I know you are against spray foam, but my insulation contractor wants to spray foam just around the rim board to seal that between the first floor and basement. Can you comment on spray foam for this purpose as well as other penetrations
Almost every insulation job involves at least a can or two of spray foam for sealing penetrations. Spray foam to seal and insulate at rim board is absolutely okay. That's not where spray foam generally becomes problematic. Still need to have proper installation conditions and techniques.
Thanks for the comment. That is the best place I know to use that product. It is a horizontal application below the main floor and is open to air movement on both sides with no room for puddling or cold condensing of water vapor. I would do it if I build more crawl spaces.
