 60 days, I had to pass a written test and then this practical test. After passing the tests, I received my endorsement that is limited by engine size and all I had to do was wait for my permanent license in the mail. I had a temporary paper license for the meantime. If I ever want to ride a bigger bike, I need to retake the practical test on a bigger one, or I think a riding class would cover that as well.
Taken from the Utah DMV website: Learners Permit Restrictions For the first 2 months your motorcycle learner permit is issued, you cannot ride a motorcycle on a highway with a posted speed limit of 60 MPH or more. You also cannot carry passengers or ride anytime between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. 3 to 6 months, from the date you motorcycle learner permit is issued, all restrictions are lifted. Rules are now in place that require motorcycle riders to be restricted to riding a motorcycle based on the cc size of the motorcycle they are tested on. In other words, if you tested on: a motorcycle 90 cc or less, you can only ride a motorcycles/scooters 90 cc or less. a motorcycle 249 cc. or less, you can only ride a motorcycles/scooters 249 cc or less. up to 649 cc or less, you can only ride a motorcycles/scooters 649 cc or less. If you are tested on a motorcycle of 650 cc or greater, there will be no restrictions. You will be able to ride any size motorcycle.
nope. You will receive a course completion card and you take that to DMV and the card will waive the road skills test and the knowledge exam. All you have to do is take a vision test
When I started the first test my thumb slipped off my starter and the test administrator dinged me on it. She called it a "stall", but my bike hadn't even fully started. Just something to know...I had no idea I had even done anything "wrong" because they don't tell you they deduct points for that. And then I botched the U-turn. My bike is a 793cc and that is a very small space to make the u-turn in. I am not certain, but I think if you have an 800cc or higher the u-turn boundaries are larger.
once passing this test is the riders license restricted for a certain period or can this man just hop on a 170bhp sport bike? just wondering, Im from Ireland, our test is allot different.
Where did you take this test at and who with? I live in Utah as well and am saving up for a bike and that dude seemed pretty laid back and the test, not that bad.
+The Misfit I don't remember the guy's name, but I took it at the Drivers License Division in South Ogden. (615 East 5300 South). He was pretty chill and I wish I could credit him somehow.

Unless you are under 18. Then you MUST wear a helmet (in utah)
Thank you for sharing 😊
I hope my proctor is that chill. 😎
That guy seem pretty chill

Haha loved that teacher, chill as fuck!
Thank you! I'm a newbie learning to ride at age 55. This helped a lot with my licensing anxiety. Great idea to share with others.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I wasn't worried about the test, but after watching this I'm really not worried about the test!
Your my hero! I gotta take this before Sept 9th. Now I can practice.
Thanks for sharing.
Is this the hawk 250?
I had the impression that the course was a lot smaller, so I previously had trepidation.
Thanks for posting this. I am about to take the test and was a little lost on what to expect.

Thanks for the vid. It is a big help in knowing what I should expect on my upcoming test.
Cool. Thanks for the feedback man. Stay safe out there.
Made it look easy - thanks for posting... Safe riding!
As the others mentioned, thank you for posting this! Plan to take my test here soon :) Seeing this is a lot of help!
i have to do this on a vespa... this should be really easy!
will be taking this test soon on my 2016 xt250 hoping for same result. nice video
This video will help me a lot, Soon i will try to pass my scooter test.
Looks like the mountains in south draper. Is that the DMV in draper?
sam allen no, it's the one in South Ogden.
Great video. I took my test back in the days where you could ride a 50cc moped and be licensed for ALL bikes. Now you must test on a 650cc+ to ride all bikes.
Nice control!
No gloves....didn’t stop inside box second time around... But Passed! Where can I take this exam? Seriously...congrats.
+EreksonJ Did you get an Endorsement or the (apparently) inexistent Motorcycle License

Nice work Jarem! I'm scheduled to take my test in Farmington in 2 weeks. Now to find a church parking lot and practice!

With a permit you can drive it there yourself
cmpondeck Oh ok thanks bro i can't wait :D

Morgan Freeman Here in Georgiayou don't need someone to ride with you

Taken from the Utah DMV website:

up to 649 cc or less, you can only ride a motorcycles/scooters 649 cc or less.
If you are tested on a motorcycle of 650 cc or greater, there will be no restrictions. You will be able to ride any size motorcycle.
Also - thanks for the video - I am on the path to getting my MC endorsement too.
Which location did you test at?
+Dennis Balla the South Ogden drivers' license division.
Hey man that is excellent! Now I know what to expect. Sincerely I found this useful. Seems like it was fairly easy.
if you take the msf course do you still have to take the dmv test
nope. You will receive a course completion card and you take that to DMV and the card will waive the road skills test and the knowledge exam. All you have to do is take a vision test
ok
Wyoming’s test is identical
Viffer here. I'll look for you in my rear view mirrors. ;)

I also had to complete a written exam.
Did you take the MSF beginners course? Best $200 I ever spent. (Other then money spent on papers with your articles in them).
This helps me know what to expect :)

+EreksonJ how long did it take to get an appointment? I need to take it within the next 8 days.
Nick Mika Sorry, I have no idea. It was a few years ago.
I wish my DMV in new jersey looked like this... NO LINES.... ahhahah i went the other day and there were 60 ppl waiting outside... LINE OUT THE DOOR!
Everybody always takes these tests on small bikes cracks me up I passed mine with no problem on a Harley Softail Heritage Classic
What location was that at?
are you wearing shorts?
Yes!😂😂😂
