  • "He said that if I told anyone about it, he would kill me as fast as possible." That's what Boom Swallen says he was told by another student at Mariemont High School after that teen told Boom of his alleged school shooting plans. Despite the threat to his own safety, the 15-year-old told his father, Zach Swallen, about the threat, allowing police to thwart the accused student.

Code of silence is common among children and teens. Being a snitch often means ostracism, a death sentence in their mind. They know by telling (anything), peers would get into trouble. I hope all the school tragedies will change this attitude. It isn’t betraying the tribe, it is saving lives.

And how did it get like this? Children used to see their families as their tribe, not their fellow students. There are kids whose only meal, is school lunch. They don't eat anything else throughout the day. They miss school? They do not eat that day. There are kids whose parents do not bathe or change them, they come to school week after week, in the same filthy, stinky, clothes. Teachers will wash and clean students because parents fail to do so. Go and ask a teacher the horror stories they've seen, and you will understand why kids become this way. We are all products of our environment, and when you have no love, no support, no comfort, and your life consists of wondering why tf your parents had you to begin with? You become resentful, filled with contempt, rage, hatred, now take sociopathic kids that torment that child all day at school. How tf do you think that's gonna turn out? Yea, every day. Every. Nobody commenting in any youtube videos have ever seen a shooting, have never been robbed or seen a robbery, and live in such a dangerous country that they sit at malls all day not caring about much eating greasy foods, then they come home and walk around outside and get more upset about a mailbox that fell down than they do about anything else lol The country is fine, youtube shows all the worst of everything, because that is what people want to see. It cannot be stressed enough the numerous people and families Boom saved by doing what he did and how impressive it is. Beyond just reporting what he heard (which by itself required a surmountable amount of courage), but also making the effort to initially even talk to the kid and then encouraging them to divulge so many details of their plan without downplaying them or shutting them down- that’s an element that’s far too understated in these cases. In so many instances it’s so common for people to write off warning signs because they have their own problems and don’t want to get involved. In this situation, Boom didn’t just happen to come across this plot, he uncovered it by taking the time and being open to talking to the kid and was able to save people’s lives in part as a result of that. There’s no understating how heroic Boom’s actions were in this situation.

Good job Boom! The world needs conscientious people like you! Boom also has the coolest name I have ever heard. Boom Swallen? Wow, that is genuinely such a badass name, and clearly well chosen. Zach is right, love wins, and it's great to see a powerful guy who's not afraid to speak on that topic and who facilitates vulnerable communication between himself and his kids. We need men who will stand up for civic responsibility, preach kindness, and lead by example for boys especially, who are so often shamed away from expressing emotions or openly caring for others in this society. Boom was in the right place at the right time by being a well-raised, caring guy who takes the time to speak to people and listen to them, and who pays attention to important details. That's hard to do in high school amidst all the pressures and social tension when you're a teenager, in general, even more so when faced with direct threats. A lot of people would succumb to teenage feelings of potential alienation or would overlook a concerning conversation and just move onto the next thing. There's no doubt in my mind that Boom prevented a tragedy simply by staying genuine and exercising a high level of discernment that day.
